“Lovely Food Cooked With Love.”
Reviewed August 30, 2012

This pub is presently undergoing renovation but don't let that stop you going there, you'd be missing a real treat. The menu is small but beautifully formed and cooked with love, not only are the main courses are delicious but the home baked desserts are to die for. The staff are warm and welcoming and we look forward to returning in the future.

Thank you for your kind comments- we enjoy what we do and really appreciate getting some feedback. We are also very lucky to have some fabulous local ingredients to work with. Hope to see you again soon.

Passing through the area and we were ready for something to eat. We stopped on a Friday evening and the Bay Horse looked very inviting from outside, so we thought we'd give it a try. The pub is cosy and comfortable, although a bit "tired" looking. The menu is on a blackboard at the side of the bar with quite a few choices. The meat choices are locally sourced and everything is cooked to order. Friday night is a "specials" night and 2 steaks and a bottle of house wine is £30, so we thought we would give this a try. The steak was one of the best we've ever had and the chips are hand cut and superb - no frozen chips here!

The meal was great value for money and we would certainly call again.

Our group of 7 cyclists stayed one night on our Way of the Roses bike ride. We received a warm welcome and the hospitality throughout was wonderful. The rooms were comfortable and clean with a great shower, there was a lockable store for our bikes and the landlady and staff were very helpful - tumble drying our damp clothes was a big plus after 2 days cycling in the rain.

We chilled out on the comfy sofas with a fine selection of real ales, and enjoyed a very good meal in the restaurant (recommend the locally sourced steaks). Breakfast the next morning was top notch. Overall, we were very happy to have stayed at the Bay Horse.

Thank you for your positive and lovely comments, and hope you arrived at your next pit stop safely and a bit drier! We welcome cyclists, have lockable storage for bikes and offer emergency washing/drying facilities if required.

We stayed here with our friends, another couple, and our dog for 2 nights over the Jubilee weekend and unfortunately the weather disrupted the proposed village and pub celebrations.
That said, we had an enjoyable stay with very little to complain about.....welcome was nice and staff friendly. Although serving times were a little limited during our stay, the food was good and locally produced, ( although coffee wasn't hot at breakfast ).
Rooms were clean and sufficient to our expectations, but the bathrooms were a little basic. ( Stella did inform me that they were due for upgrade ).
Lovely village, with nice walks in surrounding area and good location to visit York, Knaresborough ( lovely town ! ) and Harrogate.

Thank you for your lovely comments- shame about the weather but hope you enjoyed the celebrations nonetheless.
We have just 3 more bathrooms to do, and are about to start some more refurbishment of the pub and rooms. we hope to see you again in the future,

We stayed here over two nights for a wedding, and whilst the location is lovely and the people very friendly, the place was quite grubby and needed a good clean. The rooms were small (and felt even more so as we had a cot in the room for our son) and the bathroom tiny with only a shower. The rooms also didn't feel very clean and had a musty aroma. The water systems for the rooms seem to be interlinked so every time someone flushed in one room, you could hear it coming through your bathroom. The walls were thin too, so you could hear people in the next room talking / on the phone / the TV. The service for breakfast was very slow and seemed to be understaffed. It took 25 mins for a friend to be served and I was told beans on toast would take 20 minutes! Strangely, whilst the pub was fairly large and welcoming, breakfast was served in a small side area that was cordoned off and very pokey.

For the price of the place, I would expect a much higher standard.

Thank you for your comments, which I will certainly take on board. I am glad you found our service friendly and welcoming, and I have investigated the points you raised.
During the weekend of your stay we had several guests with children attending the same wedding as yourselves , so our rooms which are more suited to familes were, unfortunately, already booked. We do not charge for children at all- including breakfast- and gladly offer a baby bath as an alternative to a shower.
We use our dining area for breakfast as we are a dog- friendly pub but keep this area dog-free so people with dogs can eat in the pub without disturbing our other guests. If our guests prefer to breakfast in the pub, we will happily set up a table for them- particularly useful for larger groups.
I am sorry you felt your room was not thoroughly clean, but can assure you we clean all our rooms daily.
Regarding your breakfast- service was slower than it should have been, as all our guests chose to come for breakfast at the same time. The beans on toast was, I believe, an extra order for someone who had already had breakfast. As such, we were happy to provide this, but keen to prepare breakfast orders which were outstanding first. We do not hot-hold breakfast but cook to order, which does take a little longer. Again, I do apologise for any delay you experienced.
The Bay Horse is an old coaching Inn and our accommodation is in converted stables> unfortunately, there is little we can do about the thickness of the walls or size of the rooms/bathrooms. Some rooms do have larger bathrooms/bedrooms but on this occasion, these rooms were already booked out or allocated to families requiring extra beds.
Again, thank you for taking the time to pass on your comments.

Choice of food in pub was fairly limited and found food greasy

Also how difficult is it to do a fried egg - mine was burnt

Thank you for your comments which I have looked into and take on board.
Our prices are, sadly, affected by rising costs and our location but also reflect the services we offer. Our room rates include free wi-fi in public areas, extensive breakfast consisting of fresh fruit cereals, juice, porrige and cooked, using top quality local sausage, bacon and black pudding, and free pick-up and drop off to local train station. The rate we charge includes vat at 20%, and booking agency commission (if used) of 15%.
I am sorry you were not happy with your fried egg, but hope you enjoyed the other items in your breakfast.
Our menu is fairly short- typically 4 starters, 12 main courses, and 4-5 puds. We use local meats and produce in season, cook everything ourselves, to order, and aim to offer a selection of both traditional and inventive dishes. We are generally fortunate in receiving some lovely comments about our food , so I am very sorry we did not meet your expectations.

The room was basic but clean. TV could do with being bigger, it was really small and only had channels 1- 4 and I had to sit in bed with my glasses on! The dinner we had in the evening was so good, all homecooked, fresh and the meat was from the local farm shop and breakfast was just as good. All the staff were friendly and attentive and very helpful.
