“Oh such a shame”
Reviewed June 26, 2014

We have stayed in the Bull on several occasions in the past and have always enjoyed the vibrancy of the place and the quality of the rooms. But oh what a difference since the new owners have arrived. The bar area, which appears to have been refurbished, has absolutely no atmosphere whatsoever, the staff are confused and leaderless and the rooms are abysmal. The furniture is tired and the level of cleanliness well below that which we have experienced before. The shower, over the bath had mould growing along the sealant which the application of just a simple domestic cleanser would have resolved if the cleaning staff could have been bothered.

The food was mediocre in the extreme, the duck spring rolls being perhaps the worst we've ever had and generally the offerings were poor.

All in all a very disappointing experience and one that I would not wish to repeat.

It is perhaps worth noting that a previous reviewer who gave the place a 5* star review in April claimed the pub was a 20 minute walk to the Brighton Seafront. It is not. Google Maps suggests its 5 hour walk as its 16 miles away!!

Room Tip: The quieter rooms are Rooms 6 and 7 which are on the first floor. Any of the ground floor rooms can...

A great evening of drinks and nibbles in the bar area followed by a delicious meal. Fantastic starter mezze sharing boards ! Good choice of wines and efficient friendly service. Hopefully the coffee machine will be working next time to complete this encouraging and much improved standard under the current new management.

Sullen new Landlord has removed all traces of village history, painted ancient oak beams, is passing off food as local when it's shipped in from London, and whose chef claims to be a "Master Chef" of GBbut forgot to put duck in my duck spring roll and who managed to burn a burger to a charred crisp. Go to the Crown. Food is better, beer cheaper and the landlady is nice.

Stayed here for one night while visiting my sister in this nice little pub B&B. Quiet rooms in an outbuilding separate from the pub. Stayed in the family room which has a shared bathroom and two good size rooms with two doubles and a single bed. Clean rooms good size, complete with everything needed hair dryer, soaps, tea/coffee and lots of parking available. I didn't sample the breakfast but ate in the evening which was a lovely meal so am sure the breakfast will be at a good standard too! The bull is located in a quiet sussex village which has 2 other pubs that I saw, a village shop, petrol station Indian restaurant so if I was staying for a longer break there are other places to visit all within walking distance and also only a 20 min walk from Brighton seafront! Well worth a visit if you wanted a country break but a stones throw from the beach.

Stopped just one night at The Bull. The staff were exceptionally friendly and very helpful. The room was lovely and very clean and well equipped. We had dinner in the retaurant and all the meals were of a high quality and well priced. I'd recommend a meal or a stay at this great venue.

I stayed at this pub for a weekend and have stayed at many others that were much, much nicer. I am American therefore I'm usually not too picky. I know these places are old and rickety, which adds to the charm. However this place was dirty. Cob webs everywhere and spiders too. Dust and dirt in the bathroom. Generally not a good feeling being there. In the restaurant the food was good but the white fabric chairs were filthy which detracted from the experience. The "pub" suddenly closed even though it was filled with people. Most pubs will stay open to accommodate their guests. This was probably the worst "pub" I've visited and the least hospitable. Big dissapointment and I was NOT captivated by its charm as I normally am. In most cases I can look past the faults to find the beauty of the English countryside. Not this time. Couldn't look past the filth neglect and lack of hospitable service.

Room Tip: Don't stay there. If you must, inspect your room for bugs and spiders first.

Me and my partner stayed in room 5 last weekend. We paid £95 for one nights stay, the room was nice but there were cobwebs all over the windows, the kettle had many tea stains on it and there was a large orange stain on the bed sheet! Definitely not worth £95. On a positive note the location was lovely, and the food was nice but I wouldn't stay their again.
