We traveled to Kuala Selangor during a trip round Malaysia so that we could see the fireflies and also to go to nearby Taman Alam (both of which are well worth a visit). There's very little accommodation in this area and De Palma Inn seemed like a good option. We only had one night there, but suspect we were the only people staying - the place was pretty dead. On arrival we were shown to our chalet, which was fine, if a little cramped. We spent very little time in our room, and just returned there to sleep. Unfortunately this wasn't very easy due to a very loud air-conditioning unit, and not the most comfortable bed/pillow.
Breakfast in the morning was unusual - we didn't get any choice and it wasn't great - very odd frankfurters and scrambled egg with pretty monosyllabic service.
The hotel however redeemed itself when we went to leave and realised that our hire car had a puncture. The receptionist was then very helpful in contacting the car hire company for us, and then while she was doing that 2 of the waiters and a delivery man came and changed the tyre (we hadn't been able to do this due to the bolts being too tight). We left feeling very grateful for the help we'd been given, despite the night's stay not being the most enjoyable.

We booked 2 Junior Suite chalets, but were very disappointed when we opened the door and saw our room! It smelt terrible and the airco didn't work. The lamps were broken and there were ants and other insects all over the place. The rooms were extremely run down!! My parents, who stayed in the other room, had the same problems.
After complaining to the reception lady, we upgraded (and paid almost double!) to their hotel room. We thought there might be less insects, but soon found out that this wasn't the case at all.
The restaurant is terrible as well. The waiting time is enormous and the choice and quality of the food is disappointing. Not to mention the breakfast!
Our booking came with a visit to the fireflies, but that was also disappointing. It takes about 15 minutes to get their by minivan and the guy from the hotel stayed there waiting for us. The fireflies tour didn't take more that 10 minutes. You go by boat and the guy peddles you a little downstream and after 5 minutes he turns around and goes back! Yes the fireflies itself were fascinating, but if you really want to see the fireflies I would definetly recommend you to visit Kuantan! They take much more time for you over there and there are more fireflies to see. It's much less touristic and a lot cheaper.
The Silverleaf monkeys at Monkey Mountain are fantastic!!! We really enjoyed feeding them. The monkeys will climb up your sleeve and shoulder when you feed them. It's nearby the Palma Hotel and a must see for everybody!!!
As far for the Palma Hotel, don't stay there if you have the time to drive back to KL.
Luckily we only stayed there for 2 nights, but it were the 2 worst nights in Malaysia.

We travelled to Kuala Selangor because we wanted to see the fireflies. What I can recommend if you go there by car: join a tour organized through the hotel or get a really good map since the firefly venues are pretty hard to find. Even our onboard GPS couldn`t find them. As for the fireflies, they are a really wonderful experience and make you forget the trouble with finding the place.
Concerning the De Palma Inn my review is less positive. We were given a standard chalet and soon found out that we had to share our unit with two giant cockroaches. Back at the reception we received an upgrade to a so-called suite which they asked 280 RM for (100 RM more than for the standard room).
The "suite" was larger but came with another cockroach and a frog as room mates.
Apart from the unwanted guests we weren`t really happy with the chalets. They look quite nice from the outside, but the inside is pretty much run down. Actually not very inviting, so we decided to leave the Inn and drive all the way back to Kuala Lumpur.
Certainly better than sharing this old hut with bugs and frogs.
Here`s the positive part: the people at the front desk were very polite and friendly. They offered to spray the room, to move to another room or to give us a refund - which we went for.
By the way, the aircon mentioned in the other reviews are actually very noisy, and yes, there are monkeys all over, but they seemed to be rather friendly.
My advice: come to see the fireflies, make an early trip right after sunset, and afterwards drive back to KL - it`s only a 60 minutes drive by night. Kuala Selangor itself has absolutely nothing else to offer than the fireflies and is not worth a visit.

