“KGB deal - gone badly wrong”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

Booked this last February, and after quite a few phone calls and being told that the deal had been more popular than expected, they were struggling to meet demand. Finally had to settle for an October weekend -Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th. Unfortunately we were unable to have the Friday due to York races being on and they were full. The Sunday night option wasn't great but took Monday off work and arranged childcare. Yesterday, after a 200mile journey and over 4 hours in the car we went to check in. Only to be told they'd expected us Friday (?) and as we'd not shown they'd cancelled our booking and resold our room. Add to insult, we're told that KGB wasn't making them any money and would rather take regular bookings. The manager Sid Monogiou, actually smirked when he said he'd resold our room as we were a no show!! To make the situation even more tense, when the female employee said she didn't recognise the writing for the booking, he broke into his own language, and whatever he said to her, clearly upset her and she left the area. Bless her, she even came out to our car later to offer a telephone number of a local hotel. Sadly, our experience doesn't mirror that of other KGB customers. My advice to any other potential guests........don't bother unless you're paying full price, and even then, well you're choice.

Great food, friendly staff and a unique hotel experience. What's not to like!

I read another reviewer comment on the room, you are not going to get a modern hotel feel as the whole point is that the décor is designed to match the experience of a 1950's railway carriage! The rooms are well equipped and comfy.

My only minor downside was a pure coincidence of network rail doing night work on the east coast line right outside the hotel! But this was probably the first time that's happened at that point for years!!

Just returned from an excellent experience from the KGB deal at the sidings. All the staff were friendly and made time to talk to the quests even when they were very busy. Our very much needed break was made very special. A lot of work has gone into and is still ongoing to make the rooms reflect a unique time in train travel history. Our group had both the set menu and from the a la carte, both were very tasty and well presented. Well done and thank you for everything

We stayed on a 2 day voucher deal and having read reviews, upgraded to the four poster room 8. It’s bigger and worth the upgrade, it has everything you need. The bed is comfy with good quality bedding . The room has character and charm as does the whole of this establishment. Yes there are bits here and there which may need some attention, after all it is an ongoing process which takes time, but only nitpickers like reviewer James B would snivel at that (In fact he didn’t stay overnight and still said it would be too noisy!!! – a true reviewer, I think not).
Depending on the size and speed of trains that pass you may or may not experience the vibration, it didn’t bother us at all during our 2 nights. We actually enjoyed watching the trains whizz past as we had a glass of wine or was it 7 or 8? We ate both nights in the dining carriage and thoroughly enjoyed both evenings, the food was good from an extensive menu and so was the service from the friendly and polite staff.
Sid, the owner, was very friendly and sought us out on first night to explain the bathroom refurbishment. He then treated us to some Raki, (Greek firewater nicer than Ouzo though) and he enjoyed spending time with his guests. Sid had never tried Glayva so we hunted high and low in York before finding a Tesco that sold it and Sid enjoyed his Scottish gift from us.

Breakfast is continental but we preferred to have the cooked breakfast, good value at £5.

We used the handy nearby park and ride to get into York, £2.60 return each. York itself was nice but not as big as I expected, worth a visit but wouldn’t rush to visit there again. We chatted with other guests before heading home who told us about Eden camp, we shall visit there when we return to stay at the Sidings- it’s only 26 miles and looks good!

We recommend the Sidings but go with an open mind regarding the accommodation as it’s a quirky experience you get, not a fancy big hotel. We hope to return.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a four poster it's a slightly bigger room and you can see the trains pass by from you...

This was a gift from my children for my 60th Birthday..and they could not have chosen better! I absolutely loved it. The location is wonderful, right next to the East coast trainline. They booked us room 8- the four poster room - from which you can see the track and hear the trains, all part of the experience..there was a mix up over our booking..thanks SId! but it turned out ok as we had room 2 on the first night of our stay which was actually very comfortable,it had just had a re-furb, in fact it's the first time I've slept through a whole night in years!. The staff are very very friendly, Vicky you are a gem and should get a pay rise!! Thank you so much for all your help and the complimentary 3 course meal to make up for the room fiasco! The food is excellent, we had the homemade tomato soup, very likely the nicest I've had. The swordfish was cooked perfectly and the raspberry tart finished the meal off well. Breakfast was continental, but plentiful. Boiled eggs, cooked meats, cheeses, toast, pastries, croissants, cereals and orange juice, more than enough to set you up for a visit to York..We got the Number 29 bus which runs along the main road, a five minute walk away and was in York in about fifteen minutes. But be aware the buses don't run on a Sunday so we had a taxi (£8!) to the park and ride at Rawcliffe which runs about every ten minutes. Visit the Railway Museum if you have the time, it's free and if you love trains it's well worth a visit.
Back to the four poster room- it's lovely. Much bigger than the other rooms, but remember it is a converted railway carriage so don't expect a massive room. The bed is so high and comfortable, one night in there was not enough! I don't think I could fault it. In fact I can't find fault with anything, it was a great break away, I can't wait to return. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: If you have booked a particular room give them a phone call the day before to remind them
