Tallac Historic Site is a fascinating look at wealthy Californian life at the turn of the century. The homes are closed to the public from about mid-October to mid-April, but you can access the property to stroll among the "cabins" via a paved walking path from the nearby Taylor Creek Visitor Center.

Be sure to stop by the kitchen, listen to the dog bark and read the sign why he needs to bark. Everything in the area was well kept and the scenery is lovely.

Tallac is located on the shores of Lake Tahoe with many old buildings for you to visit and enjoy. See how the wealthy lived in days gone by. There are also many trails to wander along the beautiful lakeshore. I would recommend taking the trail left (west) of the buildings. Keep going and you will come along the most beautiful beach complete with a marsh, beautiful trees and mountains in the background. The beach is dog friendly and a local favorite.

This place should be on everyone's list to visit if you want to get a feel how the affluent vacationed at Lake Tahoe during the early part of the 20th Century. A tour of the Pope House certainly gave one the feel how it may have been living, dining and simply enjoying the time spent there during its heydey. After the 1 hour tour, we took a gander around the grounds where there were little cottages strewn around which were for guests (one notable guest being Rudolph Valentino). There is also a museum with lots of period pictures with information plus a video and small gift shop too.

We were not going to visit here but we picked it up on the nature trails from the visitor centre. Two houses open for viewing one has an interesting video about the history of these chalets built by the wealthy in the 1920s onwards. Other buidings on site too but not open.
