“"Highly Recommended"”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

We booked a table of 12 to celebrate a joint birthday. We were delighted with our choice. The decor and furnishing in the Bell are very "on trend" and the whole scheme has been beautifully put together, it's worth a trip just to enjoy the surrounding. Certainly not your average pub.

Our table was set back in a private area that was absolutely delightful with French doors leading out into the garden, ideal for our children to make a quick exit to go and play. The staff were attentive, funny and very accommodating. The meal was delicious and reasonably priced, we would most certainly come back again. Well done and thank you to all concerned.

“Lovely Sunday Lunch”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

We have had Sunday Lunch on a number of occasions and it is always lovely with high quality meat and lovely fresh veg. The staff are always really friendly and helpful.

I do not normally eat desserts but the sharing platter is to die for, with a great mix of home made desserts.

Would recommend The Bell to anyone

“All style over substance”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

We booked a couple of weeks in advance for a romantic table for two. What we were given was a table in the back of the restaurant next to a large table for 12. When they came in and we saw that it was going to be a noisy party, we asked to be moved. We were then seated in the waiting/bar area. It was a tiny, rickety table in the front window but at least it was quieter. We were then approached by another waitress that told us our table was ready (the same table we were sat at before!). We explained that we asked to be moved for obvious reasons and were "okay" with where we were. We asked the waitress who first came to serve us to light the candles since it was supposed to a romantic table (we were celebrating our anniversary afterall).

My husband ordered smoked salmon, which he liked and I had a spicy curried pumpkin soup with croutons. It was good for the first few spoonfuls but then after the croutons were gone, I found it hard to finish it as it was overwelmingly spicy. For our mains my husband had pork ribs which were underwhelming and overspiced, "shake and bake" seasoned potato wedges, which were inedible. I had lemon sole which were formed into stuffed sausage like rolls and served on a bed of old samphire that had stringy hard fibers in it, which I had to keep spitting out into my napkin and chinese noodles. What made the dish awful was that the chef had hidden raw red hot chilli slices in the noodles and samphire. I had to pick them all out. I think that's an awful trick to play on your customers, who don't appreciate a mouth full of fire. The sole was insipid and lacking in any kind of flavour. I did bring it up to the manager who then charged me the appetizer price instead of a full plate price since I only managed to finish half of it. We finished off with a couple of puddings, mine was decidedly more of a children's pudding called 'The Bell's Sundae' which had flapjack pieces and chocolate icecream with mini marshmallows. All in all, I felt that the food wasn't great. All of the dishes, though nicely presented, lacked the right flavours - they were either overwhelmingly overspiced or just bland or in the case of my dessert - too sickly sweet. My husband liked his lemon posset though.

The decor of the place is furnished in a shabby chic style but on the cheap side of shabby. There wasn't much of an atmosphere with the lighting in the dining areas being too bright. Not sitting us at the right table for a romantic night out was definitely a downer. I hated that our last night in the Cotswolds had to be eaten there. It is fairly ordinary and would probably appeal to some locals. I would avoid for a romantic meal out.

Thank you for your detailed feedback and we are sorry you were disappointed. It is difficult in a busy popular pub to find a quiet romantic table on a weekend but hopefully we got there in the end. So sorry that the food and decor wasn't to your taste.

“Quality country dining”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

Have eaten at The Bell on a number of occasions and never been disappointed: family Sunday lunch, sharing platters in lovely gardens and excellent value mid-week lunch with friends. Here's some litmus tests: lots of gravy with roasts, lemon sole on midweek menu; seafood sharing platter with smoked fish/shellfish as well as all usual shellfish; tea served in china teapots with small dish of Smarties! It's a cut above and the set price menus are particularly good for the money. Thoroughly recommended.
