I stayed at java Cove for 2 weeks late April 2013 with my hubby and friends, this is the second time for my hubby and he kept raving about the place so I came this year...Wow had the best time the staff 'go out of their way to help you' every single person who works there is always willing to chat, on my first day of arrival Paul (owner) said hello not with a hello but a hug cause that's the way they do it :) the locals are also extremely friendly, the accommodation is comfy and clean, food yum, the new pool is fantastic would sit in the pool and watch Colin surfing, which he was having 3 a day, we are going back next year, but we had better get in quick cause everyone will want to come here. Room Tip: Just don't be in a hurry to get there remember things come to those who wait :)

Hit there in a holiday so beach crowded for two days. Get up early before they arrive I guess. Away from there you could have quiet walks to the end of the beach, into the hills or to an abandoned hotel at the end of the long beach. Great safe surfing straight out front. Shocking road in for the last hour and a half. Good warungs close by.

Room Tip: don't get the one downstairs behind the bar...feels claustrophobic

Hi Sofia,

Thank you for staying with us and posting a review.

If you have time we would appreciate it if you could email us directly to let us know what was not to your satisfaction in your room. The Terrace Deluxe room you stayed in is one of our most requested rooms because its ground floor corner location offers privacy with it's own little grassed area in front. Our second-floor rooms (OceanView Rooms) may be more suitable for you as they are open to the views of the Batu Karas bay.

We value any feedback you may have as we are always looking to improve our guests' experience.

My wife and 8 yo daughter stayed at the JavaCove Beach Hotel, Batu Karas for 9 nights in early April 2013. As a keen and reasonably experienced surfer, I was extremely impressed with the variety and quality of waves available in the area. During my stay, I enjoyed peeling, long board friendly right handers at the point break directly in front of JavaCove, to slightly more challenging waves nearby at the Reef. I was also fortunate to surf on 2 separate occasions a right hand reef break down the coast (45 minutes by motor bike or 20 minutes by boat) that on a decent swell, would keep even the more hard core surfers happy.

For non-surfers, other activities are limited by the atrocious state of the road. A 35km trip to the ‘nearby’ Pangandaran National Park can take a bone jarring 2 – 2.5 hours each way, limiting the amount of time available to actually enjoy the park. We attempted the journey, but gave up in desperation & turned back half way there. Green Canyon River Gorge is a quick trip from Batu Karas & well worth it. Cruise the emerald green river in a colourful, motorised outrigger. At the beginning of the Gorge, you can get out and swim up the waterways to waterfalls and swimming holes. However, if your family aren’t into surfing, & prefer a destination with more things to do, then seriously consider going it alone.

We stayed in the ground floor Terrace Deluxe room. It was spacious & comfortable, however lacked water views & privacy. Internet access was hit & miss & very slow. Only one internet plug-in stick was available which was shared amongst all the guests. The problem was solved toward the end of our stay when Paul the owner installed a decent wifi router.

The hotel has a warm & friendly feel to it, with surfing being the common denominator. The menu could do with a bit more variety (ok if you are there for a short stay) however Paul has a philosophy of encouraging guests to eat at the nearby warungs to help support local businesses. The pool area is a great place to hang between surfs, or to enjoy a sundowner, however some shade during the day would be a huge bonus.

We flew from Jakarta with Susi Air to Cijulang. From Cijulang, Susi Air arranged a mini bus to get us to Batu Karas ($2.50/pax each way). The trip to & from the airport takes app 30 minutes. From the comments made by other guests who ‘drove’ from either Jakarta or Bandung, we are glad we flew. Be warned, Susi Air do not accept credit cards, so cash is king and be prepared to pay the equivalent of an extra passenger for your board. Let them know in advance, because if they are full, your board may be left behind. Fairly decent longboards can be hired at the beach for a mere $5/day.

Another tip – avoid Indonesian public holidays. If you are there on a weekend, get your surf in early. We counted seven coaches arriving in the village on a Saturday morning, jam packed with locals. However, as quickly as they appear, by late afternoon they have generally all left for the trip back to either Bandung or Jakarta.

I must emphasise how extremely friendly, helpful & polite the staff are. We felt we were part of an extended family, which made our departure an emotional one. Overall, I would highly recommend JavaCove as the preferred accommodation in Batu Karas.

A very big “terima kasih” to Paul, Iman, Ainun & all the great crew for helping make the trip a truly memorable one.

Thanks for your words John. It was a pleasure meeting you and your family and we are glad you enjoyed your time with us.

As you mentioned, we have now installed WiFi in our cafe/bar. Just to let our future guests know, the WiFi here relies on a shared dial-up connection so can be very slow at times (no broadband here). We will upgrade to a more reliable connection when it becomes available in the village, but, well we're still waiting!

Btw, the waves have been amazing lately! See you next time...

Have just spent two weeks at Java Cove with family and friends, for the second time. I love this place. I dont surf but it is so laid back you cant help but relax. The staff were amazing as always. The pool is a great addition. The view of the surf from the pool is fabulous. When it was time to leave there were tears !!! I definitely could have stayed longer. Thanks Paul and Iman, Ainun, Nevi, Donie, Elon, Dadi ....... and everyone. We will be back.

We went to Batu Karas to attend our daughter's wedding. The hotel was like an oasis and lives up to one of the best hotels in Indonesia. The staff were delightful - not full on English but friendly and very obliging. Mixed well with like minded fellow guests. "Difficult" to get there (roads atrocious) but well worth it once you arrive.

Room Tip: We had the upstairs deluxe rooms with full 180 view of the beach - see picture for sample view.

This is a nice little hotel in Batu Karas, the best one in the area. The staffs are very helpful. I stayed there for 2 nights. The location is exactly in front of the beach and one of the night we enjoyed a lovely night by the beach and the hotel staff helped us to make bonfire. It was unforgettable.

I had a two week stay at this great little hotel. The staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and they were always smiling. The breakfasts are good but I particularly like the way the hotel encourages you to eat and spend in the village instead. The surf was very mellow, small but fun. The village is very laidback and the countryside around beautiful. I will go back again.
