“Enjoyable Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2013

My wife and i stayed at the Fronoleu as many others have commented on a KGB deal for 2 nights on the 12th and 13th of September.
As many of the other travellers have also commented the hotel would benefit from a little updating as the decor was "well worn" but this detracted very little from what was a very enjoyable stay and was of a cosmetic nature only.
We were apprehensive from some of the other trip advisor comments but had no need to worry. The place is quirky but we found everything clean, tidy and comfortable.
We visited the area to walk Cadir Idris which was on the hotels doorstep so it provided exactly what we needed.
The food was excellent - the first night was part of the purchased deal but we also eat there on our second night, i think this speaks for itself in what we thought of the meal. Portions were large ( but you dont have to eat it all ) and service was slower than expected but only because everything was cooked from scratch and fresh. If you want fast mass prepared food go elsewhere - but why would you settle for that???
All in all good value for money, cheerful and helpful staff
We have already booked to return in the new year

Having selected The Fronoleu Country Hotel as a two night KGB Deal my wife and I decided to adopt an 'open mind' owing to the mixed Trip Advisor Reviews, particularly as there were a number of comments about the quality of the food. We arrived early evening on a sunny Thursday after spending a delightful afternoon at Powis Castle.
We were greeted by the owner and was shown to our room on the first floor. Our twin room was clean and the bedding and towels were spotless. However, we were somewhat overwhelmed by three pillows each, sheets, blankets, a 'duvet' and an overlay, much of which we had to dispense with at bedtime (a simple duvet would have been perfectly adequate). The bathroom was also clean but had obviously not seen any refurbishment since the 1960/70's.
After unpacking and freshening up we went down to the bar, ordered a drink and made our evening meal selection from the extensive menu. As the pork was not available we both selected the sirloin steak and asked to see the wine list. The delightful young lady behind the bar remarked that they did not have a list but that we could choose between red, rose or white! Fortunately, the white was a Sauvignon Blanc (our white wine of choice).
We took a seat in the lounge but were careful to select one of the two leather sofas as the remainder were old, shabby and appeared rather grubby. Additionally, one of the sofas was occupied by a large recumbent dog snoring happily and who was joined shortly afterwards by another dog who also had a 'sofa bed'. There were just two other guests in the lounge and we only noticed four in the dining room.
We had ordered pork parfait with berries for our starter and, whilst this was well presented and quite tasty, we waited over 50 minutes to be called to our table! Our wine arrived, but unfortunately this had not been chilled. The main course had to be seen to be believed - we both had two large, thick steaks served on a tomato mash with a side salad (this would have been perfectly ample as part of a three course meal). We were then presented with a 'large platter' containing six other vegetables, shortly followed by a generous bowl of chips and new potatoes. We were so overwhelmed by the vast quantities of food that this actually 'put us off' our meal. Needless to say, well over half 'went back to the kitchen'! I would conservatively estimate that there were enough accompaniments for at least four people. Our pudding (thankfully), was a fairly light pavlova.
The following morning we spoke with one or two of the other guests at breakfast (there appeared to be less that a dozen people staying at the hotel), and a couple remarked upon the quantities, and consequently waste, of food. Our cooked breakfasts arrived on gargantuan plates and was accompanied by a total of 16 half slices of toast!
We had a wonderfully sunny Friday and decided to give the dining room another chance to avoid driving anywhere. Once again we had a pre-dinner drink and ordered our meal. On this occasion we did have the pork (which came with chips) and, to avoid a repeat of the previous evening I stated that we did not want the selection of vegetable but would like a small portion of cauliflower and peas.
Fortunately, our starter was a little more prompt in arriving (if a little disappointing in taste), but this was followed by two 'slabs' of pork each (in a rather weird sauce) together with the vegetables we requested. However, this was then joined by a generous portion of chips and FOURTEEN new potatoes (yes, I did count them (I must be that sad), and actually ate one)! Our wine was slightly chilled on this occasion.
On our final morning my wife simply had boiled eggs and I had eggs on toast (we were unable to finish the 'mountain peaks' of toast that appeared on the rack!
I have discovered that the hotel appears to be struggling financially and would suggest that the owner reviews, and radically revises, the amount of food waste. Upon paying my additional food and bar bill I discovered also that I had not been charged for one of the bottles of wine. Had this been a somewhat 'more stable establishment' I might simply have said 'their loss' but had to advise the owner accordingly. It concerned me that similar errors would only exacerbate their precarious financial position.
There is a well known adage "always finish on a positive" and on this occasion it has to be the staff! Whist the owner appeared 'pleasantly eccentric' the other staff that we encountered were, without exception, polite, friendly and attentive (without being overbearing).
I have headed this rather lengthy review 'Quantity over Quality' and this reflects our views on the food. No doubt there are those who would revel in the mountains that appear at the table but this is simply not us - but as we always say 'It is all a matter of personal taste' and I hope that reviewers will take this into account before deciding against the Fronoleu Country Hotel.
In conclusion, the Hotel is well placed to visit the area and has the potential to be a delightful country retreat (although I would anticipate the need to invest at least £100K to bring it to a more viable position). If anyone has the phone number of Ruth Watson or Alex Polizzi (The Hotel Inspectors) then this may be the saving of The Fronoleu!!

