Going to start off by putting some peoples fears to rest! When I first saw this hotel on TripAdvisor some photos of the rooms looked appalling. The rooms looked old and dated however the hotel is almost fully restyled and the only rooms left looking dated are the large family rooms. However the couples rooms are lovely, kinda small but very clean modern and comfortable.

The hotel itself is huge and there are loads of amenities. Two restaurants, a bar, two pools, a spa and a confrence centre!

The rooms are not large I would say they're adequate. They are very modern and the beds are very comfortable. Bathrooms are fabulous very nicely styled with a huge shower. Also we had a small balcony with an incredible view of the valley! Tv in the room is fine comes with 4 english channels which are skynews bbc cnn and aljazera if I remember correctly. there is also a movie rental system where you rent.movies through the tv. They're 11euro a movie but they are fairly recent releases. I dont go on holidays to watch tv so this wasnt really used. Wifi is expensive, however I had it included with the room. Its very slow but fine for emails and a little browsing dont bother trying to watch videos it wont happen.

Breakfast!! My favorite part of the day! Its quiet good here there is alot to chose from! There are cold meats, fuits, cheeses, cerials, breads, freshly made pastries, juices and coffee. There is also a hot selection which usually had sauages, rashers and eggs. There was also a fourth hot food which alternated between hot tomatoes and roast potatoes. Sausages were crap... which was the only let however the view from the breakfast area balcony was incredible!!

Location location location. ... a car is a must, dont bother going without renting a car. If you really dont want to rent I suppose you could get a train to the local town of barga and then get a taxi from barga to the hotel! However if you want to go anywhere a car will make it so much easier and theres ample space for parking at the hotel! The local town of barga is about 5-10km away and is gorgeous! Very rustic and some nice restaurants but nothing worth writing about. If you want to go for great food you need to travel to Lucca which is about a 25 min drive away. But an absolute must incredible place. Apart from that florence is about 1 hour and the beach is about an hour too. These times however are driver dependant I had full insurance on the car so I was driving like Schumacher..... that been said the roads around the hotel will make the most confident driver feel like a learner...... especially the roads to barga. Also to be noted if using gps it will try bring you through barga and then up a mountain!! Going through barga is fine but dont go up the mountain you'll know what I mean as soon as you start driving up the mountain. ...

On a final note the staff are wonderful the hotel is very nice and incredibly well set up however a bit remote!

Regardless of ALL of the many opinions voiced that it would be difficult to explore the area without a car, my husband and I threw caution to the wind and did just that! We landed at Pisa Airport on September 4th and took the train to Lucca where we missed our connecting train; however another one showed up just a few minutes after we arrived. A darling young lady on the train was so nice to call the hotel to inform them that we would be arriving on the next train and there they sent a taxi there to greet us with a comfortable mercedes van. We arrived on a Wednesday and Thursday happens to be the Street Market day in Castelnuove Di Garfagnana. We asked the wonderful Serchio (the owner of the taxi company) to return for us at the resort the next day and take us back to the train station. I think the charge was 15 euros. The market was just one or two stops north of Barga-Gallicano and from the station, we walked to the market without problems. We returned around 3 or 4 and they called a taxi for us at the train station office and they were there quickly. One comment for you: You can buy your train tickets quite easily from the bar just across the lot from the train station. The machine at the train station only takes coins and it can be confusing the first time. No problem at the bar where you can also buy an espresso or breakfast roll, plus you get the added benefit of making a new friend! The second day, Maria, at the Renaissance Navigator desk gave us all the correct information to take the train to Cinque Terre and back. We took the 7:30ish train (another trip to the station with Serchio), early for many people, but we wanted to explore all 5 towns and return in the same day. It was a pretty trip up the valley with so many tunnels!! We really enjoyed it. It's not a luxury train as everything is 2nd class, but we had no problem with it. WE changed trains at La Spezia and hopped on the train that gives you a day pass to go back and forth through the 5 towns for the entire day. After climbing the 380 steps up to Corniglia (you can also take a bus), we decided to drop one of the towns from our day of activities. 4 were enough and we spent time in each village before heading back to Il Ciocco. We arrived back there about 8 or 8:30 and slept well that night. On Saturday and Sunday, the hotel operates a shuttle to Barga and the train station, so we took advantage of that and were ready at the time it departed (about 9AM). There were several couples on the shuttle who had cars with them but wished they didn't because of the parking and navigating through traffic. No traffic on the train. We spent the day in Lucca which is very interesting and can take a full day of your itinerary. Their street market happened to be on a Saturday, so that fit into our schedule as well. On Sunday, my husband went horse back riding at the equestrian center nearby and he was the only rider that day, so they went way up in the hills. Be aware that they only offer the english riding, so if you're not use to that style, they will require you to ride in their ring first at an additional cost while they determine if you can handle the terrain and their method of riding. No problem for my husband. I stayed at the hotel with its many options, reading by the pool or indulging in the spa offerings. We left early Monday for Firenze, so one last taxi ride to the station. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this property. We ate most dinners there and there is enough choice to do that. There is also a small restaurant just downhill from the front of it and they make wonderful, inexpensive pizza if you want a change. We were very sorry to have to leave, but thoroughly enjoyed our stay WITHOUT a car. If you want to explore the neighboring towns, you could always rent a car in Lucca for a day or two, but the lack of the car did not AT ALL inhibit our ability to see and experience the area. I neglected to mention that we walked to Barga on Sunday, got lost (our own fault) and eventually got there just before the sky opened up in a torrential rain!! We had lunch during the rain and then got a taxi back to Il Ciocco. I would most definitely go there again. The staff is wonderful and the rooms, especially the showers, are really, really nice. It is a little more remote than say Florence or Lucca, but that is the attraction of the place. We made some special memories there thanks to its natural beauty and welcoming staff which I'm sure rubbed of on all of the guests staying there. Absolutely delightful!. In the end, with our taxi and shuttle fares, we still paid substantially less than renting a car with insurance and navigation on it. We have rented many times in the past, but ourselves more rested and relaxed by taking the train. We booked first class from Florence to Napoli on the fast train - only 2 stops, and then back to Rome. They have a silent car where cell phones are not allowed, so it was very quiet and relaxing. Questions? Feel free to email me.

