“Monkey Island”

Let's be straight you shouldn't even be on Koh Rong if you have to travel with a suitcase. However once your past that it's a beautiful island and Paradise Bungalows is the only place to stay. Certainly nicer than your other options. This place also has an amazing lounge/restaurant that is a great place to hang out. The owner has spent a lot of time teaching his staff to cook and their menu has quite a variety to it. Food is great and prices seem almost too cheap. If you're going to the island this is the place to stay.

I gave this a 4 star rating simply because I think it is above average in terms of location, lodging, and food compared to other nearby properties that I saw. But compared to other islands with more options, it might warrant a 3. My husband and I stayed for a few nights over the New Year and paid $65 for a beachfront last minute reservation as we wanted to get out of our home base in Phnom Penh. If isolation is what you are looking for, then you will find it here. Perfect place to chill out and relax without the chaos that Sihanoukville offers. Considering the very simple accommodation I would say that $65 is a bit much, however, it was right on the water so we could enjoy the view and walk a couple of feet when needing to cool off. The restaurant offers good food options with lots of Western dishes and the staff tried their hardest to accommodate the busy crowd in the evening. They weren't out of their way friendly, but I don't think they were rude as some have experienced. We rented snorkeling equipment there for about $5 I think and the rocks offered good fish sightings, although it can get choppy and windy. Be aware that when I say simple accommodation, I mean simple. The room had a bed and that's pretty much it. We spent most of our time on the deck lounging around or in the water. Overall I would recommend.

This island is stunning, the bungalows are comfortable and the restaurant/bar at Paradise is generally great. There were three gorgeous dogs to play with.

There was very little running water in the rooms (it was dry season, so only a couple of hours a day) and no electricity during the day. The mosquito nets had holes in them, so i got bitten a lot at night. But these things are standard for beach huts on newly developed islands.

The real issues were the noise, and the terrible service. When we arrived the manager must have been away, because the staff were absolutely appalling! They were rude and inattentive, just sitting around, playing noisy Khmer pop on their phones/devices and acting annoyed when you asked for anything. Worst of all, they played the loudest and most hideous music imaginable at an incredibly loud volume late into the night. Staff favorites appeared to include "Barbie Girl" and "Gangnam Style". Breakfast music was a pretty unappealing soundtrack of techno and Khmer pop (staff seemed to be competing to see who's device could do the best job of drowning out the sound system).

As soon as the owner came back, the soundtrack changed to dreamy classical music over breakfast and the most gorgeous soul/blues at night (not too loud; not too late). And the service improved.

I'd recommend Paradise; just hope the manager is there when you arrive!

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the beach. The 'mountain bungalows' are pretty far from the beach and...

We stayed in one of their luxury sea front bungalows...amazing! We were just a few steps from the ocean in a beautiful bungalow with a great balcony and hammock. There is also a great, comfortable restaurant with tasty food for all meals. It is far enough away from the other bars/restaurants to be peaceful but an easy walk to reach the ferry piers and dive shops. An idyllic beach holiday in a beautiful setting!

The island and the accommodations are rustic and stunningly beautiful. The sand is white and the sea is turquoise. We stayed in a bungalow just a few paces from the sea. Combine the setting with a friendly staff, good food and scuba diving options a few meters away, and you've got a recipe for a fabulous vacation!

While we arranged a room in advance through the hotel's office in S'ville, when we shlepped to the hotel they had no record of us. Luckily (we thought) they found a room for us. Unluckily, it was away from the beach, behind the restaurant. We must have been near the generator, because once it was turned on, the thumping in our room was enough to drive a person insane. Then we didn't have water, even when the water was supposed to be on (water was rationed) -- something wrong with the pipes. To top it off, the restaurant played annoyingly loud music in the evening - perhaps to drown out the generator? An evening walk on the beach provided no relief as the music from town could be heard pretty clearly in front of the hotel. The next day, construction on what looked like a new unit began at 7 a.m.
On the positive side, the staff was very friendly, though we had to plead to get a cup of hot water at 7 in the morning (the restaurant doesn't open until 8, but we saw two hot kettles on the stove).
So we called Pura Vita and got a pick up the next day. That was paradise indeed, bungalows and a restaurant on a private beach, about a 40 minute pleasant walk from town.
By the way, Pura Vita, which has only 5 units, did not have to ration water, even in the dry season, the way Paradise did. It seems that with all the bungalows cropping up on the site at Paradise, the hotel is not using sustainable practices.

Room Tip: Only stay here if you get a room directly on the beach, away from the generator and the restaurant.

I am sorry to hear that you had such a disappointing experience and that your hotel's office was not able to secure a booking for you correctly.

If the hotel was affiliated with us they should have been able to provide you with a booking receipt as reference, otherwise they would have been asked to direct you to our office to pick one up, thus avoiding any complications on check in.

If you could let me know where you booked I would be happy to talk with them so we can avoid any such confusion in future.

I'm not sure when you stayed with us (we have an annual party for the Rudy's birthday at the end of March, which we advise our customers of in advance), but the majority of the time our restaurant/bar closes around 10pm and plays music suitable for diners to enjoy their food and conversation. I have heard music later on the beach from other establishments though, perhaps you could have confused the source of the music?

We are aware that some customers had been disturbed by the sound of our generator, and subsequently rehoused it to cut out the noise. Now all of our bungalows have lights and fans all night, plus no noisy generator!

As for water, for about 1 month at the end of the dry season the whole island runs out of water. This is an ongoing issue which we work around by bringing giant containers in from the mainland. As we operate more than 5 (26) bungalows it is not possible to supply all the rooms with water 24/7 so we do limit running water to mornings and evenings. There is also a large earthenware container in the bathrooms which customers are advised to fill and use throughout the day if needed.

Re sustainability (I assume you are thinking environmentally?) we encourage all customers to refill their water bottles (very cheaply) using our filtered water, power our restaurant/kitchen/wi-fi etc with solar energy, recycle wherever possible, and send any waste back to the mainland via boat to be disposed of correctly. There is probably lots more to add here but this is just off the top of my head.

I hope that this has covered some of the issues you raised and I am glad that you managed to enjoy the rest of your stay on the island and made the most of your trip.

We stayed there for 3 nights and we absolutely loved it. It is located a few hundred meters from the village, enough to be quiet but still very close to walk to the village if needed. We got a beach front bungalow which meant that every day we were woken up by the sound of the waves, amazing feeling. However it can be a bit noisy at night, from people simply walking and talking on the beach but that was not a serious issue. Electricity was available 24/7 and water only in the morning and in the afternoon but to the dry season. However every room has a bucket to collect water so never had an issue. The toilet was at the back of the room, without ceiling which allows you to see the stars and there are even plants everywhere! The restaurant was also very nice, ideal for enjoying food and relaxing. The staff was very friendly but could have been a bit more helpful; we were told there is no wifi but later realized there was one, we were told to pay at an agency in SKV while we could have paid there, etc - however really minor things.
We really enjoyed staying there and we would love to come back.

Room Tip: Do spend a little bit extra for a beach front bungalow!
