Perfect family vacation!!! Perfect Island!!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Oct 4, 2020
We originally booked the Alexandra Resort in June. Since the resort was not opened for our travel dates we were upgraded to this amazing resort. The 8 of us were put up in a 4 bedroom house overlooking Columbus beach. I have traveled to many Caribbean islands and have been to many resorts none compare to this one.
Upon arrival to Providenciales we were taken to the airplane hanger to take the 20 minute flight to Ambergris Cay. Once we reached the resort we were sanitized, temperature checked, given champagne and met our most amazing and attentive butlers, Garey and Damion. We were taken by golf carts, which was the mode of transportation on the island, to Calico Jack restaurant for a snack as we did not have time to eat before arrival. We then were taken to our house overlooking the ocean with a pool and rooms with outdoor showers. We were given a cell phone with Garey and Damion’s numbers to communicate with them.
They gave us a list of the excursions that were booked for us. We were booked for fishing, sunset cruise, tubing, and snorkeling with lunch on a private beach. I was a little disappointed that we only had one day of snorkeling as that is my favorite activity. Garey was able to schedule us a second snorkeling trip. We were taken to a reef and were able to jump right off the boat. The reef was spectacular. Thanks again Garey!!!
The restaurant staff was so accommodating and the food was so fresh and delicious. The bartenders Angie, Jay and Junie were awesome. Try the Angie special! They will make you whatever drink you can think of. The last night we had the the best chocolate martinis.
What a wonderful and safe getaway. Being on this island and this resort was like a dream come true.
I can’t say enough about this resort and the entire staff that took care of all our needs.
I’m already planning our next visit! Can’t wait to go back!!!!

Let me preface this review by saying we were in need of a vacation. COVID forced us to cancel four trips this year and we hadn’t been away as a just a couple in a year. This resort was everything we could ask for and more.

Getting to Turks was quite easy with their requirements and TCI Assured travel authorization. After going through customs we were then taken on a private plane to Ambergris Cay. We were greeted with smiles, champagne, and an immediate sense of relaxation.

The grounds were nicely appointed and easy to get around, especially with the personal golf cart!

Our one bedroom cottage on the beach was perfect. Multiple outdoor seating areas including lounge chairs by your personal plunge pool and also on what seems like your own strip of white sandy beach. The outdoor shower was an added bonus and we used it often. The nespresso coffee machine and fridge were great and anything else you needed, coffee, meals, drinks can be delivered by your butler. The housekeeping was twice daily. The housekeepers were pleasant and did a wonderful job, and took notice of the things you needed more of, ie, towels, etc.

The beach was spectacular and clean. They have stand up paddle boards, sail boats, and kayaks. Most days we felt like we were the only ones on the beach.

Activities and excursions including fishing, sunset cruises, private island picnic, daily massages were all great. You can do a private deck dinner and also a chefs dinner with the head chef. I absolutely recommend this. Chef Jason made us a beautiful dinner. Consider booking ahead of time to ensure your desired days and times.

The food was simple, fresh, and delicious. We are fairly adventurous eaters, and enjoyed trying everything. The lobster bisque was delicious as was the paella, lobster, pork chop and halibut for dinner. The jerk pork and ribs were great for lunch. If you like a lighter lunch, the salads were fresh and light. For our private deck dinner chef Elvis made us a traditional West Indian chicken and seafood curry. They were awesome! The boat captain and mate also got us lobsters after our picnic and the kitchen prepared us a two course lobster feast for dinner! The wait staff including Johandry, Djilove, Emma, and Therena were attentive, remembered your likes and dislikes, and made meals fun!

The bar and drinks were top notch. Top shelf liquor, and delicious inventive cocktails. The bartenders Angie, Jay, and Junie were all very friendly and made spectacular drinks. We loved sitting at the bar and having our meals getting to know them.

Our butler Orlando was awesome. He was friendly, always smiling and within a day knew what needed. He was there when we needed him, but also knew when to give us our space.

Fransisco the operations manager was always around, making sure we had everything we needed.

We had a wonderful stay, and got engaged on this trip and everyone made it so special adding to our experience. We had such a great experience with everything we are hoping to get married at their sister resort, Beach House.

I’m not sure how there is anything to complain about at Ambergris Cay. For us it was a perfect vacation. It was private, the service was high end, but still casual and comfortable. We are already talking about returning next year. The nicest thing about this island was that we felt like we made new friends and were part of the Ambergris Cay family.

