The decor of McHugh's can only be compared to a military barracks - 'spartan' would be an apt description. BUT it is rescued by the view over the water to the impressive volcanic island of Rangitoto (Which I was then inspired to climb the following day!).
The buffet spread consists of small platters and hot containers of a variety of excellent dishes - which are constantly replaced with freshly cooked batches - rather than displaying massive plates which eventually dry out or congeal. From fish to chicken to meat to curry, accompanied by equally fresh vegetables and salads, the dishes are impressive and matched only by the irresistible array of desserts.
Reasonably priced for a 'eat all you like' affair, quality is certainly not compromised.
Now if they could only cosy up the dreadful decor?!
