“Average food but worth a visit for the location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2014

I plumped for the battered hake and calamari combo. The calamari was fine, cooked just right, and not at all chewy. The hake was encased in a tough batter, and the fish lacked any texture or flavour underneath. I can't believe they would use frozen fish this close to such a well known fish market, but either that or it was simply cooked too long. My colleague had 6 large prawns and also complained they were over cooked - and crumbled when he tried to eat them. The beer was good and the service just ok.
However, the location was simply amazing - jutting out into the ocean with waves crashing down either side and some bigger ones breaking out front. Atmospheric and enchanting and made the visit worthwhile. I would certainly go back and hope that i got luckier with the chef or my choice of food.

“Right on the Bay!”

Great location and cold beer. A wonderful place for drinks in the late afternoon/early evening. We also enjoyed a good meal here.

“Must Visit for the experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2014

Found this place by chance when walking under the subway on the Quay. A great find too. Wonderful atmosphere....clearly a local favourite. The restaurant is surrounded by the sea, and when the tide and surf is coming in, watch out you are not sitting by the windows....cos your gonna get wet. Food and service were great. A must visit

“Place could do with a refurb to match its location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2014

Although the food was reasonably good and the location wonderful, they are taking the eccentricity too far. The whole restaurant could do with a refurb and a clean. I do not mean an upmarket makeover just simple freshening up. It looks like it will end up in the sea in the next big storm.

“Better kept a secret”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2014

My family and I went for lunch at The Brass Bell. According to the popularity of the restaurant, and the reputation, my family thought this to be a great place to go for lunch. What a massive mistake.

Since the last time we dined at this restaurant there has been a massive and positive change to the restaurant layout. It really looked beautiful and there was a wonderful atmosphere. First impressions are important, but sadly this is where the restaurant gained its 2/5 rating.

The menu is as eclectic as Kalk Bay itself. A mishmash of items all put together, with no identity. It seems that they want to provide something for everybody, sometimes in the same dish....

Do not order the starters, and the seafood platter was not well prepared. The seafood was terribly dry and seemed to be prepared with no care in the world. I would like to try the restaurant when it is not as busy to see whether there would be a difference, but the lack of interest showed to my family and the rest of the patrons by the management who one does not see at all after the seating procedure does not instill much confidence in me.

It would be nice for managers to enquire as to the enjoyment of their customers meals. Come to think of it, it would be nice for the waitron to enquire as to their tables satisfaction as well.

I would not take my ex-girlfriend to this restaurant, so I basically am saying that I would never go back....
