A lovely spot for a country inn and very good base to tour the Nth York moors from. Not the friendliest welcome, but oh well! The rooms are pretty basic but very clean and tidy. We didn't have dinner in the restaurant, but we tried the puddings in the bar after our day out exploring.... yummy. A very nice breakfast awaited us the next morning as we left for the Dales.

We are lucky to have The Fox as one of our local pubs.
It is a well run pub with really nice food. The regulars are a really friendly crowd and will engage you in conversation if you so wish. They are an eclectic bunch of folk , and I feel represent Yorkshire's broad acres very well.

The bar is open all day, every day and the food is well above pub grub average fare.
The staff are excellent and actually appear to enjoy working there which is not always the case nowadays, particularly in the large pubchain establishments. Also dogs are not just welcomed, they are almost encouraged.

There is a small games room at the bottom of the pub with a pool table, tv and a " Hang the ring on the bull's nose" game, well, you are in Yorkshire!

No problems what so ever taking your dog to this lovely little pub based accommodation in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside. Various types of live stock such as sheep and hens wandering freely around, so best to keep dogs on a lead.
Rooms are spotless. Food is good and is served either in the bar or in the dining room. Staff friendly and helpful. Lots of local walks or a short drive from the coast and towns such as Whitby, Saltburn and Robin Hoods Bay.
Am sure we will visit here again.

My husband and I visited here for a drink and some food for our anniversary. It was quite a drive but we had heard good reviews on the food. We both had Whitby battered cod, and it was extremely tasty and good value. The poignant thing that stuck with both of us was how helpful and humorous the staff were - in particular the barmaid. We ended up staying all night talking to the staff and locals and had an amazing anniversary. The atmosphere at the fox and hounds is what we shall be returning for.

Turned up to celebrate the wedding of my best friend. The pub is half a mile away from Danby Castle where the wedding took place. Granted we had booked for 12 but in the end there was 20 of us, shoved in the far end room out of the way of the rest of the pub. When we tried to order our food we were confronted by a miserable land lord, who didn’t want us to order any food, after persuasion he begrudgingly took orders in for 8 people, 6 & 6 people. Two people from the party tried to order and were told they were only allowed a sandwich! We waited over one hour for the first meals to actually arrive, this was for the first 8, it took 20 minutes for the next 6 and another twenty for the last six. Staff were miserable ,unhelpful and were clearly unhappy wit us being there, i have never felt so unwelcome anywhere. The bride was almost in tears as her guests were all left waiting while all covers in the ‘restaurant’ were served first and our party last, she couldn’t even eat her Steak . The groom thanked the land lord at the end of the night, the meal was mediocre and the land lord didn’t deserve the £500 which we’d all given him! Doesn’t deserve the business and I wouldn’t be surprised if this place was boarded if we ever drove passed again. In this climate you do not turn away good business just because you might have to work harder to please somebody, especially a customer! Heaven forbid!

We stayed at the Pub hotel with our family when my daughter got married at the nearby Danby Castle, the Landlord Adrian and his assistant, I think she was called Sarah, went out of their way to organise the 5 rooms over two days with various changes of guests, nothing was too much trouble. Sarah made it feel as if she had it all in hand with the complications involved, room changes, shared rooms for bridesmaids to get ready etc.

One party lost their key returning at 12.30 at night, had to knock the landlord up next door, he turned up with a smile on his face saying it was a pleasure to be of assistance, he then went on to search the kitchen to provide a flask of cold milk for our grandson to be feed in the morning, all done without making us feel as if we were putting him out in anyway what so ever, marvellous!
The last day we had guests that came down over an hour late for breakfast, we were all hanging around after having finished and still they were offered a full breakfast even though it was un expected.
There rooms are freshly made over, clean well decorated, Tv, shower or bath, comfy beads with nice linen & warm, what more could you want and the price is moderate to say that you get a great breakfast included.

We were staying over a bank holiday, had tried around finding that most establishments insisted on a two night stay, where as the Fox & Hounds would accept a single night booking which some of our friends took advantage of.

We had a meal the night before, for our close family who were staying at the hotel and traveling from nearby, we were provided with the end private dining room to have for ourselves a part of 15, even though it was a busy night at the restaurant & lovely bar, which has open fires, cosy corners and great atmosphere.

We will definitely return to stay sometime even though it is only an hour from where we live, it’s a great place to have a family gathering, fantastic views of the North Yorkshire moors, a few miles to the seaside, Whitby, Sands End, Saltburn on Sea, Brunswick bay.
