“Will definitely visit again...”
Reviewed February 21, 2010

I visited York for 1 night with my husband and our two friends and Hilton Lodge kindly allowed us 2 double rooms for one night (unlike most York B&B's who either refused the two rooms and/or the one night stay!!).
The whole house was furnished beautifully in the Victorian style - I especially liked the bathroom with the rolled bath and period furnishings.
The room we had was nicely decorated but a badly placed radiator meant it was behind the heavy drapes so I found the room to be quite cold - however if the radiator was showing it would have spoilt the atmos of the room (and it was February!).
Breakfast was lovely with a large selection of cereals, fruit then the full English - which wasn't piled on as some are...nicely portioned!!
Debbie the landlady was very friendly and accommodating as we arrived a good 2 hours before check in and she allowed us access to the rooms for bag storage. She does a very good job of making you feel welcome and makes sure you know where things are.
Previous reviews of this B&B have been (in my opinion) unfair. A B&B should be comfortable, cozy and friendly which is what this was. If you want hotel style accommodation – book a hotel!!

Just had a three night stay. Landlady Debbie very friendly. Clean towels provided every day. Food was delicious. Tea and coffe replenished daily. Nice and cosy guest house. Will definately return as I believe that atmosphere is everything.

Pleasant enough staff but very disappointing standard of accommodation. If you do decide to book make sure the actual room you book is en-suite - the website led me to believe that all the rooms are en-suite but ours wasn't. I wasn't happy to share a bathroom with no shower and just a bath with peeling enamel. Just a small point- I had to demand the 'complementary' bottle of wine but needn't have bothered as it was 'value label' and nasty.

If you have average cleanliness standards - DO NOT BOOK. Once white towels and bed linen, grey and stained, we had to use our own hand towels for the 2 nights we were there. The one & only en suite that we had booked had a sink with more cracks than china - so unhygienic, & a mattress so old that it squeaked with every move. No on site parking and no complimentary bottle of wine to make up for any of it, even though we queried where it was and it is still stating on their website that guests receive bottle on arrival. Breakfast was made with cheap produce - especially the beans - never tasted any so awful. Returning from a day out on our second day’s stay we were flabbergasted to find we had had no room service whatsoever - bed still unmade and no cups washed - nothing. We had to leave a note in the hallway on our second night for a drop of fresh milk, there was nobody around to ask. We had stayed at the Holiday Inn in Stratford the weekend before for 2 nights at a total cost of £125 with a fantastic choice and quality of breakfast, on-site parking, scrupulous room service and very polite staff. We paid £140 for 2 nights at this B&B - we were definitely well & truly overcharged - and they have the cheek to request full payment on arrival and in cash only - no cheques or credit cards accepted! If they didn’t nobody would pay their exorbitant prices. DO NOT BOOK.

decor of this period guest house was quite good and the friendliness and knowledge of local area by the landlady was very good however on arriving room wasnt up to standard , cleanliness was an issue with litter still under bed, bed linen didnt look very fresh, badly stained carpets and bath was unusable in superior ensuite due to splintered enamel also ensuit had a disdinctive odour of drains or something, no complimentary toileteries, although an used bar of soap was left in the sink but no plugs for sink, no advertised bottle of wine, tea/coffee facilites had to be asked for when booked in and not replenished during our stay, television picture was poor quality not watchable, good choice of breakfast catered for all, however the term "local produce" seems to mean "asda's own brand" , fruit not fresh, cheap sausages and beans, tinned tomatoes everything seemed to have come from the cheapest source possible, some guests did not appreciate being served breakfast by the landlady in a pair of shorts on a rainy day!!! The free parking as advertised was not true to form as there are no parking facilities at this hotel and one guest had a parking ticket whilst unloading.
i understand this is a guest house but when paying hotel prices i believe some standards should be met, thankfully we had only booked for 2 nights. as most things advertised did not materialise , would not recommend this guest house to anyone.

I stayed in this lodge for a weekend stay in York. It was exectly what I expected from a guesthouse; friendly service, small but functional rooms, and a more personal touch to things.

It has been noted in other reviews that the bath is in a state of disrepair, but this did not stop several guests from taking advantage of it during my stay. The owner also made a point of apologising for its appearance (the flaked enamel) and informed me that she has booked the repairs for the upcoming weeks.

Due to an early commitment on the Sunday I had to request if I could check out late, this was agreed with no problems or additional charges.

Obvioulsy if you want a spacious room with satellite tv and a mini bar then this isn;t for you, but if you'd prefer a more homely touch then The Hilton Lodge should meet your needs