We booked through KGB deal and were open minded that this place was not going to be swanky but we at least expected a minimum standard that this place fell short of in all departments. On arrival the owner greeted us in her dirty clothes followed closely by her dog which followed her throughout the hotel. Therefore the whole place smells of dirty dogs including the room we were shown to. All communal areas are filthy with the need of renewing, our room was unhoovered, hairs in the bed wallpaper hanging off wall, We did not eat here as we left to find alternative accomodation but i passed through the dining and bar area and both were dirty and not a place i would care to eat or drink in . Do yourself a favour and steer clear of this sess pit of a hotel. Remember if you do take the risk you have been warned!

Room Tip: Do not book this place in the first place if you want an acceptable room let alone a good one

We stayed here in August on a KGB deal (3 nights, breakfast each morning, 3 course meal and a bottle wine on first night of stay for £129) and it was one of the best mini breaks we have had. We were greeted on arrival by Maggie the owner who showed us to our room. Having read the reviews on here we were expecting the decor of our room to need a little updating but we both thought it was lovely as it is traditional and old fashioned, if you want to stay in a modern looking hotel you can choose from thousands, this one has it's own feel to it and is so different to your run of the mill hotel.
The service from all the staff was outstanding, they are all very friendly and make you feel at home. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they seemed happy to be working there.
The food was amazing! Huge portions of high quality food. Everything we ordered over the 3 days was delicious. The food can take a little longer to arrive but it was always worth it as you can tell it was all homemade and fresh. Would recommend going for a long walk during the day to enable you to finish the entire meal!
We will definitely be returning to Fronoleu hotel not only for the excellent service but also for the great location to explore Snowdonia. The hotel is also dog friendly which is important to us as we don't like leaving her at home!

Having read all the reviews before we went along on our KGB trip, I wholeheartedly agree with most of the other reviewers, so instead of focusing on the bad things- and let's face it, it's only the decor, so let's focus on the GREAT things! FOOD, WELCOME, and GOOD FUN! The other guests were like-minded dog-owners, so we were all amused at the quirkiness of the hotel. Maggie is lovely and seems to do all the food prep and cooking herself, and whilst there's no finesse in either portions or presentation, both the breakfast and evening dinner were enormous- the steak was hanging off the plate like half a cow! It is sad that the hotel was probably once very popular and splendid in it's day, which was probably about 15 years ago, and without a big chain or company coming to the rescue, it looks unlikely to live on. Maggie deserves full recognition for her efforts- she must be exhausted! We had the most delightful sleep in the saggy four poster and the fluffy white towels were a surprising bonus. All in all, we had a fine time and are considering a reunion with our fellow guests!

Stayed here on a kgb deal, 3 nights bed, breakfast. Included 3 course meal and bottle of wine on first night for £129 per couple.
Yes, it is dated, but clean, amazing towels ( would love to know her secret, smelt fresh, clean and so. So soft)
We had four poster bed, which had clearly slept many before us, other reviews mentioned this was clearly once a beautiful, vibrant hotel. Sadly it is in need of a renovation and tlc to bring it back into its own.
The food is a conversation on its own, never in my life have I seen a steak of this size! ! Neither have I been served it upon potatoes, to then be given a side order of chips and more potatoes, alongside a huge vegetable selection.
The breakfast came on the biggest plate I ever seen, reviews about not leaving hungry is understated, roll me out more like
What a wonderful, lovely lady who runs this place, she obviously knows her stuff, she was polite and friendly,
Spoke to couple who was staying, who had visited the hotel three times over the 19 years, they spoke fondly of how it had been in the 90`s, it was obviously a fantastic place to stay then
I just wish I had the know how and investment needed to bring it up to date, it's a gold mine. I do think one day I will return and it will have been purchased by a chain and used as a venue for wedding or function's
If you like functional, maybe a bed to lay your head and are not looking for anything more than that then go, it was a bargain!
