“SUPERB FOOD, STUNNING VIEWS”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2013

I booked a tour group of 26 for a weekday 2 course lunch at The Annexe. Everything ran smoothly, from initial discussions with Geoff about the set menu, to the superb meal on the Terrace with stunning views. I look forward to my next visit. Highly recommended.

“Hidden gem in Kalk Bay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013

We had supper here on a Saturday night. Unless you go early around 6pm, you may need to book especially in the cooler months when everyone sit inside. There is however ample seating outside with an upper deck from where you have a relazing sea view. They do not have an extensive menu, but what is on offer has been well thought through and you will find something that you like. I had the crispy pork belly on wasabi mash with veggies. The pork and veggies was perfect, but I couldn't really taste any wasabi in the mash. My husband ordered the duck risotto and was first presented with mushroom risitto. The waiter took it away immediately and about 15 minutes later my husband got his duck risotto when I was almost finished with my food. There wasn't that much duck in it and the pieces very small, but also the whole dish on top was covered with drizzles of sweet sticky soy sauce which covered all taste of the risotto. My husband said everything tasted like soy sauce but as he was hungry and I was already done with supper, he just ate it.

“Excellent value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2013

This place really comes into its own on sunny days when you can sit outside & look at the busy harbour. It's also nice on a cold winter night to sit in the cosy library- like restaurant. The food is very reasonably priced & the Australian chef is very competent.

“High standards”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2013

There is a great little seating area up the steps on a raised piece of ground at the Annexe. From there one has an exquisite view of the harbour and surroundings. A perfect place to start one's day with a delicious breakfast.

On the morning we visited, it got a bit gusty so we moved down into the quaint courtyard on the lower level which enabled us to sit in peace out of reach of the wind and soak up some autumn rays.

Five stars for the food and the service. The waiter we had has been working at the Annexe for quite some time so knew the menu very well and thus aided us in our decisions about what to have. His service was impeccable.

Definitely worth another visit.

“Lovely food, good value and a great atmosphere.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2013

Situated in a quiet corner away from the bustle of the Kalk Bay main road, just behind the acclaimed Kalk Bay Books bookshop, The Annex offers indoor dining in the relaxed and cosy atmosphere of The Annex Library. On warm sunny days you can also enjoy a great view of the Kalk Bay harbour with its fleet of fishing boats from The Annex Terrace under the trees.

We enjoyed a midweek dinner in the Library and thoroughly enjoyed our food. Most popular was the Crispy Pork Belly with a sublime teriyaki sauce, served with wild wasabi mashed potatoes, sesame carrots and greens.

Running close favourites were the Karoo Lamb Chops with a minted Muscadel sauce, served with roasted vegetables and sautéed potatoes, and the Charcuterie Platter which consisted of Sanity Farm gourmet sausage, beef tartare, prosciutto, salami, cheddar cheese, gherkin and rocket, served with ciabatta.

The Annex has a diverse wine list and an interesting selection of craft beers.

The service was prompt and efficient, and although one of our orders was forgotten by the chef, he quickly recovered and had everyone served in minutes. You can watch the cooking team doing their thing through the glass-enclosed open kitchen right next to the restaurant.

For superb food, good value and a quaint and welcoming atmosphere, The Annex is hard to beat.

We didn’t book ahead but you can contact The Annex on +27 (0)21 788 2453, or just pop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They’re at 124 Main Road, Kalk Bay, Cape Town. Give yourself extra time if you’re driving there because the roadworks (scheduled until 2015!) slow down the traffic quite a bit.
