“A glorious week in Wales”
Reviewed July 1, 2014

We stayed at this gracious, welcoming, comfortable countryside lodge while enjoying a weeklong discovery walk with HF Holidays. We enjoyed everything about our stay. The staff was friendly and helpful, the food was wonderful with choices for everyone (including wonderful vegetarian and gluten free options for all courses), the atmosphere was relaxed and inclusive, and there were enjoyable evening activities. The site is beautiful and scenic, and the manager Lou can solve any problem. We felt like guests at a country house party. The chef deserves special praise for the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, local foods, and stunning desserts. It was so easy to meet the other guests at meals and in the bar, and we felt we had made friends with everyone by week's end. Would love to return!

Plas Dolserau ( Dolserau Hall Hotel )

Plas Dolserau was built in 1860 and has many original features. This Victorian country house hotel is located within Snowdonia National Park. From our bedroom we overlooked its own quiet grounds and scenic hills. There are views of Cadair Idris located just 2 miles away from its foot.

Yes, spectacular countryside and gardens surround this traditional Victorian building, combining nature and serenity, interrupted only, by the chirping of wild life and the conversations between lambs bleating for sustenance from their Mam’s. This quintessential Welsh rural location is central to numerous places of interest and natural beauty.

We travelled from our home in the heart of England heading towards Dolgellau and onto Plas Dolserau. On our journey we encountered heavy rain, stoically comforting ourselves, by stating, “ its only rain”. Our laissez-faire attitude was rewarded, because, as we crossed the English border, and approached Dolgellau, the downpour petered out, the grey clouds ebbed, and welcome shafts of blue sky increasingly emerged with long glimpses of bright sunlight that dared to peer between the prominent Snowdonia crags, embellishing the luminous shades of green and natural flora. It was indeed quite magical; like a impetuous child, I couldn’t wait to try and capture this force of nature with my camera lens. Imagine if you will, “the light waves of mystical mist spiraling upwards like smoke rising from warm embers of a campfire, gradually dissipating above the hillsides to form cold 'lakes' of air”.

On our port side glancing down the vale stood an imposing building framed by breathtaking scenery. Amidst the undulating meadows, stood Plas Dolserau, we stopped to take in the view and raised a smile as a young foal, reminiscent of ‘Bambi on ice’ awkwardly frolicked amongst the buttercups.

We were cordially greeted at Plas Dolserau reception; a lift to the first floor was welcomed, and the traditionally designed room suited our needs perfectly. Our evening meal and full Welsh breakfast was delicious. Overall, the experience was positive and according to conversations we had with regular visitors to Plas Dolserau, we were not on our own in appreciating this venue. My wife and I shall certainly be considering revisiting Plas Dolserau. I hope you enjoy a sample of my photographs taken during our stay.

Cheers; Diolch yn fawr....iechyd da .......Paul R

My mum and I just got back from a lovely 2night stay in Dolsareau Hall. Lou, that runs the hotel, could not do enough to help us. The food was superb! We had a 3 course meal in the restraurant and each course was just delicious. What a great Chef! Breakfast was also fantastic! So much choice of fruit, and fry-up was very very tasty! We stayed in the annex that was just down the road from the main building-it was spotless and had obviously just been re-decorated.It is a beautiful hotel and the surroundings are
peaceful and so pretty. Can't wait to return to this hotel over the summer!

Having spoken to other guests who have stayed at Dolserau Hall in the past, the take-over of this hotel by HF Walking Holidays has not done this hotel very much good. Indeed the description "hotel" might better replaced with the word "hostel". The new owners have allowed standards to slip quite markedly, so we were led to believe by two couples who had frequently stayed at the hotel in the past. The restaurant operates a very limited choice Table d'Hote menu that did change but guests were pressurised to select their evening meal choice immediately after breakfast - a bit like old style school dinners, and God forbid that you might want chips/ French fries rather than the advertised rosti - if so you are likely to get told off by the staff for making such a bold request. Guests are allocated their own dining table if staying more than one night, so make sure you don't spill anything on the first night, as the stain will stay with you for the rest of your sojourn - I didn't realise there was a worldwide table linen shortage - or maybe an example of a new owner corner cutting measure. Even petals that fall from the flowers in table displays were left to decompose on the floor - perhaps HF's attempt at being eco-friendly? It has to be said, in favour of the chef that the quality of the food is good, especially the very impressive full Welsh (or English or Scottish) breakfast - it is simply the environs in which the chef's food is served that could be tweaked.
If staying in the main part of the hostel/ hotel be sure to ask for a room that does not have a door on to the fire escape as such rooms have bright green lights to show you where the fire escape is, but the light is so bright that sleeping is close to impossible unless you have an apartment in Time Square, New York without blinds or curtains. Maintenance workers at the hostel/ hotel tend to do their work and not clean up after them, so it is quite possible you might have to hive with a filthy carpet for a day or two if the owners decide that work needs to be carried out in your room and the owners do not even have the courtesy to inform guests that maintenance work is to be carried out, so you might want to take special care of valuables since you cannot tell who might wander into your room without prior notification.

Room Tip: All rooms have stunning views but avoid those that lead on to the fire escape.

Stayed as part of an HF walking holiday for 5 nights. I had high expectations, having read previous reviews. These were met fully. The bedroom was large, plenty of storage, nice views, superb bathroom with separate bath and shower cubicle, and very clean. The staff here are so helpful and friendly and any minor issues were dealt with promptly (my only one was a faulty bath tap, which was fixed quickly). After a day of walking one can return with muddy boots, shed the walking gear in the cosy boot room and relax in a very comfortable hotel and be looked after very well by the staff. The food here is top notch. Very good breakfasts and the evening meals are, in my view, of the standard I would expect from a 4 or 5 star hotel. Superb!

Room Tip: Room 4 is very large and has a nice bathroom. Quiet too.

My second visit here as an HF Holidays guest [first was July 2012]

Once more accommodation was good - large room with masses of storage, and the food as always was superb. Only slight niggle would be the Wifi, which this time was a bit "in and out".

I would add my usual proviso for those using the place who aren't part of an HF holiday - you will be seriously outnumbered by walkers, but that said you will be well looked after.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main house are more convenient for meals etc

The Hotel is in a lovely location if you want rural, but not with in walking distance from any shops or restaurant.
Unfortunately we felt that the hotel cater manly for hikers, as there was a load of detail of different hiking trails but nothing of the local sight seeing or heritage sites. Or even what to do while in snowdonia.
Dinner would cost you for just the main meal at least £18.00 per head.
Breakfast was amazing !
We got a room separate from the main building but it was lovely and quiet, and very spacious. Newly decorated. It was clean, but the management need to check up on cleaners, quite a lot of dust on furniture, and when we asked for the room to be made the next day, they only pulled the duvet, not even straight. No replacement of the shower gel. Had to phone for the replacement.
