We went to Hideout on a long weekend to get away from the urban mayhem called Mumbai. The drive to Hideout was beautiful once we passed the Dahisar tolls, especially the small country roads off the national highway.

We were put up in the Eco room. The room was charming. Mud walls and earth floors constructed in a way to convey a sense of open dwelling while still retaining privacy. A macchardani (mosquito net) to keep mosquitos away the traditional way. But be warned: This rooms are comfortable but basic. This is not your standard B&B. No TV or ACs. Just fresh air and fans. There are power cuts daily, but there are rooms with backup power where one can relax if it gets too hot.

Everything about Hideout is open, earthy and airy. The common sitting area, the dining tables, and the kitchen are all in a thatched courtyard that is open on all sides. There are no granite or marble floors. All walking is on earth floors. While there are many activities in the adjoining countryside, Hideout is geared towards the three Rs – reconnect, rest, rejuvenate. There are rocking chairs, swing sofas, hammocks; all perfect to lie about and lazily read one of the many interesting books available in the mini library. Friendly adopted dogs and cats will keep you company if you like. Or you could snooze in the silence of the afternoons.

At night the silence goes away. It's pitch black. The sound of crickets and frogs fill the air. It's a welcome change from the sounds of autos and buses. Sleep comes easily, like stepping back into an old familiar land.

The meals were simple, healthy and delicious. From time to time, we got fresh numbu pani, green tea, and some very effective lemon-ginger shots to boost immunity.

What made Hideout truly exceptional was the hospitality of Hemant, Sangeeta, and Hemant’s mother. Hemant shared with us tips on healthy living and eating, culled from his own experiences and his learning from various teachers and workshops. The meals, the little excursions, the health tips, the attention given to the food – all of these bore the signature of proprietors who made the extra effort to provide guests with a uniquely enjoyable experience.

Hideout is not a luxury nature retreat or farmhouse. It’s not a place to party or soak in luxurious linen and baths. If you’re looking for a place to reconnect back with the earth; to eat simple and healthy; to hear crickets and birds by your bedside; to feel rejuvenated in mind, body, and spirit; Hideout is the place for you.

Hide Out turned out to be the sort of surprise I wish I could chance upon more often in life. Perfect, wholesome food, the bluest skies and greenest forests, and the most gracious hosts ever. Do go there if you want to recharge with unmanicured natural beauty and soul food served with love. So glad we did.

Drive: It was good with precise guidelines from the host. The eastern express highway route is more scenic is what we hear.

Stay: The cottages are VERY basic with power cuts through most of the day, there is no TV and AC. Its too dark inside the rooms for us to enjoy the stay. Its not a resort, so if your idea is to enjoy the room, this is not the place.

Food: This was the worst part. It was organic all right, but it was not tasty at all as what we had read in the reviews, was close to being boiled with bare minimum salt. The spread is very limited. We are not comfortable with pet dogs and cats in the kitchen and dining area.

Activities: The place is not ideal for couples who want to spend alone time but for those who like to make conversations with fellow visitors when you are around. You will be completely dependent on the host and the fellow visitors for your visit to nearby waterfalls and damns. The natural beauty is good but not exotic.

Farms: We did not find much of a farm, there was basic plantations in place as such and worth only if you like to educate yourself about plants and types etc. Nothing too exotic there either.

Go here only if you are not too interested in enjoying food on your vacation, you are interested in striking conversations and like group activities and very very raw beauty of nature.

We visited hideout as family last week, and the experience was truly enriching. Its rare to find the warmth, personal touch and family setting like you get at Hideout. The experience is like visiting a friend at his farmhouse- no frills, simple food, excellent hospitality and tons of warmth. The farm takes you closer to the nature and the host never hesitates in sharing his learnings, experiences and secrets! Amazingly open people and open space. Ideal to take your kids and expose them to life at the farm and also the rural life in the nearby areas. Hemant is always more than willing to walk that extra mile for a better learning experience...
