Stopped for lunch. Smart exterior, and smarter inside. Nice stone and white walls, modern furniture. Bar area warm and with TV but low level.
Had soup, salad and chips. Tomato soup excellent, thick and tasty. Good bread. Good wine list. Perhaps more expensive than average pub in area, but well worth it. Recommended.

Called there on the way home from Aberystwyth. The welcome was typically Meirionnydd - warm and attentive. Starters were tasty, but having opted for fish cakes, we were served one rather small fish cake. The main meal was a steak, excellent apart from it could be better with onions ( to my taste) ! The sweet was rather below par. Unfortunately the whole meal was rather expensive for a below par bar meal. The location is excellent, on a very important North/South junction. You feel that a top notch meal is within their grasp.

We periodically visit this restaurant when visiting friends in the area. They are members of the Cross Foxes loyalty scheme and visit more often. Even they say their experiences are mixed.
We can vouch for the fact that the food is usually good (maybe a touch expensive) and that the service is cheery and friendly. However, it seems that the team requires strong leadership. If key management personnel are not on duty, the service has a tendency to lose direction and efficiency. We have been disappointed on more than one occasion by this phenomenon, which is a pity because the Cross Foxes can and does do better. To be honest, I don't really appreciate playing roulette with my restaurant visits. If there were more competition in the area they might struggle. Come on - up your game folks!
At least they sell a range of Purple Moose Brewery ales. ;o)

We called at the Cross Foxes on our travels round Wales. It was lunchtime and on a wet and windy day was quite busy.

We ordered the Welsh Black Beast Burger and the Beef and Ale Pie - both £12.95. Both didn't live up to expectations.

The burger was "just a burger - expected more for the price" ad the Beef and Ale Pie lacked flavour and several chunks of the beef were dried out as if the meal had been sitting under the warmer for a while. Just OK was the verdict.

When I paid I was asked if everything was OK and I provided feedback as above. I did receive a 'sorry'.

We have had lots of very good eating experiences in Wales so hope this is a one off.
