“Good for families, not great for couples”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

This hotel is clean, well constructed, with upscale bedding and the convenience of kitchens or kitchenettes, and it's designed for families. If you are looking for a place to bring children, this is a great fit. If you're looking for a romantic, quiet place for couples, stay elsewhere.

The Pros: Literally next to the Heavenly Gondola, clean, upgraded construction, upscale environment, service oriented staff, kids and teens activities.

The Cons: Kids running wild, noise through connecting room doors, pool too small for number of guests, one restaurant, valet-only parking.

If you are looking for a place to bring your family with school-age kids, this is a great place. You'll enjoy the children's room and your teens will also have their own place to hang out. If you're planning to buy groceries and use the full kitchen in your villa you will have a long walk with your groceries.

If you are a couple looking for a romantic location, you may want to stay elsewhere. The too-shallow pool is packed with kids throwing things, playing "Marco Polo" and splashing people sitting around the pool, running in the hallways and having a great time while their parents ignore them. Wet Frisbees and footballs flew by us poolside and the security guard on patrol said he only intervenes if there's actual physical contact with thrown objects or obscene language.

Our group had two villas and two suites, and none of us plan to return, but we were all adults without children. It just depends on what you want from your vacation and who is in your party.

Room Tip: Get a room without a connecting door if you want quiet.

This summer we visited northern California and lake Tahoe area with our family. We were in the region for 8 days and visited San Francisco, napa and Lake Tahoe. We saw 3 different terrains during our trip but by far Lake Tahoe part of the trip was beautiful.

The lake was freezing cold even in july but the water was exceptionally clear and the colors from various points ranged from blue to green and all shades in between. We stayed in the marriot timber lodge in ca part of Tahoe. The resort is perfectly situated, next to a lot of restaurants, shopping and offers plenty excursions. The closest beach from the hotel is few blocks about a 10 min walk. You get access to beach as a guest of hotel. However there are so many places to drive around the lake to enjoy different aspects of lake.

We did the whole 72 mile round trip of the lake and it took a whole day as we stopped in so many places to do small hikes and take in the view. if you have time and a car, please do this. There are a lot of public beaches as well. The hotel pools are nice and the kids had a good time enjoying those after the cold water of the lake. The only iffy thing is that there is really no parking for the hotel. You either use street parking or nearby casino parking. The parking rate is $26/day but that includes multiple use of your car.

All in all we had a good time at the resort. the beds were comfortable. food options were good and very reasonably priced. Kids really enjoyed the pizza place in the resort. Pizza's were really good too.

Sandwiched between the Heavenly Valley Mall and Harrah's Casino, the Timber Lodge is another fine Marriott time-share property. This family oriented resort offers all the services and amenities you would expect from a four star resort. Plenty of activities are offered for children of all ages, and many were there to enjoy them. The resort is virtually steps away from the Heavenly Mountain Gondola, a 2.4 mile ride (by tram and ski-lift) up the mountain, where extraordinary views of Lake Tahoe await you.

Six of us, spanning three generations shared a two-bedroom villa on the top floor of the Sierra (main) building. The villa, consisting of a one-bedroom unit and a studio unit with interior lock-off door, had a fully equipped kitchen with modern appliances, two bathrooms and separate living & dining areas. The villa did not have a balcony and it appeared that less than 10% of the villas did (there are only a dozen two bedroom villas with balconies; the remainder are three-bedroom units). Compared to the other eight Marriott time-share properties we have stayed at, our villa at the Timber Lodge was among the smallest - not "roomy" by any stretch but still comfortable. The villa was nicely furnished, had comfortable beds and a good working air conditioning system. The free wireless internet connection worked fine and my only issue was the small room safe that was only big enough to hold cash, jewelry and documents (too small for cameras, computer/tablets, etc.).

The only restaurant on site was Fire & Ice (see separate review); a Mongolian BBQ style eatery with full service bar. We dined there one evening and I left with mixed feelings. The concept was great - choose from a vast selection of meats, fish, vegetables, noodles and pastas, a dozen different sauces, then watch your creation being grilled on a giant BBQ. My beef and chicken was a little over-cooked and the calamari was too rubbery to eat. The scallops, shrimp and fish, however were pretty good, as was the salad bar. I thought the $28.00 price tag was reasonable, considering the location and the fact it was "all you can eat." The restaurant runs a Happy Hour with reasonably priced beers and mixed drinks. Glad we tried it but once was enough for us.

If forced to complain about something, it would be the mandatory valet parking fee of $26.00 per day. If staying on a time-share exchange, the fee on the first vehicle is waived (fee on first two vehicles waived if staying in a three bedroom villa). Non-exchange guests are charged the parking fee on all vehicles. Some of the guests parked their vehicles in the casino parking lot to avoid the fee at the resort.

Everyone in our party enjoyed our stay at the Timber Lodge. The service was great and all staff members were very helpful and friendly. If returning to South Lake Tahoe with extended family, I would definitely return. If travelling only with my wife, I would try the Marriott Grand Residence located next door.

It was my first time to visit Lake Tahoe last May 2013. Was there with some Canada and US based family members, who sourced this lovely place and arranged the bookings. And they couldn't have chosen a better place in terms of location. The iconic Lake Tahoe was less than a kilometer away.

Beautiful surroundings (it was truly lovely in spring with all the wonderful and colorful tulips in bloom), nice, clean and spacious rooms, accessibility to hotels/casinos (Harrahs was just a few steps away) and restaurants. They also had the Heavenly Cable terminal here, though it was non-operational for this particular season. .

Valet service was efficient, and the Timber Lodge staff were very helpful and friendly.

We would not hesitate to stay here again the next time we find ourselves in Tahoe.

Limited balconies and inexperienced concierge were disappointing. Valet service was incredibly fast for the volume of cars they were moving. Location is next to casinos but a half mile walk to the lake. What I found most disappointing was on July 4 a team of four managers was at the pool gathering chairs for a family and then one manager stood guard over the chairs for 32 minutes until one family member came to the pool. This chair service was not offered to any other family. When I questioned the manager they said the family had reserved chairs with personal items at 8am when the pool opened and was surprised that when they went to use the chairs at 1pm they were gone. If managers are going to play favorites I think you should find out before you booked where you fit into their priorities.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony when you book

This was our firth year staying at Timber Lodge. If you are looking for a cozy cabin in the mountains, this is not your place. The key here is location, nice rooms (but no balconies), excellent valet service and the ability to have a kitchen with a one or two bedroom suite, or a small service kitchen area in a studio. The pool can be very hectic....but remember this is summer in Tahoe and a family get away location for many Northern Californians. We never eat on property. If you do your homework you will find many restaurants within walking distance and some a short drive. We use the Marriott as a home base and go off to hike, kayak, sail and enjoy the beautiful Tahoe area.

I took my wife here for her birthday and we had a blast. The hotel staff was excellent at check in and overall feel from all the staff was friendly and open. We checked in at around 9 pm on Thurs. evening and Julian from the front desk assisted us. His demeanor and professionalism showed through as he checked us in. We had a great time and the room was top notch. We went to a water aerobics class given by Amanda and was treated to a great early morning work out. Amanda even shared a local restaurant recommendation - the Red Hut - which we went to and had a great breakfast. We also had the opportunity to eat at the restaurant - Fire and Ice - our server Fiona was excellent and even went above and beyond her way to find out about a local event that was taking place that evening.

Overall our experience was top notch and the hotel was very convenient to everything. We had an excellent time at an excellent resort.
