“Remote and beautiful - everything a vacay should be”
Reviewed March 14, 2011

A dive travel agent recommended this place. After not being able to find much online, I thought I'd split my time between their sister resort, Barra Resorts in Inhambane (since I found more on Barra) and Pomene.

I wish I stayed at Pomene the whole time.

Pomene is a beautiful, remote resort with water cottages on stilts overlooking the estuary. There's lots of water activities (diving, fishing, etc.) and non-water activities (quad biking, horse back riding, etc). When I say it's remote, it's REALLY remote - it's about 2.5 hours away from the Tofo airport, 1+ hour on a very rough dirt road. And it runs on a generator a few hours a day (including at night, so no fans work). That being said, bring a lot of books, and light clothing to sleep in because the mozzies (mosquitoes) can be vicious.

The cook (Jason) / menu are fanastic. Some of the guys staying caught so much fish we even ate some of their fresh catch!

Being a young female traveling alone from the states, I felt totally fine too. The staff was super hospitable, accommodating and wanted to make sure you enjoyed. Highly recommend!

This beautiful place is remote, about 4hrs from nearest airport in inhambane. As well as self catering chalets there are lovely, spacious ensuite chalets built on stilts over the estuary. The lodge is on the end point between the river mouth and the sea. It is beautiful, with an amazing, long, white sandy beach. There is a pretty infinity pool and the food is exceptional. There is a choice between two main courses and the seafood is simple, fresh and great. A really great, low key but quality place.

If you're not a fully equipped and convinced Camper you should book nothing else than the Waterchalets. They are pretty nice and overlook the river but all other accommodation types are very very basic, not closed why the linen and towels smell frowsty.
The bay itself is gorgeous!!! Not easy to reach (40 km 4x4 road) but therefore very lonely! You'll enjoy it most if you like fishing and/or diving. The hotel offers other activities as well (quad-biking, hiking...). It's so remote you don't have any network connection. The only possibilty to make a call is one spot in the bar were they have a special antenna.

But please don't forget to bring your coolers for having a Braai in the evening! You can buy nothing within 50 km and the restaurant is one of the poorest I've ever been to.
I would recommend the hotel only because of it's fishing/diving opportunities and the extraordinary remote location - the accommodation & food can not be recommended.
