“Lovely hotel - second visit”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

We stayed at the Ettington park hotel on a Sunday evening in April following a day in Startford. It was lovely, beautiful room, lovely food just what we wanted after a busy day around Stratford. We had a package of dinner bed and breakfast for £159 and then spent another £70 on drinks which included a pre dinner cocktail & g & t, bottle of wine, coffee and a whiskey. It was a great way to spend a Sunday evening. Restaurant very busy which was great! Breakfast was a little disappointing but nothing major to complain about. Had a good walk around the grounds on Monday to finish off our stay. Lovely weekend! We'll be back!

We have just returned from a couple of nights' stay at Ettington Park. What a fantastic hotel. Set in beautiful grounds in the lush tranquillity of the English countryside where the peace is disturbed only by birdsong and the distant bleating of sheep. This was a wonderful country house stay. Our suite was spacious with a wonderful view through neo-gothic windows and I enjoyed watching TV whilst in the bath. The room itself was a little tired and drab and the sofa-bed was not great but the bed itself was large and very comfortable and the room had all the amenities I would expect of a luxury hotel. (There was even the offer of a "gym / yoga in a bag" which allows guests to exercise in their rooms.) The staff were amazing, they greeted us like old friends and were attentive and accommodating. The pool itself was rather too small for serious swimming but the pool area with its loungers, spa-pool, sauna and steam room was a pleasant and relaxing retreat. We thought the food and wine was delicious (although not cheap). The breakfast offered a great choice and was cooked to order rather than a hot buffet. We were particularly impressed that, for dinner, we were given a vegetarian menu, rather than having to make do with a token vegetarian dish. Thanks to all the staff at Ettington Park for a lovely stay.

This is without doubt one of the most difficult reviews that I have ever written. Ettington Park is a truly magnificent place and has the potential to be a really great hotel.

We paid £155 for an Executive Double with breakfast. The room was pretty good, except that the bed was a standard double and the shower cubicle was, let's say, compact.

The really disappointing part of the experience was the restaurant. On checking in, we were asked if we wished to dine in the restaurant that evening and we made a reservation for 8.30pm. We were asked to come down at around 20 minutes before this time to 'enjoy' our canapes.

We duly came down at around 8.00pm and some 20 minutes later were presented with two mini jacket potatoes filled with a tasteless white substance and a wooden tooth pick onto which had been secured half a cherry tomato and a slice of really appalling mozerella. At around 8.40, by which time we had not even been given menus, we were asked if we would like a complementary glass of champagne, which we willingly accepted.

There were three menus to choose from. A 3 course table d'hote for £39.50, an a la carte, with starters priced at around £10, mains at between £22 and £30 and a tasting menu priced so ridiculously, I didn't even bother to consider it. There were a couple of wines priced at just below £30 a bottle, the rest priced so ridiculously that we found it very difficult to make a choice. In the end we chose a modest Pinot Noir priced at £38.

At 9.00, we were shown to our table, soon after which we were informed that, because we hadn't ordered an hors d'ouvre, our meals would arrive in around 20 minutes. When they did, they were average at best, and certainly didn't meet the level of expectation generated by their price.

Our cheese platter was priced at £14 and comprised of 4 small tranches of dull, uninspiring dairy products.

Breakfast was much better, although our tea and toast arrived 10 minutes after our cooked breakfast following numerous prompts from myself.

The staff are really friendy, but clearly lack the level of training required by a hotel that has positioned itself in the luxury segment.

My only recommendation would be stay if you must, but do not dine here. There are so many other much better restaurants just a short taxi ride from Ettington.

Ettington claims to be a Hand Picked hotel. I'd love to know who did the picking!

Room Tip: The Executive Double is spacious, but the facilities are not luxurious

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at Ettington Hall and loved every minute of it. The room was beautiful, the staff were exceptional and the food divine.
The staff were attentive, nothing was too much trouble and their attention to detail was amazing. The pool and spa area was lovely, well maintained and very serene.
This was our second stay at Ettington Hall and we will Definately be visiting again.

Having written previous TA reviews for HPH's I keep thinking that eventually I will find a poor one. Well this ISN'T it. Set in 44 acres of grounds and perfect for visiting the North Cotswolds and Stratford upon Avon, Ettington Park is the archetypal English country house. We stayed on a BB & EM basis for 2 nights. Our room (17) was a disabled accessible room, slightly larger with a wet room, this is one of 2 accessible rooms they have and because of the country house layout of the hotel can only be access by going outside and around the back ( a slight inconvenience rather that a problem). The hotel had a new General Manager 5 months ago, she runs a good ship, all staff are friendly and attentive. The maitre d'hotel was fantastic as were all his wait staff, nothing was too much trouble. All in all a very very pleasurable experience , I'm sure we will return.

Booked to stay at Ettington park for my partner's birthday. We were delighted as we approached the hotel; it looked exactly as it had on the website - stunning! The staff were all really friendly throughout the stay and our room was nice with a lovely comfy bed.
The only thing that let this place down was their food. We had booked to dine on our first night there and were looking forward to being a little spoiled by the elegant sounding food. Unfortunately this was a big let down. Everything, from the canapes, to the main course, to breakfast the next morning was just not good. The battered haddock, which was supposed to be a tempura batter, was thick and greasy. The main course of scallops was just awful with none of the food tasting nice together and the scallops themselves wrapped in a thick piece of greasy bacon. Then there was supposedly a pudding of Mille Feuille, which was just 3 pieces of chocolate stacked on a mousse, not quite a mille feuille! With a cold breakfast the following morning and a slop of scrambled eggs that contained more milk than egg, we concluded the meal had not been a one off. The food here just was not good.

Thank you for completing your review and the comments you have made. I am pleased to hear that on the whole you enjoyed your stay with us. I have fully investigated the points you have raised concerning food with my head chef; please let me assure you that this is not typical of the standard we offer. The scallops were wrapped in pancetta not bacon, and the scrambled egg is made with cream not milk, which gives this a completely different texture, I apologise that this was not explained to you at the time. I would be more than happy to discuss this with you further should you wish to contact me. Please accept my apologies and I do hope that this will not deter you from visiting us again for a future stay with us. Kind regards

Recently here for a work function, very grand building. Beautiful rooms full of character, staff were very good, food was excellent, breakfast was good too. We dined in a room upstairs with a wooden ceiling, would be perfect for weddings. I would definitely return for a weekend break I there was a deal on price.

There was also a pool and sauna that we didn't have time to use.
