Decided to take the early train from Grindelwald, to try & beat the crowds as it is quite a long trip to get there....which didn't work....ended up standing for 90% of the train trip, which can be a bit of a pain when you're at a 45degree angle..& don't really appreciate all the views on the way up.
Once there the views are stunning, really....but, & this is quite a big 'but' you cannot fully appreciate this place, due to the sheer number of people that are here,...you are pushed, bumped into by many 'groups' & have to go with the flow if you have any chance of seeing this place in all its glory. Reminds me of a visit to Ikea on a busy day.
The Ice sculptures are fine, but had to look at the signs to make out what I was looking at, & you have to queue to have your photo taken at the POI spots.
The resturants were mostly taken over by groups, so it didn't leave enough space for us regular tourists to eat.
Not trying to be negative here, I know it's a 'must see/do' thing, but I won't be going back as the number of people here spolit what should have been a unique experience..& it is expensive(the trip & food)
If you have booked your train tickets with times for departure, make sure you are in the train queue at your allotted time or you will either be refused to board or be given a fine if you are on the wrong train.
On a positive note I actually got a seat on the return train, so did see the scenery going back..

Amazing experience going up from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch with the train. The view is amazing and really worth the tour. Even just for snow and 4 degrees in August!

The train trip up from Grindlewald was spectacular. The views simply breathtaking. Then you're on top of the European continent. WOW. I's not as cold as I thought, global warming? yes, there is snow and ice, but it was warm with the sunshine.

I have been looking forward to this ever since booking our accommodations in Interlaken although I knew it was weather-dependent. In the last week I was reading the most recent reviews and was a bit disappointed to see some more negative ones talking about how crowded it has been getting at the top at peak times. We read a bit further and it looked like going early was the way to go, and the weather looked pretty certain to be good today so we bit the bullet, bought tickets and seat reservations and set off from Interlaken West before 7:30am (we were on the train that left Kleine Scheidegg at just after 9am and returned from Jungfraujoch to KS at 12:13pm).
We all loved it. First of all, yes, the Sphinx platform was a bit crowded, even early. It snowed yesterday so half of the platform was closed. However, the big tour groups don't seem to go out to the snow play area/ walk to the hut. You don't have to walk all of the way to the hut to get out away from people. As far as the restrooms go, since the trains arrive every half an hour, try to either get in front of the big tour groups and use the bathroom right away, or else lag behind them before the next train arrives. There's a bathroom at the Kleine Scheidegg station as well so if you have seat reservations you'll have time to use it there before transferring (I think.. not sure if that's true for every arrival).
We took a small snack and water bottles and then had lunch down in Kleine Scheidegg. BTW there's another restaurant there besides the crowded one at the train station and the expensive one in the Bellevue hotel.... go over the train tracks and up toward the cute cows.
