“Restaurant always good”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

Have been to the Craven Heifer at least half a dozen times now, only over the past twelve months, and the food and service has always been first class. Visited with friends from Kent last week, and they were very favourably impressed. The lunchtime menu, which extends to 6-30 in the evening represents very good value, a choice of either two or three courses, but if you want to push the boat out and have a la carte, a splendid choice with some really tempting specials. In September one of the specials was a trio of fillet steak, absolutely fabulous. Local produce, good beer and wine list, all with superb service in a very convivial atmosphere.

Highly recommended, not just pub food, far better!

The title pretty much says it all! My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights in October half term, and what a treat it was.
Lets start with the food - I've eaten food all over the world, but the one true barometer is a good steak, and this place blew away anything I've ever tried. If you are South African fetch your best chefs and let them sample how a steak SHOULD be cooked, because previously I though you'd got it nailed, but this chef could school you all!
So my belly is full, what else does a Yorkshireman want.......good beer! Whisper this, but the Lancaster Brewery Golden Ale was terrific, they must have covered a Yorkshire label up!!
So onto the rooms, the owners clearly listen/read Tripadvisor and as such have addressed the problem of being permanently hot, however this has been addressed by what seems to be a centralised central heating system, so it was cold early evening. They forced me into the bar and to sit with a pint in front of a log fire!!! Shame!!!
The standard at breakfast was fantastic, given that we were the only guests they had still laid out a breakfast buffet for us and had cut no corners, and that is testimony to their consistent attention to their guests needs.
The staff were fantastic and could not have done any more for us if they tried, what was really nice was they appreciated we were having a relaxing break, recognised this and didn't fuss over us, but that wasn't that they didn't care, they clearly pay attention to their guests. Hopefully one thing more that will be addressed by the owners, whilst small in some ways could be disruptive in others and that is the locals who quite rightly see it as their local pub need to recognise that blocking the bar could seem intimidating to many, and tutting when people wish to get to the bar is not a great impression.
Try it for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Room 6 -loved it!

We stayed there on business in B&B and were pleasantly surprised with the value, quality of the rooms and especially the quality of the food. The staff were especially attentive to our every need even when the restaurant was busy. As we were residents we still wanted a drink after closing and this wasn't an issue. Great all round place for work or leisure!

Stayed in room 2 & found it to be very modern & clean. The bathrobes & towels were the fluffiest we have experienced anywhere! Breakfast was freshly cooked & delicious, & was served in the beautiful dining room. We had prebooked a table for dinner on the Saturday evening & were very impressed with the choice & quality of the food - the scallops were fantastic! The restaurant was very busy but the service was not affected at all. It was a little warm in the dining room but the staff opened a window & the back door to let a breeze in when i asked - they couldnt have done more for me. The staff are very friendly & we would definitely recommend both the restaurant & accommodation to others.

Let's start with the positives, the decor is modern without being cold and clinical, the towels are fluffy and the room (room 4 was our room), garden and restaurant are very pretty to look at. We had a warm welcome from the young man behind the bar and the owner.

Now for where they really need to improve, firstly the temperature. Our room was baking hot and the heater wasn't on. Yes we could open a window but our room faced onto the main road so that wasn't a pleasant option.

If you are taller than 5ft 7in I would not stay here the double beds are very small my 6ft 5in husbands feet hung off the bed so he spent most of the night with his knees raised which meant I nearly fell out of bed a few times. I did raise this at checkout but was wearily told that all there beds are this small size and that the new rooms would have kingsize. This will sound very moany but I do hope they don't charge a premium for these rooms as how is it fair to charge more for a bed people can fit on?

The restaurant at breakfast was far too hot, we mentioned this to the staff who said nothing could be done about this due to the old stone building retaining so much heat? The radiators were on, anyone with any common sense would turn them off surely? Open a window perhaps?

Breakfast was disappointing, one tiny sausage and more tomatoes and mushrooms than anything else. Having said that the sausage was clearly not a supermarket one and tasted good. We were so hot we decided not to bring it up we just wanted to wipe the sweat from our faces and go.

Give that we paid £90 for an enhanced double room I was disappointed, this place has loads of potential but it feels like more focus has been put on appearance than on the sleep quality for guests and the food. Were it to improve, I'd go back but I don't think my husband will.

The Craven Heifer has obviously undergone extensive refurbishment and is now an attractively presented modern restaurant with modern rooms and bathroms. I would not call it a pub in its present guise, more a restaurant with a bar (and accommodation) - but very smartly done. It is obviously very popular; we stayed on a Saturday night and the restaurant was very busy (though this did not affect the service, which was prompt and friendly). Booking ahead is definitely advisable.
Our taste is for somewhere more traditional and less "popular" but we couldn't fault the presentation or service.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back - it's on a busy road and if you want the window open (and it did see...

Fantastic service!
Beautiful and spacious room!
Close to Skipton for shopping and hills for walking.

The best things about this hotel are:
The food is imaginative, local and fresh
The wine is well reserched
All the staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the food they serve
The place has a family run feel to it.

There is nothing negative to say about this lovely hotel.

We are already booked in for Christmas eve/day.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are smaller and only have a shower so ring to ask about which rooms are available...
