Description: This traditional village pub dates back to the 15th century with our snug area dating back to 1107! Legend has it, that the original building was used as accommodation for the monks that built Iden church. We have two delightful letting rooms, separate to the pub. Rooms offer king sized beds and en-suite facilities. Other features include original oak beams within the letting rooms and the main inn. Make yourselves tea and coffee in vintage china in the morning in bed whilst watching television with freeview prior to popping over the the restaurant for a sumptuous hearty breakfast using fresh local produce - continental and full English are offered. We are proud of our home cooked food and offer far more than your usual pub grub. Our food is locally sourced where possible and reflects seasonal changes. We are a perfect dining space for a romantic dinner for two, a family celebration or a private party.

We came here for Easter Sunday lunch and weren't disappointed. Although we weren't local, we were made very welcome and the owners and staff provided very attentive service and the excellent wide and varied menu has something to tempt every palate. We stayed far longer than we planned, but this was no problem for the hard-working young team that run this treasure in the East Sussex countryside. We are already looking for an excuse to go back as soon as possible and no doubt we'll find one.

Four of us visited The Bell for a birthday celebration that coincided with Mothers Day and so found ourselves having Sunday lunch on one of the busiest days of the year surrounded by happy customers of all ages. How the three staff managed to keep so many people satisfied without appearing to be under any pressure was a tribute to their energy and enthusiasm - a master class in good service that was a treat to see. It was also nice to see Mum showing the next generation of publicans how to pull a pint properly, well done Lindsey!
As for the food, the roast lamb was excellent and the bread & butter pudding was divine. And Doom Bar on draught! And champagne by the glass!!
I just wish that this super pub with its friendly locals was my local pub so that I could show my appreciation on a regular basis.

A friendly welcome and a warm fire – both good signs when you walk in to an inn on a cold evening! There was a 'buzzy' atmosphere in the bar, too, from prospective diners and people who were simply enjoying a pint together. Sitting in easy chairs by the wood stove, as we ordered our food, we could see the restaurant beyond, which is attractively furnished in simple style with a stripped pine floor and light furniture. A range of 8 or 9 main courses varied in price from about £9, to £16 for the steak option, but The Bell do a number of special offers at different times. On this occasion two main meals were offered for the price of one – excellent value! It was good to be served a ‘proper’ steak and ale pie, not just a bowl of meat with a pastry hat, and the ‘honeyed pork‘, was very tasty.

We were a little disappointed that no one came to ask, whether everything was all right, until the plates were cleared away, and even then, we were not offered the dessert menu. True, there was only one person looking after bar and restaurant, but it was not busy. However, the service generally was polite and appropriately friendly, so perhaps this was just an oversight.

Things at The Bell have been a little uncertain over the last few years, but hopefully they are now ‘on track’, and we shall certainly visit ‘our local’ again to make sure!

We were recommended by our hosts at the Iden Coach House, just a short walk up the road. We were first struck by the lovely welcome from the other customers - we're just not used to that where we live!
The menu offers a good variety of simple dishes, we chose duck and pork belly, with a bottle of Malbec. Both dishes arrived fairly promptly, and both were clearly freshly- and well-cooked. At the other tables were mostly local folk, always a good sign!
We enjoyed our meal and bottle of wine, and walked back to our B&B well-satisfied.

Dear BOOTling
Thank you for such a lovely review of The Bell. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your experience with us and we hope to welcome you back if you pop down this way again. The pork belly is an extremely popular dish and we get many compliments about the crackling! John is very proud of his wine list and also enjoys a glass of Malbec, so a good choice!
