We had a great time visiting the Nabatean ruins, as well as other sites in the area. The scenery is beautiful and vastly different than that of the rest of Saudi Arabia. None of the sites were crowded, which was very nice. Of course, the highlight was the famous Nabatean tombs--they are breathtaking! There are many tombs in this area and they do all look similar, but the subtle differences between them are interesting to note. You can go inside the tombs as well (beware--they smell like pee!). My husband and I had a great time climbing around on the rock formations where the river used to run through (near the religious area). You can climb up quite high and have an amazing view of the surrounding area. The only downside is that this place is so far from civilization...8+ hours from Jeddah= too many germ-infested roadside "bathrooms." And, of course, you can only visit if you happen to be in KSA. So if you are, I recommend it!

It’s the twin city of Petra. The poor man’s Petra. The monuments here are just as grandiose as Petra…

To get to Madein Salah, I flew from Riyadh to Medina.
At Medina airport, there are 5 or 6 car hire companies. I had no trouble hiring with only a UK license and a visitor visa.
The drive is long but easy, there are petrol staions and the odd shop along the way.
Having a car in Al-Ula was well worth it. I was easily able to visit the following by car & foot.
MS, Al-Ula old town, Lions Tomb (if you beg for long enough at the entrance, you may be allowed in, alternatively organise a pass before arriving, the Lions tombs are a 30 min walk from the north entrance, it's a beautiful walk), Elephant rock (this is a 15 min walk from the road, well worth it), Mountain picknic area (name forgotten).
During my trip I was twice invited to share drinks with locals at their homes, they were very interested to meet a foreigner, keep an open mind when visiting the area, the locals are incredibly friendly and it would be a real shame not to meet some.

A place to visit to better understand what was the great Nabatean Kingdom and culture. This also give a particular highlight on Saudi Arabia historical background.

Expectacular. I really recommend this trip to all of those that leave near it. We drove for 8 hours and was worth it.
