“Country Break May 2009.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2009

The Bell Inn is a lovely country pub full of charm. The joint proprietor Amy is very hard working and cannot do enough to help customers. The accommodation is first class in a converted stable 25 yards from the actual pub. The rooms are of a very high standard, immaculate, spotlessly clean and full of all mod con's and even safes in each room. The 'locals' make you feel most welcome in their pub, which is nice. This pub is ideally located for visiting Rye, Rye Harbour, Bodiam Castle, Peasmarsh, Battle Abby, Tenterdon, Appledon, Camber & Hastings. There is a very friendly dog called Dexter, who is no problem whats-so-ever and ample free parking. The village of Iden has a wonderful Norman church & a quaint village shop. (that's about all really). The only adverse comment I have is that the breakfast was rather sparse, to say the least. However my wife and I would love to stay at the Bell again and would definately recommend friends to do so. This is a really great 'B & B'.

We found The Bell at Iden to be a very friendly country pub with very good B&B facilities. These consisted of a coverted barn in the pub grounds. The pub grub was of a very high standard.
Within a couple of miles from Rye this made a great base to explore this quaint town.
We will certainly stay there again when we are next in the area.

We visited this delightful country pub, and found it to be truly fabulous. The food, the fire the drink and most of all the people.
If you want somewhere off the beaten path then this place is a must, The rooms are quaint and stylish (if thats possibe), spotlessly clean and welcoming. The staff were extremely welcoming and made sure that our every need was taken into account.

Will definately be back.

If you want 5 star service at a reasonable price please detour several miles to stay at the Bell. My stay was brief but you can be sure this is not my last visit and I have already placed this on my business newsletter list for my clients who would be rather foolish not to check out the hospitality and -------------- well just enjoy and relax.

We stayed for one night and wished we could have stayed longer - lovely and clean - new heaters in rooms, bathrooms spotless. We were made so welcome, had a super meal, all freshly made and we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing beside the log burner sitting on the comfy leather chairs. Hospitality, friendliness excellent - we will be back!

Thanks again.

My husband and I recently stayed at The Bell, needing accommodation for one night before crossing to Europe. I was looking for a B&B with reasonable prices situated close to Dover.
Having visited the town before, and enjoying it, Rye seemed a likely option. I chose The Bell based upon the reviews offered on this website. It seemed like good value for money, a great location, and a pub that provided good grub.

First off, I must say that I admire Darren and Amy, who are young and maintaining a business that's dependent on the whims of people's disposable income. They have enthusiasm, creativity, and talent.

Unfortunately, I must disagree with the two previous reviewers.

Though we received a friendly welcome, I must admit that the care given to the room itself was lacking.
To whit:
The bathroom was, at best, kinda grotty. Everything, from the sink to the shower, to the toilet needed a good scrub. Additionally, the tracked-in dirt on the bathroom floor didn't help matters.
Another example of lack of attention to detail: the bedside lamps needed dusting. This was very obvious because the lamps were the touch-the-base-to-illuminate type. One could easily see the clean area where most people had hit the lamp base. The rest was dusty.
The room had no central heating and the electric radiators were old and not particularly robust. Because the bed was covered with a thick duvet and we are used to cold rooms, that wasn't a huge issue. However, it should be taken into consideration when booking in colder months.
Last, the power shower, while adequately heating the water, had no pressure option. Thus, even people with shorter hair would have a problem getting shampoo out of thier locks.

I truly regret writing this review because The Bell could be a really great B&B - provided a bit of attention to detail was maintained.
The proprietors are young, enthusiastic, and trying hard. I hate like heck to be the cause of decreased business - especially in these tough economic times - but, unfortunately, sometimes a mediocre review can affect positive change.

The reviewer has submitted an honest and accurate report. as at the time of their stay.

I am pleased to report that we have just completed a refurbishment of the bathrooms in both rooms. (10 Nov 2008)They are now all nice and shinny. We shall be adding photos to our web site soon.
As to the heating, we have found that guests 'play with the controls' and in some cases turn the heating off, it is our fault for not checking the control prior to this guests arrival, but if it had been mentioned at the time, we could have very quickly rectified the problem. I am also pleased to report that new heating is to be installed next week and also that it is automatic, and this should stop the need for guests to play with the controls.

I thank the reviewer for their positive comments regarding Darren and Amy, who manage the Bell at Iden, with our experience behind them. We have only been owners of The Bell for a few months, and have now refurbished these rooms after years of neglect.
