“An excellent stay”
Reviewed April 13, 2012

We picked the Three Cocks hotel as the base for our 22nd wedding anniversary weekend, staying for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. Roy and Judith are excellent hosts and very helpful. They employ local young people to help out and are doing a good job of imbuing them with a work ethic without being patronising. The food was good and the bed was very comfortable - normally my wife doesn't sleep very well in a strange bed at least on the first night but we both had quality sleep throughout our stay. The area is rural and because of that there is very little traffic noise. Hay on Wye is only about 6 miles away. Hereford, Brecon and Builth Wells are all within an hour's drive. There is a lovely flat - topped hill a few miles to the east, above the remains of an ancient stone circle (not very obvious but there is a car park beside it now). The hill can be climbed in about 20 minutes from the car park and is popular with parascenders. I climbed it on the sunday and the views were excellent. The area is home to small herds of ponies and Shetland ponies - I found the Shetland ponies on top of the hill.

Room Tip: We had a rear facing room.

We stayed here for 3 nights because we thought it well placed to see the area, and it was! Just by Hay on Wye, the Brecon Beacons and the Black mountain to the south and the Elan Valley to the north. The whole place is spotlessly clean and well presented. The bed comfortable, the bathroom spacious and modern. Probably most important, Roy and Judith just couldn't do enough for us. So friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent. The menu is short and quite simple but the quality of the ingredients and the cooking is all the better for it, and none of your Michelin portions here either! Considering the standards, the price is good value too. We would recommend to anyone.

Sadly my mum passed away in June, having sold her bungalow we needed after driving from Canterbury an accessible, comfy, good food place to stay on our visits to friends and relatives.Having worked at the hotel during my school and college days in the 60's I thought it would be great, if we could stay there, and it worked a treat having just spent our first three nights .Judith and Roy are most welcoming along with the log fire, pay attention to detail, delicious eats, luxurious beds and bedding,a relaxing ambience and nothing is too much for them-needless to say we are looking forward to our next stay in April.

We were looking for a place for tea and stopped at this hotel. Fabulous place for tea. So relaxing and yet so elegant. Don't miss it.

The Three Cocks is located close to some of the finest scenery in the world. From here you are half a day's walk from Hay Bluff or the Twmpa. If you start early in the day you can get to Capel y Fin and back. Also not to be missed is the lovely walk along the bank of the Wye from Glasbury to the bridge at Broughrood. That said, the hotel is right on the main road which is a negative point. The inn is a large, imposing place of the Olde Worlde type and this is also reflected inside. Roy the proprietor is friendly and helpful, especially if you take his advice and do things his way rather than yours. Some of the staff are the nicest Welsh womenyou could ever find. Some staff can be brusque almost to the point of rudeness. I spent three nights here in a small room which was adequate but not very comfortable, although the modern bathroom was first rate. Breakfasts are fine and the coffee is particularly good, but they do need to find a way to keep it hot. Dinners are more problematic largely because the menu does not change. If there is little on the menu to your liking and you have something particular in mind, Roy will try to get it in--if he approves of what you want. Rates are reasonable and if you are satisfied with what you get you will consider it good value.

We loved the calm and warm atmosphere and very comfortable room. The cuisine was excellent and we wanted for nothing. We would recommend it to our friends.

Though our room was very small, the bath was lovely and the bed comfortable.
Food was only fair - breakfast was fine, but dinner food was badly overcooked.
Hosts are a delight and extra helpful. The inn itself is beautiful and atmospheric as well as well placed.
WiFi unreliable.

Room Tip: Get rear-facing large room.