We travelled from Kuala Lumpar only to see the fireflys. if thats all you want then this hotel is ok. Our chalet was clean, tidy, with TV and Mini bar, a comfortable bed and clean bathroom with hot water. The aircon IS noisy.
Our friends however were not lucky, there chalet was very basic with damp walls and a faulty air con unit. if possible and you can afford it. Go for the better chalets.
The restraunt however was disapointing, the service was terrible with the waiter informing us 30 minutes after getting our order that all the starters were unavailable, the beer was warm and served mostly over our table. To be cleaned up with our napkins and left damp on the table.
The fireflys however did not disappoint.

As an extra treat I suggest you make the 20 minute walk to the lighthouse from the hotel Go along the road and take some munchies. You will find loads of friendly monkeys tame enough to take the food gently from your hands. DO NOT FEED THE GREY ONES, only the black ones, as the greys we were told can bite. In fact feeding the monkeys was in my opinion better the fireflys...............

All in all if you ONLY want to see the fireflys I would recommend making a day of it and stayin KL as around the hotel there is just a dusty town and not much else to see.

We stayed a night to watch the fireflies in a superior room (a semi-detached challet). The room is basically clean with facilities like: attached bathroom, small electric kettle for hot drinks, mini-bar, towels and a small tv.

Upon checking in, we realised the split-unit air-con is very noisy - like a loud engine. My roomie made a complaint to the front desk.

In the afternoon, they sent a maintenance guy who went about servicing the air-con. Obviously, it didn't help because it was still that noisy and there were an additional squeaky sound. The guy promised to return with the proper equipment. My roomie made a second complaint and the front desk promised to send another maintenance guy.

That night, we had our seafood dinner and the boat ride to watch the fireflies. It was about 9pm. I had my showered and the air-con is obviously still noisy. My roomie came back to tell me the front desk promised to send another maintenance guy. They couldn't give us another room because it was supposedly "fully occupied".

After I went to complain personally and request a refund, then only they entertain our complaint and finally gave us another room. The front desk had the audacity to ask me to wait for their manager to come in the morning. I was adamant to get back a refund, therefore they had to give me another room even though they insisted earlier they were fully occupied.

Therefore, if you are given room 221, I hope by then they have changed the air-con or fixed the problem. I have made a videoclip of the noisy air-con as a proof of my complaint.

The new room was acceptable and I slept soundly through the night.

Stayed here for 1 night because we wanted to see the fireflies. Managed to book an extremely cheap firefly package 190MYR (around £30.--) for 2 people including dinner, breakfast and firefly excursion.

We were originally booked in a superior room (a semi-detached challet), but decided to upgrade to a family cottage (detached chalet) as the walls between the detached cabins were quite thin and we could hear TV noise from the neighbour upon moving in to the original room. This was not too much of an issue as the costs are very reasonable.

Chalets have seen better times, but are perfectly fine. Laminate flooring and perfectly adequate beds, showers etc... It's not great by any stretch of the imagination, but after researching the options in the area, we figured it was the best place to stay in the area). Expect a basic rural cabin and it will be slightly better than you expected when you get there...

People were friendly and the food in the evening was very tasty too. However, don't leave it too late to get breakfast in the morning, we arrived 30 minutes before the end of breakfast time and there wasn't much left... No tea or orange juice, and bread, fruits not being replenished anylonger etc.

We enjoyed the firefly excursion. Being rowed up and down the river in a small wooden rowing boat seating only 4 for aproximately 25 minutes with the bushes/trees lighting up like Xmas treas was a wonderful, unique experience which I have been told you will only find in very few places in the world.
We were also told by fellow travellers who decided to stay in de De Palma Inn after visiting the firefly resort first (which is the other resort in the area), the firfely resort uses boats with 25-30 people, which to us sounds like a less magical experience than we enjoyed.

The overall verdict is: Don't come here for this hotel or resort in itself, but if you want to come and see the fireflies and are looking for a place to spend one night, this is not a bad place to stay, but do consider upgrading to the family cottage and make sure you get up for breakfast well before they stop serving breakfast.

  • Liked — Reasonable accomodation with small group firefly excursion and good value for money
  • Disliked — thin walls in semi-detached chalets and breakfast