We went this past August during pandemic. Greeted by the representative at the Provo Airport and transferred to domestic airline. Ambergris Cat’s private plane was having technical difficulties and was being repaired. Upon arrival, we were greeted with welcome drinks and introduced to our butler. Our butler had scheduled 2 activities but we were informed that due to full capacity those were the only activities he was able to schedule during our 8 day stay. When I asked about the massage, we were informed that due to full capacity they weren’t able to accommodate us. I mentioned that 30 min daily massage is listed as part of the all inclusive package. Only then, the butler stated that he would put us on the waiting list. I also enquired about the housekeeping service and again I was informed it’s on as needed basis. On my reservation housekeeping service is listed as daily service. The butler quickly explained that due to Covid, they had to modify it which I understood. Prior to arrival, I asked for 2 adults and 2 children life vests, but again I was informed due to full capacity they weren’t available. The beachfront suite is beautiful, high ceiling, automated blinds, equipped with Nespresso coffee machine, Kindle, Boss portable speaker. Foods are delicious if you like Seafood 🦞. No upcharge for Lobster/ steak 🥩. Wait staffs were amazing. Junee ( F&B supervisor) and Chadaleen ( kids club staff) in particular worth mentioning for excellent hospitality. However,We encountered some issues. The day that we’re scheduled for fishing 🎣 excursion, my daughter had an eczema flare up, which I had to prepare her skin and caused us to run 10 min late. We quickly called our butler to notify of the delay . When we arrived at the dock, the boat 🚣🏽‍♂️ already left. Our butler shrugged 🤷‍♂️ it off and said he already informed the captain. No solution was offered. We were left high and dry. Our kids were so disappointed and upset that they had missed the excursion. It was our last day as we would depart the next day. I’m not the one who likes to complain but I thought the way it was handled was not very accommodating. We traveled around the world and stayed at 5 star luxury resort with butler, this was the worst service for the price that you paid. I decided to contact the manager Maria which quickly responded and provided solution. I write this as constructive feedback. Overall we had good vacation but Ambergris Cay needs to step up its customer service. Update it’s website with the new Covid 19 protocol on housekeeping service, massage/ private plane based on availability, to manage customers expectations.

    Beautiful place

Room service lacking organization on food deployment
Orders. It complete most time’s, so decided to go to the restaurant

    Cleanliness not great.
Mold in the air vents visible
    Not great maid service
Safe not working answer given was... "doesn't work" no repair or substitution

Great dining room and bar service staff smiles all around specially Angie

Much attention needed for detail by management

Lack of training and supervision could be a key in kitchen

Beautiful setting has great potential if managed properly

    Great looking buildings

Pool bottom is peeling due to poor service and is a hazard
Pool tiles are coming off the walls

Management should be more visible and attentive to details
Less excuses should be offered to constructive feedback and take action to improve towards a 5 star experience

    Lots to learn

Overall it was a good time, the best part of course is the secludity of the resort.

The Plane: Ok its tolerable, the flight itself was very smooth both ways. The plane on the way in did not have AC so we got to the island drenched in sweat, felt like a hot oven in the sky. On the way back it was a comfortable temperature inside so we got to the airport nice and dry. I’d keep that in mind, if it were the other way around we would have to travel the rest of the day in nasty sweat.

Food: It was okay for all inclusive standards, the grilled fish was always good and the ceasar salad is also pretty good too. Portions are not huge so I’d suggest ordering a bit more than you usually would (btw Kobe the server at Calico is wonderful)
We ordered dinner room service every night, we just texted the order to our butler and he would bring it within an hour.

Service: We had a great butler, Orlando. He did anything I asked in terms of scheduling, I’m sure they are all wonderful butbwe definitely recommend him.

The 1 Bedroom Villa: Great! The set up was perfect, our big complaint is the insane amount of ants coming in daily lol? Even with all doors/screens closed. The water in the ocean was pretty warm, and so was our salt water pool, a tad too warm should i mention. Which makes it difficult to cool off when the heat gets to 85-90+, just a warning. We did not try the pool by the restaurant, that one could be cooler.

Golf Cart: Awesome! It is capped at a certain speed so don’t expect to go wild on this. But its a decent speed to put around the island.

The tubing: Fun! My first time so I have no real comparison to give but it does seem slightly dangerous lol. Still would do it again. We probably did that for 40 mins maximum, not even, its super tiring, prepare for sore arms haha.

Reef Fishing: This was SUPER fun, I did not fish but my boyfriend did, there was another group of 4 on the boat with us. But we werent crowded. Our fishing guys were super experienced, they actually caught a whole shark while we were out there. Everyone fishing caughy more than one fish, decent size. The whole trip was about 1.5 hours.

The daily spa treatment: Massages are bomb, get them, bother your butler immedeatly when you arrive to schedule you in everyday. It comes with the room so use it. If you leave it up to them they will only schedule you for 1 or 2 if you stay for week. Bother them.
DO NOT GET THE PEDICURE lol I could have done a better one blindfolded. The same lady gave me a beautiful massage the next day, stick to the massages.

The gym: Good size considering theres few people on the island overall, open all night.

