My husband and I stayed at l'Agriturismo Casa Mattei from April 1st to April 3rd, 2013 and honestly our experience was above and beyond our expectations! Originally we had been renting an apartment in Rome which is owned by the same couple that runs l'Agriturismo Casa Mattei and they had suggested we come out to the country for a couple of days and stay at their guest house there.
We were not sure what to expect, but were blown away by the elegance and charm of the place immediately. Each room is unique with beautiful touches of a classic country home. The decor is NOT your basic, run of the mill, sterile and generic nick knack garbage that you would find at a chain hotel, but incorporates hand painted furniture, brass works done by the owner's grandfather, lovely local art and an overall warm ambiance of a family home, complete with little treats such as biscuits, teas and little surprises.
Our room was comprised of a small kitchen with everything you'd need to make basic meals (including homemade olive oil, sugar, coffee etc); a sitting area with a table, chairs, a sofa and TV (why one would watch TV when in such a beautiful area is beyond me, however); our own separate bedroom, with a king sized bed, a single bed and a beautiful cupboard to hang clothes; and a bathroom with plenty of towels and a nice hot shower with good water pressure.
Not only did we have access to our own room, but to the common area downstairs. This is a large room on the main floor, under the private rooms upstairs, where we were staying. It is perfect for group functions, large dinners or just mingling with other guests. This area is also beautifully decorated with local art and simple, yet beautiful touches of the region and its culture.
As for the location of l'Agriturismo Casa Mattei, it is perfect. Very close to the Cascata Delle Marmore, a splendid waterfall that is a must-see in the region. It is also nestled among tons of little villages with history that will blow your mind! If you want to head out to Narni and see the area that inspired the author of 'The Chronicles of Narnia', not to mention the Narni Sotterranea for some inquisition history, you are a stones-throw away. Of course to head out to Assisi is a must from here if you would like to see where St Francis of Assisi lived! There is so much to do in this region, 'The Green Heart of Italy', we could have stayed for three weeks rather than three days!
The owners of this establishment are amazing people as well! They showed hospitality that is very hard to come by in today's competitive and cut-throat tourism industry. They treat their guests in a manner that is personal and caring. They went out of their way to make us feel at home and comfortable. Also the fact that we do not speak Italian was not a problem. I was able to converse freely with Gina in French, and my husband had great fun chatting with Constantino in English. In all honestly, we felt as though we were visiting distant relatives, rather than just being customers at yet another run of the mill guest house, this is a rare talent that Gina and Constantino have mastered!
So all in all we would highly recommend l'Agriturismo Casa Mattei to anyone wanting to truly experience what the Italian countryside has to offer. From amazing natural beauty, to awe-inspiring history and a taste of the hospitality and personality of Italian people, this is the place to check out!!
Thanks Gina and Constantino!!
