Pukenui Lodge Motel
Reviewed January 10, 2012

If you want to get away from crowds of tourists and enjoy a sunrise on the edge of a cliff over a stunning harbour, this is the place to be. 4 Square supermarket is just over the road, as well as a liquor shop, a pub and a bakery with take away food. A small landscaped swimming pool is a refreshing bonus if your trip to one of the beautiful beaches in the area did not eventuate in swimming due to weather or water temperature. You do need a car, though, to get to those beaches, unless you are eager to swim in the harbour close to the wharf just beneath the motel (2 minutes walk). Mobile reception is a bit patchy and better on the edge over the harbour but for the sake of peace and quiet and the beauty of the area, you should sacrifice your addiction for virtual networking and satisfy your other senses.

Room Tip: Each of the motel rooms give a good view over the garden with the swimming pool and the mountain on...

This motel takes brutal advantage of the fact that it is ideally located half way to Cape Reinga on the Northland Peninsula, so we thought it might be a good idea to stay one night there after our trip northwards from Auckland .... oh dear.

The furniture are from around 1960 and haven't been replaced ever since. Everything is old and totally worn out, and although the owners really try to keep it clean by the looks of it, I was grossed out whenever I had to touch anything.

The often recommended pub on the other side of the road closes its kitchen at 7 pm, so if you happen to either want dinner a bit later or just can't get to Pukenui before that time, well bad luck then huh. No chance to get anything to eat at all .... when we were there, the really nice reception person phoned the owner of a pub 3 km away and persuaded him to make us a burger (a roll with a beefsteak and a salad leaf inside).

We paid 109 NZD for one night, and the owners should be ashamed of themselves for ripping people off like that, given the fact that we paid 98 NZD for a 5 star apartment that offered absolutely every available luxury the night before!

Situated in the middle of the small village of Pukenui this place is about one minute walk to the wharf if you want to try some fishing and is right across the road from the general store, a cafe/restaurant and a liquor shop so you wont go hungry.
It has a swimming pool on site and also a place to wash you car which is very handy in these parts as there are some really rough roads to overcome.
We stayed in a studio unit which was very small and old and probably to be fair would have been called a cabin at alot of other places in New Zealand but itwas functional never the less.
Housekeeping was fairly basic with minimal cleaning done while we were there even to the point where we had to ask for all our dirty towels piled on the floor to be removed.
At NZ$110 a night it was not very good value really but the choice in this arera is very limited.

Rooms were clean and tidy, it is a good site with lovely harbour views and a nice pool, however, the lady manager is not the worlds happiest person and chases every cent. Mobile phones don't work there unless you walk out to the edge of the land 100 m away, They charge like wounded bulls for land line and internet. Don't have free WiFi instead have some complicated internet system that is almost impossible to logt off and so you pay even if you switch your computer off. Restaurant over the road is very average, don't get excited about it.

Very good atmosphere, nice and clean room, nice pool, nice view. Not in a crowed place, and excellent base to go explore the top of NZ. You can even rent boar for sand dunnes. Nice people. No food facility on ground, however there is a great place accross the road, the only pub restaurant around so expect some waiting but def. worse it, the food is really really good. And also there is a 4 square, so you can cook in your studio.
Great stay