Room Tip: We have Room 501 or 514 which had a larger balcony and room than the others, and of course was on t...

Getting to the hotel is an experience itself. It is up in the mountain so the view is fantastic! Elena at the Front Desk is extremelly helpful at all times, she was always smiling and greeting us every time she saw us. The rooms look they have been renovated, super clean and very comfortable beds. We had dinner in La Veranda: the service and the quality of the food was great. It is located right in between Castelnuovo and Barga. We were to Castelnuevo a sunday afternoon and there was a nice market with a lot of locals which made it a great experience. Barga was really nice too. It was not crowded at all so we got to enjoy the town with all the houses and small roads. The hotel is so nice that you don't want to leave it but of course the region has so much to offer that you have to go out and explore the town.

The hotel is sited on the slope of a hill with a private access road. It offers a splendid view on the medieval town of Barga with its very beautiful Romanesque church.
The front desk manager who was alone at the time was a bit harassed by phone calls coming in constantly, but he remained very quiet and friendly and we were signed in swiftly and the bags brought up to our very comfortably and tastefully furnished room on the 5th floor.
We booked a table at the hotel's à la carte restaurant on the first floor. The terrace offers a terrific view on the valley. The food is excellent and although you probably pay more than in most of the restaurants in "nearby" (20-30 mins. drive) Barga or Castelnuovo, I consider it good value for your money. Excellent wines at reasonable prices too. We visited the restaurant twice during our 4 nights stay and were not disappointed.
The breakfast buffet was excellent
The hotel has an outside as well as an indoor swimming pool and a gym with quite modern equipment. Also a spa which we did not use however.
The hotel staff was very helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view on the valley.

This was where we stayed for half our 10th Anniversary trip. The resort has so much potential...million dollar views, a picturesque town nearby and several small local wineries. But present management is missing the boat.

The staff here are terrific...especially Daniella and Elena at Reception...but while the resort tries to be a four or five star type of property, it comes across as unjustifiably expensive.

The pool and spa areas are a disaster. They close at 7:30pm...no, seriously...just as the restaurants open. No late night dip or relaxing with a nightcap in the jacuzzi here. By the time most folks get back to the resort from a day walking up and down mountain streets, the best muscle-relaxer shuts down. The spa receptionist is arrogant and rude. There is little to no assistance and no walkthrough at the spa. The "jacuzzi" is an alcove in the indoor pool and stays the same temp. You just get to turn on jets. Our massage was great except for the mandatory disposable man-thong you are forced to wear for your relaxation massage. Women do not have this humiliation forced on them though. Very sexist and insulting.

The onsite restaurants have sensational views, but are expensive with mediocre food. The lobby bar offers cocktails at ridiculous prices...an Aperatol spritz was 9 euro each. That's about $14 PER COCKTAIL for a very common Italian aperitif.

We would certainly go back to Barga...but would rent a villa or apartment rather than return here.

Room Tip: Make sure to eat at in Barga if you visit! Outstanding food.

We stayed here on our drive from Venice to Rome. This allowed us to drive through and experience the authentic Italian countryside. Our Garmin GPS, loaded with the European Map, never let us down. No doubt this luxurious property is off the beaten path, but with a rental car you can easily explore Barga, Lucca, Pisa and Florence. The rooms were newly renovated when the resort was converted to a Renaissance property. Everyone's hospitality at this relaxing and comfortable resort was outstanding. There is nothing within walking distance and I highly recommend staying here with a rental car. However, you could easily stay, be pampered, eat well, experience the fantastic mountain views and never leave this serene property. We hope to travel here again. As a Marriott Platinum Member we received free breakfast. There was no charge for parking onsite.
