Certificate of Excellence

We spent 2 days there with "winelover" friends.
The Hotel has spacious rooms, the staff is very polite. Wines and food were excellent, The services both in the bar and the restaurant also met our expectatios. We had the chance to visit the cellar wich is amazing. The Breakfast room however is too small, The staff there were less polite, and we were not satisfied with the variety of the food. Our overall experience is though very, very good.

While we did not stay at the hotel, we did eat at the Óbor Restaurant. Between the wine and the meal we absolutely hated to leave. Bock wine is as good as many international wines I have tried. Their Cabernet Sauvignon Selection and Capella are truly exceptional. We had two very typical Hungarian dishes which were prepared as well as I have ever had and I do know my stuff as I have been visiting Hungary every year for the past 14 years. the Wild Gulyas Soup was the best I have ever tasted while my wife's Bullion with bonemarrow was spectacular. The entrees were also excellent; mine a Becsi Selet-like dish (Weiner Schnitzel) and my wife's Pork Paprikas style meal was wonderful. This restaurant is a must if you ever visit Villany.

Like the Gere down the road this place has grown from humble panzio into a very nice hotel. Both offer great food, comfortable rooms, a spa experience and of course, wonderful wines. The Bock lacks the charming views of some of the rooms at the Gere hotel but it holds its own with its food and mind blowing wines. Rooms are large and comfortable. The desk kindly turned up the A.C on a hot afternoon as there are no in-room controls.. It got COLD! One guest I spoke to told me that he ONLY stayed at the Bock because he though they had the best beds in town. My wife concurred. The bidet in the bathroom was a nice touch.,..especially after a week on the Goulash Trail..laugh.. No English language news channels.. Bummer;..
The food has improved tremendously. For years the restaurant served decent though unimaginative plates.. That has all changed.. The kitchen now has a real chef working behind the stoves and the dishes are inventive and delicious... Shame that the foie is served without a nice sweet red onion or fruit confit and toasts to spread it on instead of the soft home baked grape seed bread.. My Mangalica pork with a delicious roasted pepper cream sauce was beautiful , the fried green onion stems not so much..The wait staff are real pros and happy to talk food and wine.,,. It goes without saying that the wine, the big reds at least, have no equals in Hungary and are prize winners throughout Europe.. beautiful stuff.. Joszef Bock is usually around and he is a very funny and nice man., not to mention a real pioneer in the post communist wine making scene. Get him to sign a few bottles for your cellar!
The spa is a modest affair; small indoor pool, a jacuzzi ( which much better than the one at the Gere) sauna and a small steam room that hadn't been turned on sadly. Massages etc are available by appointment. The bottled mineral water was a nice touch..
Breakfast comes with the room..It's a buffet deal with the usual salamis and cold cuts, not so great bread and surly serving women.. The Gere beats them hands down here. Some decent baked good would be nice..

Already couple times visited the Bock Pince Panzio Etterem with family and friends. The only topic for discussion during departure was the plan, when to come back again.
Absolutely top level service in each corner. Restaurant is perfect. When the weather getting cold a bit, no issue, heaters & wraps are immediately available.
Food excellent & the wine is like from the heaven.
Rooms big enough and clean.
The cellar visit is a must. Can you imagine 5 000 sqm cellar full wooden barrel and wine!? Unbelievable experience.
Each small details well done in high quality

If you are into wine - big red wines - and you think Bordeaux, Bourgogne and Barolo area are too snobbish and expensive, then you should consider finding a true pearl deep down in Hungary. Then wine region Villány between the culture city Pecs and the Croatian border is a beautiful area with volcano like mountains and fantastic wines. At the Bock Winery you will find a top 5 wine maker in Hungary and cuvees at high international class. Their hotel with a good restaurant and fitness center is just what makes this perfect. Pricewice very cheap measure to the quality. They have concerts (classic and contemporary) in their new tasting room in the wine cellar - a fantastic beautiful place.
In the wine village Villány you will find nearly all of the wineries in that area - within walking distance - and you can make trips into the wine fields and beautiful nature.

Room Tip: At 40 degrees Celsius outside it was good to have aircon even though it was a bit noisy. Their rooms...

We selected this panzio after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and a recommendation from friends.

The panzio is well located, only 600m walk from the main street, so it is quiet but easy to reach the other wine cellars and restaurants. The rooms are large, very clean and the beds are comfortable. Breakfast was very reasonable with a lovely range of meats, home made jams, eggs 'n bacon etc.

Downsides? The panzio is also a working winery, so the work and noise starts early in the morning. If you leave the windows open for fresh air at night, you can expect to be woken early! It is OK if windows are closed. Another minor point, bathrooms are large but the showers / baths are small.

We tried the Wildstew in red wine, served with noodle, and the Salmon, roasted on grape-seed oil served with home-made pasta, flavoured with spinach, with the recommended wines.

So it was Cabernet Sauvignon Jammertal Selection for the Wildstew, and their new laureate Bluefranc Rosé with the Salmon, and it was just magnificent.

The waiter was really nice and he was a real professional about wine, so we had a really good time and a superb dinner.

The price is right, wine was really good, and the food.. Hmm, we would totally go back :)
