“Lovely guest house in a beautiful town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

The accommodation is well-kept. There are no frills but the owners do not pretend otherwise. They are very helpful and make you feel welcome. It was nice to be offered freshly brewed coffee each time we returned from our excursions. The position is excellent. We had a room overlooking the town and sea. Kalk Bay itself is a lovely town. There are plenty of good restaurants and interesting shops - all within 5 to 10 minutes walking distance.

I would recommend renting a car and exploring nearby towns. Muizenberg and particularly Simon's Town are well worth a visit. Car hire is very cheap but you will need to do it in Cape Town as none of the towns around Kalk Bay offer this service.

We only stayed in Kalk Bay for one night after a day travelling around the cape, and the Inn at Castle Hill was a lovely place to stay. Our room was huge and clean and it is situated in walking distance from all the restaurants etc in Kalk Bay. They do not offer breakfast (although it can be arranged at their sister guest house down the road) but this was not a problem at all as Kalk Bay has a range of nice places to choose from (we had breakfast at the Olympia Café and deli which was great).
It was exceptionally good value for money.

My husband and I wanted to book a room for 20 days in Cape Town and came across The Inn at Castle Hill. They offer two room options: superior standard rooms (with en-suite bathroom) or standard rooms (with privately allocated bathrooms situated "across the hallway" according to their own description).

We emailed the guesthouse and spoke to Madelein a few times and, based on the information received, decided to book one of the standard rooms. We told her we just needed to confirm our vacation first in order to send the required 50% deposit. The next day, when we booked our vacation at work, we sent her a message and she said she didn't have availability anymore to accommodate us for the first night and couldn’t keep us in the same room for the entire duration of our trip. We would have to find accommodation somewhere else for the first night (after a very long and tiring international trip), then stay for 4 nights in a room and move to another room for the remaining 15 nights. We told her that would be very tricky and she managed to “move” one of her guests to “another guesthouse” and accommodate us for the first night. We decided to book with them. Big mistake.

When we got there, we thought the place looked quite charming but as the days went by we started to notice the place was in need of some improvement. For instance, close to the lounge there is an area with some old books and it smells moldy (same smell of the closets and drawers). Also, most rooms have access to a common veranda so privacy is an issue, as well as people smoking in front of your door. And everyday they’ll clean the room and leave the curtains wide open. Yet, the room was quite spacious and we had an en-suite bathroom with a shower (Humpback Whale Room).

Then we moved to one of the standard rooms and got the Southern Right Whale Room. The first thing I noticed is that the closet only had one key to two doors and you need to lock them in order to get the doors to be closed, otherwise they remain open. This is an issue because the room is considerably small. There is also too much furniture in the room, chair and armchair occupy a space that is much needed in this room (it’s cramped).

Then we discovered that the bathroom "across the hallway” was actually very inconveniently on the opposite end of the house and it needs urgent refurbishment: there is a bathtub with a handheld shower that splashes everywhere, a window that can’t be opened because it’s full of leaves accumulated on the outside and a small skylight with crawling insects (that kept falling into the bathtub). It’s also uncomfortable to get back from a shower and find the hallway door open with a cold “breeze” coming from outside and people passing by.

We were frustrated but decided to give it a try. At night, when we went to bed we noticed the double bed (that we requested and that they confirmed they had prior to our arrival) was actually two beds put together! They are even cheeky enough to use a cover that imitates a mattress, so people won’t see it! After that night we asked to be moved to another room and discovered that some other rooms are the same way and that not all the bathrooms have showers, so make sure you ask beforehand.

We also had other issues with the place, for instance, they are nice enough to provide water bottles to put on the beds when it’s cold, but some nights they run out. Also, one day one of our bottles broke and wet the bed and at night there was nobody in the office to help us change our sheets. We had to improvise and dry them with a hairdryer and put some towels over it. That day we noticed one of the sheets and one pillow case were dirty.

One night we got back and found our bathroom window was left wide open and the house next door is in construction so beware of noise and your belongings. For the price and a guesthouse with no television in the rooms and that asks for 50% in advance, we expected way more. The staff is nice but I don’t think we’ll be coming back.

Room Tip: Do not choose the Southern Right Whale Room as the bathroom is far from the room.

We were only able to stay at CastleHill for one night but they re very friendly. They were flexible about our arrival time, and happily put an extra begin our room for our son. Very comfortable beds!
The house is beautifully appointed with a lovely view from the upstairs balcony.
Staff were also helpful with suggestions for eating out. All in all, a good place to stay.

This was our second stay at Inn at Castle Hill and not our last! Love the olde worlde feel of the the place. Staff very friendly and helpful. Excellent location!
Loved the small touches like finding a "hot cooler box" at the bottom of the stairs, filled with hot water bottles. Just the thing coming in from a cold winter's
evening out. Will recommend to all our friends and family.

Beautiful old home, a real feel of Cape village life and view of the harbour. Great restaurants to walk to with treasure trove of shops. Quiet and peaceful accomodation. Loved the personal touch of hot water bottles waiting for us and snuggly blankets along the verandah chairs as the winter chilly nights set in.
