Really enjoyed this little restaurant perched at the top of High Cape. Owned by the same guys that brought us Madame Zingara and Bombay Bicycle Club, it has a warm, cosy, quaint atmosphere. Service is intelligent, yet unobtrusive. Food was well-priced, clean, tasty and generous. They let us stay in late and we never had the feeling that they were annoyed we were keeping them open when everyone else had gone. Will definitely come back with a small group of friends or for an intimate dinner date.

First time to this well known local hang out. The food was very good. Wine prices reasonable, the atmosphere was brilliant. Highly recommend an evening out at Sidewalk Cafe.

We are locals and keep on returning to The Sidewalk Cafe. One of the best in Cape Town.Food is always fantastic. Small but cozy. You have to book well in advance for dinner.

We have been there before and will go there again on our next trip.Very simple decor and cosy with a slightly cramped dining area. Outside seating is available on pleasant evenings. The food is just super and the service so casual and friendly. Parking can be a bit difficult as the location is right on the road, so be cheeky and park in the SPAR supermarket car park some 50 metres up the road. There are lots of car minders around so security is not an issue. This cafe is a well kept secret and you will ot be dissapointed. Booking is necessary due to small size.

This very popular cafe up in wildest Vredehoek is a bit of an effort to find if you don't know the area, but worth the effort (tip: book ahead: the place is quite small and gets crowded). Once inside, the welcome is warm: friendly young staff, cosy interior. When we were there, in fact, the place got uncomfortably hot and stuffy, because it is not air-conditioned, and since it was a cold evening doors and windows were kept shut for much of the night -- until it got intolerable and a door was opened. In summer, if the wind is not blowing, doors and windows are opened up.
The food is bistro-style, straightforward and unpretentious. My companions had the fish and the lamb, both of which were excellent; my vegetarian dish was perhaps a bit uninspired; alas, not many chefs seem to find vegetables inspiring. The house wine was very good at the price.
A disadvantage of the youthful staff is the choice of music, which is, to say the least, not music to dine by (the eveing we were there they played hip--hop). Add to this that the sound system is not up to the kind of amplification inflicted upon it, and you end up with sheer noise in an already noisy environment.
So: not for quiet dining in spacious surroundings, but good food in a cheerful atmosphere.
