“Excellent accommodations and hospitality for a visit to Clare Island”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

My wife enjoys the Sawdoctors' song, "Clare Island," while walking and listening to her mp3, so she had the idea for our trip to Ireland to visit Clare Island for her birthday. We saw good write-ups on O'Grady's Guesthouse and got quick responses from Helen O'Grady confirming our reservation request for 3 rooms for our small group. We took the 20-minute ferry ride from Roonagh on the mainland which dropped us a 3-minute walk from O'Grady Guesthouse, and right at Grace O'Malley's (the "Pirate Queen") small castle guarding the harbor. Helen gave us a very warm greeting and suggestions for things to do and a restaurant for dinner (Sailors Bar & Restaurant - excellent!). Our rooms were very clean and nicely furnished, and the double for my wife and I fronted the ocean with a real nice view. The building is a lovely modern home with very nice attractive decor.

We enjoyed an afternoon hike down the road with gorgeous ocean views and rolling hills landscape populated by many sheep including this spring's newborn lambs. At the end of our hike we reached Grainne O'Malley's grave and chapel. Back at the guesthouse, a 10-minute walk along the shore took us to the Sailors Bar for dinner, which is a very fine restaurant in decor and food quality and where we celebrated my wife's birthday watching pods of dolphins leaping in the ocean. Helen served us a delicious breakfast, we enjoyed the morning sunshine on the picnic table out front while waiting to meet our departing ferry back to the mainland. All in all we had a delightful visit to Clare Island and we highly recommend O'Grady's Guesthouse if you have a chance to get to the island.

We just spent one day on Clare Island and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Helen and her husband did all to make the best out of our stay including a lovely boat and fishing trip. Breakfast was fabulous.
Rooms are clean and cosy.

We had a truly memorable trip. Helen could not do enough to keep us happy. The room was spotless, the food delicious and she even lit the fire in the lounge so we were toasty warm. We were very lucky as the weather was dry and not windy. After a cooked breakfast we set off for a walk around the island. Everyone we met was very friendly, but we had an particularly entertaining time with Bernie at the Abbey! We sat in the sunshine eating our packed lunch that Helen had made for us, then called for a couple of pints in the Community Centre before another lovely dinner. After a calm ferry trip back to Roonagh, we headed off for further adventures in Clifden.
Go to Clare Island and stay at O'Gradys, it's a real gem.

Room Tip: They are all beautiful.

Great place to stay - an annual event for our family. Near ferry and across the road from the beach. Rooms large and spacious. Helen is a great hostess. Very clean and tidy. We look forward to our annual trip each year.

Room Tip: Sea views are worth it.

For a perfect, peace-filled, getaway holiday, Clare Island in Clew Bay, Co.Mayo is hard to beat. But add to that a comfortable, charming, friendly family-run guest-house and one of the best chefs we've ever come across and there is no competition! Chef Alan O'Grady produced two miraculous dinners for our (difficult!) group of eight, which included a vegan, five vegetarians, two lactose-intolerants and one gluten-free diner. Nothing daunted, endlessly and graciously accomodating, Alan produced two amazing three-course dinners. Superbly tasty, full of texture, colour, flavour, flair and imagination, these are two of the best dinners we have ever eaten. As we were there to walk, we also needed filling, reviving food and we certainly got this - and then some! Helen's welcome and care are second to none, the rooms bright and airy, the beds comfortable - you couldn't ask for more! Go there!

Stayed here recently and we were absolutely thrilled with everything. It is more like a Hotel than a guesthouse. Such a warm welcome from Helen, the owner, our rooms were spacious, spotlessly clean and mega comfortable!Breakfast was superb.Lovely lounge also for guests, although we didnt need to stay in as the weather was fabulous.Just a few steps away from the beach!
Would recommend to all and we will definately go back.Very reasonable, great value for money.
