The Bekal fort is an awesome sea fort attraction that is hardly talked about outside this area. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains this site; and as it does everywhere else, does a shoddy job. The large moats are overrun with weeds as are many parts of the fort. Thankfully most of the large granite blocks are intact so as to give one a glimpse of its once grand history.

The ASI rendition of history is equally sketchy. They speculate whether this fort was built by the Vujayanagara Kingdom or the Kadamba Dynasty; even though they admit that they found Kadamba inscriptions in the fort. One wonders where the confusion is!!

As you walk in, there is an old Hanuman temple. Once you enter the fort premises, you are immediately captivated by the grandeur of this structure. The main battle command center is located slightly away from the sea and closer towards the roads leading to the fort. But provides an awesome 360-degree view of the area. A very large ditch on the eastern side was very obviously a large lake that stored water. We saw at least two very large wells that still had water. Unfortunately, these were maintained very poorly by the ASI and is now being used by numerous tourists as a garbage pit. There are two vendors inside the fort who are more interested in selling their produce and less on managing the garbage they generate. Tourists take cue from badly maintained facility to add their own bit to the mess.

There is a large Naval battle command center that overlooks the entire western wall. There are enough ramparts that most likely held numerous cannons to dominate the sea lanes.

If you are visiting this area, this fort is a must-see attraction.

The Bekal fort is a very well maintained monument. The gardens are nicely manicured. Don't miss the spectacular views of the sweeping beaches below the fort.

This fort is HUGE, the sheer size hits you once you enter. Its getting renovated and loads of flowers around. Also the view around is beautiful with sea on one side and coconut tree on another.

Its better than what one gets to see in the tu hi re song.

Would like to visit it again with more time in hand as the beach surrounding it deserves more time. We had wanted to stay overnight in the vicinity, but the place has a paucity of good budget hotels around it.

The problem is that the only good hotels around are five stars and the one just next to the fort is not at all promising if its food is anything to go by. Besides, it has a dirty loo with no water. That might be true only about the open dining area...but still..
