Owner description: Closson Chase is a quality-driven producer that has helped spearhead the birth of the Prince Edward County wine industry. Since 1999, it has been committed to creating distinctive wines that rival the world’s finest. Set in Hillier, Ontario, the estate is over 30 acres of south facing, limestone-rich soil under vine; planted high density to the classic Burgundian-varietals of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with small yields, French-inspired vinification and careful barreling in 100% French oak.

This was the first winery we visited and we were a little surprise at the cost of sampling. (3 sample for $10) This was the most expensive if you are just out to sample. They did wave this if you purchased wine. The lady who helped us told us some of the other wineries we should visit and provided us with a map.

I heard about this off-the-radar vineyard while doing some online wine reviews and decided to make it the destination of a weekend get-away (from Montreal). It was worth the drive. The staff is very well-informed, the location idyllic, and the wines excellent. Thank you, Closson Chase, for making me a Chardonnay convert!

It's a bit off the beaten path but well worth the trip off of hwy 33. By sourcing grapes from the county and from Niagara you can experience the winemaker's craft from two very different terroirs. Taste a flight of Chardonnays and and see.

We were given a picnic lunch and wine tasting by our hotel (The Merrill Inn) and came here to enjoy a picnic lunch ! As I don't drink, my wife enjoyed both our "tastes" ! The staff here poured her a taster of Red while she waited for them to our a flight of 3 tasters or white wine. We ate in the garden overlooking the Vineyard (an very idyllic setting)!
My only suggestion is that they warn people that they have very loud "noisemakers" to scare the birds from the grapes ! The first time it went off; it scared the daylights out of me !
