“one of the best marriott hotels!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2012

The view is incredible. The small twon of bargo is lovely. The staff is extremely helpful. They made you feel like home. The dinner there is also great. Good memory there and will be back there again and again...

Room Tip: just ask for a room with view, you will not regret.

We stayed here 17-21 October and enjoyed this place so much that we stayed an extra night! This hotel was acquired by Marriott a little over six months ago. According to employees it was previously family-owned and most of their clients were Italian. Since it has become a Marriott, many more guests are American or at least English-speaking so some employees are taking English language classes to improve their skills. This is a large resort and our impression was that they catered to corporate or large group events but their individual customer service was still very high quality.

Good things:
1. Location on top of a mountain offers breathtaking views. We were in room 603 with a balcony and never got tired of the beautiful scenery and the view of Barga in the distance!
2. The local towns, restaurants and markets offered outstanding opportunities to explore the countryside, sample the variety of wondrous cuisine (porcine mushrooms were in season and delicious) , and indulge in large quantities of the superb but inexpensive vino di tavola!!
3. The hotel staff (Maria in particular) were most helpful in planning our activities and making reservations. We enjoyed horseback riding, wine tasting near Montecarlo, and exploring Barga and Castelnuovo. We also really enjoyed touring Lucca (about 1 hour drive), Pisa (about 1.5 hour drive), and the west coast.
4. The hotel facility offers a pool and spa as well as very nice indoor and outdoor lounge and dining. Marriott has invested a good bit in repairs and upgrades and will continue to do so for quite some time but this is already one of the most modern and spacious hotels in the region.
5. It seems like many Marriott Rewards members are only starting to become aware of this place so this is a good time to make reservations as we expect the price will eventually go up.
6. It's Tuscany!!

Less than ideal things:
1. Our air conditioning wasn't working but, since we were returning each evening, we didn't report it and just opened the balcony doors which cooled the room nicely.
2. Roof top parking lot is tight and can be a challenge, especially for large cars. Only alternative is gravel parking lot down the hill a bit.
3. A car is essential--preferably one that has plenty of power to get up the hill to the hotel and good brakes when coming down.
4. At times the front desk can become quite busy and somewhat overwhelmed, especially if there are only one or two employees working at the time. Also, as they receive more foreign tourists, they really need a full-time concierge.

Overall this was a most enjoyable location and the hotel staff were quite friendly and helpful. We definitey want to return!

Room Tip: A high floor overlooking the valley, mountains and Barga is best!

My wife and I recently had the privilege of staying at this gem of a hotel. I can tell you that I was so impressed with not only the physical element of the resort, but the staff as well. The rooms are very nicely equipped and the bedding extremely comfortable. The lobby, bar and restaurants were amazing with beautiful furnishings as well.
The whole resort sits on top of a mountain with spectacular views of the valley below, and the town of barga in the distance. This is a must visit place to anyone who loves Tuscany!...which is most. It is the best kept secret in the region. As a hotel professional, I honestly appreciated all the details and hospitality of everyone. My applause goes to Antonia, Maria and Elena from the front office who were absolutly amazing!!! ( you have to ask for them...trust me) and Maria Pia from the lobby bar, who couldn't do more for anyone...she was so sweet. The staff always were wanting to assist, suggest and willing to please in all the details guests love to see and hear. My wife and I cannot wait to visit again. Thank you for such a great visit, but more so, a great memory!

We stayed for three wonderful nights in early October and really enjoyed our stay. We had a room on a high floor overlooking the mountains and valley below. The hotel feels so new and fresh. The room was very comfortable and well approinted. The staff was great. The breakfast was excellent and we had dinner one evening at the hotel and it was fantastic, good service, great food at a fair price. We loved the location, the hotel is situated in the foothills with a nice winding drive up to the property. We enjoyed having a glass of wine on our balcony each evening, a perfect way to wind down before bed. We highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high flor with a view of the mountians and valley.

My family enjoyed our 3-week vacation at this lovely Marriott resort. I can only imagine the challenges associated with renovating an existing property to an international standard hotel, and Marriott has done a great job thus far. Elevator cabs can be larger and the parking over the roof area is challenging to navigate unless you are driving a small car. We really enjoyed the beautiful views, pools and spa, and the wonderful meals on the veranda each day. The staff was very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable about the local areas. Antonia was especially diligent in her attention to details and in providing excellent customer service. We will definitely return, and would highly recommend this resort.

This is a wonderful hotel and resort. It is being run by a General Manager, Georges Midleje, a very charming and experienced man who takes his time with every guest, runs this hotel like it is his home and in this regard is there very long hours. He is doing an excellent job and it is because of his expertise that we see a hotel that in the future will be popular not just for Americans visiting Italy but for Italians and Europeans who wish to visit a remarkable place that although away from things, is in fact only l hour from Lucca and really not that hard to drive. Okay, the area.....where to begin! Barga, an ancient city that you can view from the mist coming out of the sky in the early mornings, a joy to visit and you can hike there directly from the hotel in one hour! The hotel has absolutely everything you could want in a resort....two swimming pools, tennis courts, spa, hair dresser, massages, extremely casual attire needed, delicious food and a great pizza place right outside of the restaurant if you wish to not eat too much one evening. You can order and dine in the lounge, outside, in the restaurant, endless places, anywhere you are comfortable. The staff is so well trained because of the manager and it is very pleasant to deal with any one at the front desk. We booked this trip on a day's notice. We live in the city of Florence and wanted...no needed....to get out for a few days to relax. We had been reading about Il Ciocco for sometime and took this opportunity to try it. To arrive there WITHOUT a car you need to take the train from Florence to Lucca or there is a stop close to the hotel (and also a shuttle or taxi that will take you to the property)....from there you can take a bus again to the station and again the bus or shuttle. HOWEVER, to fully explore this area, you benefit greatly from the car. There are so many things to see and do and frankly unless you are looking for a respite after touring through Italy...or need to just 'chill' as we did and are content to stay and enjoy the hotel's facilities, then a car is the way to go. I also think that family reunions would be wonderful there and an American Thanksgiving if perhaps you have a child going to university in Pisa or Florernce and are flying in for the holidays. It is simply perfect for this. The manager also will work with guests to make anything reasonable happen for them if he can do it. The beds are all comfortable and in keeping with the standards set by Marriott...in many ways surpass these guidelines. The staff is fully trained and so professional. It is decorated very beautifully and no expense seems to have been spared. We went to visit a wonderfully unique restaurant called La Ceragetta, IsolaSanta, way up in the mountains with friends who picked us up for the return to the city. You simply cannot do this without a car. We had one lunch in Barga and all the others in the various venues at the Il Ciocco where we stayed for 4 days. We are planning a return visit and are telling all of our friends both here and in the states about this resort. We loved it.

Room Tip: Of course the rooms in the refurbished section facing the valley are pristine as others have stated.
