Apart from some troubles on the checkin (the old story: if it's not written, you didn't ask for it...) the stay was amazing. The hotel has a beautiful view and is located in a really calm place, far from any noise.
Also they mixed the 18th century decoration (the original one) with modern decorations (because they had to expand the hotel to a new building) really well.

The Melia Palacio is wonderful: you're surrounded by antique furnitures and you feel like you're in the middle of a movie! The room was nice even if a bit small. The place is in Lousa, I'd say "in the middle of nowhere", so if you want to relax is perfect; if you're planning to visit Coimbra you have to consider about 40 minutes of car trip.

We stayed at this Hotel for our anniversary and it was a very pleasant stay. We stayed in the largest room in the old palace part of the Hotel and the room was very large and comfortable.
Some things needed a bit of TLC (scruff marks on the walls and furniture, stains in the carpet, cracks in the windows), but it was nothing that ruined the overall experience.
The Hotel has a nice garden, with a kids playground, small romantic gardens with water fountains and a nice swimming pool. There is a small part of the garden which is enclosed but the stairs to access it were made of wood and completely broken, and by the looks of the rusty nails coming out, it's been like this for quite a while, which might be a bit of hazard for children.
While I was there I warned the reception about some drinks glasses that were left in the children's playground by other guests, but 2 days later they were still there. I also told them about a minor problem in our bed and they also ignored it.
The view is not that as great as you would expect; the front of the hotel is facing an old town square and the other is open to the valley, but the Hotel is not that high and there's a new urban development that it faces to, with lots of new houses and apartment buildings.
We dined at the lovely restaurant and when our daughters got a bit too much of a handful we asked to be served in our room, which they promptly did. The server was very accommodating and very professional.
Breakfast is served in a very nice room with floor to ceiling windows and is well stocked with great food and drinks, so nothing to complain about there.
The Hotel advertises a lot for wedding receptions so if you're staying there for the weekend, chances are that it will be noisy at night (and the windows in the old palace are single glazed).
Although they provide free Wi-Fi the coverage is not that great and it was impossible to connect to (and this was their best room).
All in all it was a very pleasant stay and it would be perfect if the magament just paid a bit more attention to the well being of guests and the maintenance of the property.

Room Tip: The hotel has two parts, a new refurbished one with better views, and the old palace one, with old r...

Melia Palacio da Lousa Boutique is absolutely great hotel. I usually avoid hotel which has 'boutique' word in their name claiming (probably incorrectly) that this is excuse to have things done not exactly properly. With Melia Palacio de Lousa this was different - hotel is just perfect. I absolutely loved that. It's not often that I do have such positive impression.

LOCATION
Hotel is located in two connected buildings in the centre of quiet Lousa. Historical and modern combination with nice views, garden, swimming pool and outside sitting area. Few minutes walk to Central Square, church and town hall. From there you can hike to the Lousa Castle and other places. Hotel reception will provide you complimentary maps. There is large car parking on the back of the hotel (longer drive, but then short walk through garden).

CHECK-IN
Reception staff was very kind, professional, efficient and just natural. I loved that friendly approach. I have booked Palace Superior room (#10) for our short stay, so that was in the older part of the building.

ROOM
Room decor is kind of orange-reddish, but very pleasant for your eyes. Warm colours and good quality materials and furniture used to decorate room helps to enjoy your time. Very relaxing option. We had quite nice view over garden, swimming pool and surroundings.
There was very comfortable King Bed (for some could be too hard); there is sitting area and working desk. There is no Wi-Fi in the room (it is in the lobby rooms), but reception is happy to borrow you cable to connect to Internet (complimentary).
Large bathroom was spotless clean (as room and all hotel anyway) and very bright. Warm water whenever needed, fluffy towels and good quality toiletries provided.

PUBLIC AREAS
Hotel has few lounge rooms in palace section. Very elegant and with no sign of dust - I was impressed. It's not happening in "old places", haha. Large, spacious staircase was amazing as well.

BREAKFAST
Buffet breakfast was included in my rate and that was truly stunning. Not like a crazy huge selection, but everything you need to have tasty, local styled breakfast. Staff was very discreet, but always there when we needed them.

CHECK-OUT
Check-out was hassle free and we received as well small bottle of their local liqueur - Licor Beirao. WOW :)

My overall experience was very good and I'd be happy to go back there and stay few more days. Such a peaceful and comfortable place with great people around. I can definitely recommend it you my friends and client (I'm a travel consultant). THANK YOU.

Room Tip: Superior palace rooms are just great.

We stayed here as part of a Cosmos tour. Our advertised accommodation was for a hotel in Coimbra but was booked out, so our guide was directed to bring us here instead.

It was about 7.30pm when we arrived and our room was in the new section and was quite nice. We had a set menu for dinner, and it was acceptable. Breakfast was also quite good. Service was a bit hit and miss, got the impressions that they were not used to coach tours here. Wifi available in the public areas, however they did provide us with a cable to access free wired Internet in our room.

The pool area looked nice, as did the hotel generally. Unfortunately, we were not there for long enough to comment on much else.
