We have visited the Duke on numerous occasions, but have not been since the new landlord has taken on the pub and site.

Before we visited recently, we were aware from their website that work was being undertaken on the campsite, what we didn't realise or appreciate was how much work is being done!

The pub itself is in the process of having a makeover at the moment and one thing we were hoping for before we arrived was continuity in the atmosphere in the pub. We needn't have worried; there was a lovely fire, easy listening background music and a very nice welcome.

We ate in the pub both nights and as in the past the food is wonderful, with lovely home made chips! There is a nice selection to choose from including beer battered fish, steak and ale pie, steaks to mention a few. All reasonably priced too.

All-in-all, despite the work going on, we really enjoyed our stay and look forward to a return visit later in the year to see how the site and pub has continually improved.

I'll begin by saying up front that everyone has different opinions/perceptions/requirements for pretty much everything. I rarely get time away from my young children so on the 2 or 3 times a year I can arrange an evening away with friends to cycle and camp in the Peak District, what I require is a simple, quiet field, next to a simple, quiet pub that can serve me wholesome home cooked food at the end of the ride, followed by a few drinks with a short walk back to my tent when it's time to bring the proceedings to a close.
The Duke of York is near to the Tissington Trail. £5 per person to pitch in the open fields. Around £15 each for main course and pudding. Tent 100 yards away. So it meets my requirements.
Three of us arrived at the pub as planned on Saturday 11th May ’13 at 2.30pm. We were greeted in the bar area by Chris (one of the owners) who directed us towards the bottom field so that we could pitch our tents. The field was virtually empty so we could pitch wherever we wanted with an unobstructed view as far as the eye could see. We then set off on our bikes for some light trail riding, getting back to the tent at around 6pm. Once up at the pub, we spent just over an hour in the quiet bar area, after which we went through to the dining room to take our table for dinner which we had booked for 7.30pm.
I always book the evening meal to be sure of being able to be fed on time as most restaurants can get quite busy between 7pm and 10pm, especially at weekends. Although they had a surprise table of 12 to fit in, it didn't affect our service and the food came out in a timely fashion - even though Keith (the other owner) sent back our first steak and ale pies as they were slightly overdone. The pie was delicious by the way and the fat chips fried in beef dripping we’re superb. Once suitably fed, we returned to the bar to finish off our evening.
The bar was never busy so getting served was simply a matter of getting out of the chair. We sat and chatted over our drinks and at midnight there was no pressure for us to finish up and go, with Keith even joining us for a nightcap to send us on our way.
We all slept well and once packed and loaded up, we decided to pop back into the pub for breakfast which was available from 10.30am. 15 mins later, we we presented with dinner plates containing pretty much most of what we have come to expect from a Full English, after which we all headed off back to our rat-race city lives without any complaints.
Having stayed at this pub 2 or 3 times a year for the last few years for similar afternoons/evenings, I can definitely say that Keith and Chris are having a positive impact. The extensive (ongoing) work on the hard standing field with extra electric hook ups is there for all to see and the changes to the menu to make sure that everything is served fresh with that homemade taste is definitely the way forward.
Will we be going again? Most definitely! As I said earlier, it satisfies our requirements. Will everyone else who goes come away with the same perception that we have? I doubt everyone will but I can’t see how most wont. For me, it is what it is – a quiet country pub ideally located for the Tissington with the guarantee of good food and drink at the end of the ride.

Well what can I say?!

Only that the owner of the site should be able to take criticism about the expensive (certainly not worth it) price of the meals!!

He is a very rude and bombastic person!!

Had a great lunch with friends at the end of a very busy Bank Holiday weekend. Very hospitable owners - Keith and Chris - and attentive staff. Lovely hot main courses and filling puddings. We'll be back.
