“Delightful short break in the mountains”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

29th October 2013; Maureen and Ken, Mornington Peninsula

A short break at the Black Spur Inn is a "shot in the arm" when a few days away from home is called for. Dianne and her staff provided excellent service during our two night stay in the newly refurbished Premier King room. Excellent sized room with lots of natural light, all the amenities, comfortable king bed, a large screen TV with video, a speaker charging dock for the iPhone and comfy bucket chairs to relax in (unlike many places where one sits in a chair and the other sits on the bed). We also had the option of a front balcony and a rear smaller access balcony. After a fair lunch en-route night one was a relaxed dinner and, following our waitress recommendation it was the homemade Chicken Parma - ripper! Desert? "If possible, may we take a Cheese Board to our room to enjoy with the in room supplied port?" Of course was the reply and off we went with quite a range of cheese, fruit and biscuits.

After a day of travels around the district it was time for our dinner (part of our second night Wine, Dine and Stay a While package. A delightful bottle of Wild Boy - Wood Point Wines was supplied and we settled into a fine meal. We started with the Regional Taste Plate to share and followed with (1) Snapper Fillets with parsley and almond butter, mash and greens and (2) Crunchy Baked Chicken Supreme with a basil parmesan and semi-dried tomato filling, mash and greens. All that was followed by (1) Sorbet Trio and (2) Death by Chocolate - a warm pudding with one of the richest chocolate sauces encountered! A fantastic meal and a great nights sleep in a very comfortable bed.

Both mornings began with a delightfully filling cooked breakfast in a lovely bush setting.

We enjoyed the "Postcards Special Bed and Breakfast on Day 1 and the Wine, Dine and Stay a While package for Day 2.

The Black Spur Inn is a quintessential country pub with well appointed rooms, large dining room (tables not crowded onto each other) and a pleasant sitting area for relaxation. Very friendly staff and a fine chef - what more is required to make for a very pleasant break. Even the checkout process (paying the bill and best wishes for a safe trip home) was a delight.

We thoroughly recommend the BlackSpur Inn.

Room Tip: Ask for the Premier King Room on the forest side corner (room 1) Plenty of morning sunshine, light a...

I spent 2 nights in the king room last weekend. It was magical. The water pressure in the shower was amazing......I didn't want to get out. The bed was so comfy, I also didn't want to get out!!! It was such a relaxing weekend with such beautiful surrounds.

The staff were friendly and were genuinenly interested in our activities for the weekend and made an effort to tell us about the area and things to do.

The food was so delicious. One of the best Schnitzels i've ever had and had to have the next night too. The vegies were fresh and tasty. I would love to be back there now. We had 2 breakfasts there as well which were just as tasty.

The only thing I can complain about for the weekend is that it didn't go for long enough...

Room Tip: The king room was fantastic. Quite modern with awesome heating.

My husband and l recently spent the weekend at the Black Spur Inn. The whole experience was refreshing. With the restraints of city life put aside for 48 hrs we found ourselves warmly embraced by the open fires, ambience, and down to earth friendly staff. The accomodation and mealsfurther reflected both quality and attention to detail!. Beatrice

reflected the warmth and comfort that we had hoped for. The meals '(roast and steak) exceeded our expectations

This place was ideal for our family of four to stay overnight before heading to Lake Mountain so the children could have some snow play. This place was great, you could Stay, Eat, Drink & Relax in the one place. The Bistro meals were lovely and plentiful! The accomodation was lovley, clean and cosy. Just gorgeous anytime of year! Highly recommended!

Room Tip: We had the delux room, which had an ensuite and the room was quite large.

The Black Spur Inn surpassed our expectations in terms of the homely warm atmosphere, food prepared from a talented team of chefs, friendly staff and excellent service. We all enjoyed superb meals with an artful mix of flavours and generous portions. Those expecting a 5 star resort may perhaps misunderstand what this little getaway is all about. The room was dated yes, but spacious, clean and had everything we needed, which is more than you'd usually get for the price. The Black Spur Inn represents excellent value. It's proximity to all on offer around Marysville and Lake Mountain and the relaxed feeling of being a million miles away from the hustle and bustle made our stay a memorable one. We intend to return when we get the chance. Thank you to the owners and staff!

What a mob of shysters! Dropped in on a Friday night, on the way to an overnighter in the bush. Thought a good pub meal and a hot shower in the morning before an early start would be the go. The pub meal was good and things were looking good. The evening bar staff were friendly and their service was great.

Kitchen didn't open till 8.00am the next morning, so decided to up and shower early and have breakfast up the mountain. Hit the shower at 7.00am and no hot water and what water did come out was full of dirt. Went down to talk to management they said they were trying to fix it and after several follow ups and different stories, was told it could not be fixed till lunch time, so I could wait? That didn't fit with our plans so we packed our families up (without a shower) and went to check out at 8.30am.

Now a reasonable person would think that some consideration on the bill would be in order. No way... and their story had changed... we could wait for half an hour, have breakfast with them (spend another $400.00 between us) and by then the showers would be fixed?

We said our plans were for an early start so this was not convenient. Our choice they said, and the full tariff was still charged for no hot water.

What a disgrace. These people had no shame. Come back again, they said, and they would knock something of the tariff then. Who are they kidding?

We'll drive on to Marysville next time...

Room Tip: Drop in for an honest and friendly pub meal, but don't stay there. Find a room in Marysville, o...

Hi Thomas,
We thank you for your positive feedback for our staff, meals and service, it is always great to applaud our staff and let them know that their efforts are appreciated by our customers.
We are at a loss to understand your perception of the unexpected events that occurred on the morning of your departure and your hasty review. We empathise and totally understand your frustration and disappointment that your day did not start to plan and apologise for the inconvenience caused to you and your group.
We were awoken very early on Saturday morning by our housekeeping staff who arrived to find 300 litres hot water flooding at the rear of our premises. Of course we immediately jumped into action to sort this issue trying to contact a plumber who would answer a distress call on a weekend. This unfortunately was to no avail as no plumber would come to our aid immediately. We managed after one hour to find the burst hot water main seal and to isolate the offending unit from the rest so that we would have water now filling and heating into the two remaining units which had also completely emptied. This is the reason why you had the dirty sediment coming through the pipes which settles on the bottom of the hot water tanks.
We know that this is not your problem or concern however, we communicated with you throughout the process in an attempt to minimise the disruption and inconvenience. Obviously from your angry comments we failed. We had instructed our Chef that your group would be joining us for breakfast and as a good will gesture was to be complimentary. Unfortunately for some reason, this was not communicated throughout your party and you altered your arrangements and hastily departed.
At the time of the departure we stated that we would look after you in the future. On Monday, one day prior to receipt of your review, we sent all members of your group our sincere apologies and a discount voucher for accommodation and meals to use when next you travel to our beautiful region. As we are only 85kms. from the CBD we hope that you accept our genuine offer and join us in the future for an enjoyable stay with plenty of hot water and a warm welcome.