The picnic on deserted island: This activity im pretty sure they schedule for all couples. Skip it, it was so boring, they bring you to a small strip of sand in the middle of nowhere where you roast for 1.5 hours while you eat a chicken wrap and theres nothing to do there that you wouldnt do right outside your villa. Minus you cant go to the bathroom or in the shade if you want. Was not a fan lol

What an incredible honeymoon. We truly enjoyed every minute we spent on Ambergris Cay. The staff, service, grounds, beachfront suite, activities, food and atmosphere were all 5 star luxury, without a question. Golf cart was so much fun to have for cruising the island and exploring, a great way to spend a week in paradise!
Our butler, Mr. Awesome Damion, was very attentive and available the entire time. He took great care of us and made sure we never went without anything the entire week.
We had most meals at the restaurant, as we liked the experience of walking there and talking to the staff and other guests. We did room service for a few meals, and everything was just as good that way. We enjoyed all the fresh fruits, salads, fish dishes and especially the desserts!

We stayed in beach front suite # 8. Every bit of it is top if the line, from the outdoor furniture, the bath amenities, bedding and especially the Nespresso machine and tea selection. The plunge pool was perfect for relaxing in between activities, and the covered porch was perfect to get out of the sun while still enjoying being outside. We got a couple light rain showers (and one heavy overnight rain) and again the large, spacious patio with comfortable seating worked out great.

The activities truly are unlimited all inclusive. We had an itinerary planned by Damion upon our arrival including massages, fishing, island picnic, sunset cruise and sailing. They are a perfect amount of time (30 mins to 3 hours) so you can always do other things before or after if you wish. We enjoyed the boating activities, so we talked to Damion and switched our schedule around to go fishing and island hopping on additional trips. That is the best part about Ambergris, everything is at YOUR request, so if you want to do certain things, just ask and they will do their best to make it work.
BIG shout out to the entire water sports crew- they were awesome and those adventures were our favorite part of the trip.

Make sure you explore this island on your golf cart. So many cool secluded beaches, coves, bluffs and other spots to relax. Make sure to check out the hurricane damaged properties, they were really interesting.
I snorkeled all over this island, in both the Atlantic and Caribbean and saw tons of corals and fish. Got to see one turtle, a stingray and a nurse shark as well. Snorkeling on Columbus and Hawkins beach (Atlantic side) should be done carefully as the waves and currents can be strong. Also in the words of E Lo, one of the guides, "I ain gone lie to you, there some sharks over that side" We saw several cruising in the clear water when watching from up high on the bluff above Columbus beach.

    Here are a few notes/tips:
-Utilize the clubhouse! Nobody except us used it. We went each afternoon to play pool and chat with the staff. You can also spot turtles in the lagoon from the balcony and beach. Great place to cool off in the breeze and have a drink/snack.
-SMOOTHIES! The smoothies and fresh juices were awesome. Take full advantage of them.
-Order lunch and supplies to take on a picnic. Find a nice spot and enjoy the view
-Ask for whatever drinks and snacks you like for your room. I love the Barrits Ginger Beer and Damion kept us stocked up!

There are only a few things I would change or suggest
-The small plastic water bottles have to go- They are such a waste and a quick tour of the island will show all of the plastic junk and debris washed up on the shore from our reliance on single use plastics. The tap water was excellent, and ice was readily available. I think each guest should get a reusable water bottle like a Tervis for their stay. There is glass bottled Panna water (very good!) also available for those who do not want to drink from the tap.
-Same goes for the plastic cups drinks are served in. There are some options available that are biodegradable that would be a much better fit for Ambegris. Again, the reusable bottle would help eliminate some of the plastic Solo cups.
-Advertise and use the clubhouse more! I think maybe change the hours to noon-8:00 pm or even later. Maybe host games or activities there in the evening. Cocktail hours/appetizers maybe? Just an idea, we had so much fun there and felt bad other guests did not use it.
-The arrival flight was a little confusing- we landed at PLS airport and then had to exit to meet the rep from Ambergris, and then had to re-check in and go through security again, only to be led to small waiting room with no restroom. I think some of the confusion was COVID related, so not a big deal, but it would have been nice to use the restroom and grab a snack before the wait.
-We always kept a garbage bag in our golfcart to collect the debris that washes ashore. Very sad to see all of the junk from the ocean. Nothing the resort can do about it, but I think guests should all pitch in to help clean up the shoreline if they can. We found a fire extinguisher, tons of plastic debris, fishing nets and rope, buoys, shoes etc. Maybe come up with a plan or incentive for guests to participate in the cleanup? (free t shirt or something?) Would be good experience for kids also.

All in all, it was probably the best vacation we have ever been on. If you are thinking about going, just make the move and book it, you will not regret it!

We have now been to 3 of the 4 Turks and Caicos collection resorts and cannot say enough good things about them. We really like that there are different options depending on how you want to travel (kids, couples, friends group, activities or just relaxing) The food, service and grounds are always great.

Thanks to the staff at Ambergris for an absolutely wonderful trip.
