“Probably the best 'home-made' buffet food in town”
Reviewed May 25, 2014

The decor of McHugh's can only be compared to a military barracks - 'spartan' would be an apt description. BUT it is rescued by the view over the water to the impressive volcanic island of Rangitoto (Which I was then inspired to climb the following day!).
The buffet spread consists of small platters and hot containers of a variety of excellent dishes - which are constantly replaced with freshly cooked batches - rather than displaying massive plates which eventually dry out or congeal. From fish to chicken to meat to curry, accompanied by equally fresh vegetables and salads, the dishes are impressive and matched only by the irresistible array of desserts.
Reasonably priced for a 'eat all you like' affair, quality is certainly not compromised.
Now if they could only cosy up the dreadful decor?!

“Good for large parties”
Reviewed April 13, 2014 via mobile

With a view of the sea and and an efficient system of buffet meals this is the ideal venue for a large party. Everyone gets something to eat when they want it and the service is unobtrusive and efficient. When the party is over take a walk on the sand and get some family photos with lovely Rangitoto Island in the background ... Remember while it's not intimate or high class it does its job ...

“WORST WEDDING VENUE EVER”
Reviewed April 5, 2014

I should have listened to other peoples negative online and word of mouth reviews, but this venue holds sentimental value from childhood and I hoped for the best.
I got the worst. Having many years’ experience partnering with various venues to co-ordinate corporate events and two weddings, with attendance levels up to 1500 I am in a good position to critique McHugh’s lack of service as follows:
· Throughout the process I have never been made to feel like a supplier is doing me a favour. The arrogance, lack of communication, no acknowledgement of email messages was atrocious. In one instance when followed through with a phone call 4 days after an email was sent– I was told the venue was "too busy and still getting over the weekend". This is the last thing a bride wants to hear a few days prior to her wedding.
· When I did manage to confirm a meeting time to finalise requirements – the venue manager was multi-tasking setting up the venue.
· Venue staff confusion on the day leading to bridal party being interrupted several unnecessary times during the reception.
· On the day, the venue manager acted unaware there was a request for 'nut free’ as guests including myself have allergies – even though this detail had been confirmed verbally and in writing. This could have resulted in a medical emergency to treat anaphylatix shock.
· Not enough staff – 1 bar staff for 100 guests, table skirts kept falling off due to lack of attention, no-one to cut carvery meat.
· No care taken packing down Flowers, Table Props and remaining wedding cake. Cake was damaged. Remaining favour boxes had been thrown away. And unbelievably the next day on collection, we found the venue left my props and flowers in the glaring sun without any water on top of McHugh’s stench ridden garbage bins. Our flowers, which we intended to give away to family and friends, were ruined.
The only redeeming feature is the location. For $65 wedding menu the food is average.

“Good views at McHughs Buffet”
Reviewed February 23, 2014

Absolute beach front views from inside this buffet restaurant. Wonderful to admire the beach, shimmering sea and Rangitoto Island whilst savouring a three course lunch and coffee.

The buffet selection consisted of a soup or salad starter, a choice of about four mains, six desserts, cheese and biscuits and tea/coffee. And all for $28, or $33pp at weekends. Great for treating friends and family - wonderful.
