This was a favourite haunt of mine in my student days I the 1970s and 1980s when it was the phoenix. We revisited in January this year and have returned several times since as we found it to be good value for money. The food is of a generally high standard. For starters, I would highly recommend the steamed dumplings or the smoked duck with ginger and chili, but the chicken and sweet corn soup is nice and there is a generous amount of chicken. For main course, the sizzling dishes are outstanding, especially the lamb with ginger and garlic. The Singapore noodles and special fried rice make tasty accompaniments. The toffee apples and toffee bananas are great. The jasmine tea is good, made with loose tea and not a teabag. Service is generally helpful and efficient. The only negative thing is the decor, a coat of paint and a new carpet really wouldn't go amiss.
