“Montemar: a hidden gem”
Reviewed February 13, 2014

Montemar Beach Club is one of my family's favorite getaway destinations for many reasons. It's a beautiful, large and lush property, beautifully lit up at night, with a nice wide sandy beach and child-friendly sea that is even and shallow; the greenery is amazing! - it is very quiet - no loud music! - and generally not overrun (unless it is a holiday or teambuilding weekend, or during the Philippine summer period). The rooms are nice, large and comfortable - especially the rooms on the ground floor, with their own little veranda - some things are a bit rickety, like the screen doors and the sliding shutters, but these are fairly minor inconveniences. The food is good and the menu varied, with primarily Filipino dishes, with a lovely view of the sea when sitting outside; and the staff is very friendly and helpful. You can ask for a bonfire to be lit on the beach at night, which is magical. Lots of watersports activities, a small fishing lagoon, tennis courts, a kids playground, a tree bridge, 2 pools that are open to non-members, and they have a small pawikan (seaturtle) conservation center - once a year, there is a Grand Pawikan Day when people can adopt a baby turtle and help release them into the sea. In short, it's a wonderful place that feels like home - my children roam around freely, as it is a familiar and safe environment, and my husband and I can kick back and relax. It is a members' club, but non-members can stay, too. It's a 3-hour drive from Makati, but well worth it for a 2-night stay, and parts of the drive over SCTEX have spectacular views of green and mountains.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms in Inn I or II if possible. These are closest to the beach and pool. Inn I in particul...

Stayed there last december 2013. Sixth time to stay there with family and friends. We always go back for the beach because it's not as crowded compared to others. The beach is cleaner and child-friendly because the water's calm and doesn't slope down steeply. The water also smells clean, hindi malansa.
The rooms have been renovated though not as posh like city hotels. But hey, the resort's been around since the late 70s.
The food has improved considerably same with the service. The manager, marius offered to have our food cooked the way we want it which was very considerate of him. We also liked the binagoongan surprise which was quite unusual 'cause its with chocolate. Menu choice is ok but could use upgrading. Oldtimer jay and also francis were their usual efficient affable selves. the others did a great job too owing I think to being better trained.
The tiny front office doesn't do justice to the charming expanse of the resort. The teens complained about no wifi (still) but enjoyed the beach and roaming the grounds.
Overall it was a far better stay for us. Will definitely come back.

I have been traveling in lots of places for the weekends and am happy to share this was one of the most relaxing getaways I had ever come across. Please note that this place is not commutable and you have to have your own car/ vehicle for travel. We arrived from Manila and its around 4 hours distance after necessary halt on the way.

From Subic, its around an hour to Bataan - Morong from where its another hour to Bagac sub division where this beach resort was located. The journey was wonderful on twisted hilly roads with wonderful combination of light and shades by tall trees.

The property was by private membership but recently had been opened for non members also with a higher but justifiable rate. Once we reached and entered the gate, we saw a few horses on the green field. While driving towards the reception, the property seems very well maintained. We were quite impressed.

The entire place gives you a sense or privacy and classy. Its not a place for people who wants to party hard. The rooms were pretty big and well maintained. Its neat and clean with all basic amenities.

Since we arrived late, we went directly to to restaurant and sat by the beach. The places were beautified by flowering plants and very well maintained. Did not swim as surprisingly the air was cold. The warmth of the sun rays coupled with cool breeze was very relaxing.

The sunset at the beach was breath taking, something I can compare with Boracay by in a more private place with many people. The serenity of the environment would calm down your stress and tension level. The resort also arrange for a Turtle show where you can adopt a turtle. We missed it as we were so engrossed in the nature and the sunset.

At night, the weather became pretty cold but sweet. Though missed the bonfire at the beach, we sat for a long time in front of the heated wood. Its so relaxing. We later sat on the beach in a place where its a little dark to enjoy the galaxy of stars in the dark night. Kindly have a shawl or pashmina with you as it might be cold. Luckily saw 3 shooting stars within 30 mins.

Though we stayed overnight only for some prior appointments, its best if you can spend a full day on the beach. They have some basic water sports like jet ski, water scooter, kayaking, etc. Pretty nice. Will definitely visit the property in future if time permits.

Room Tip: Choose the Ocean View Room near the pool, its closer to the beach and the restaurant also

I stayed at Montemar Beach Club for 2 nights (8,9,10 of January) 2014 after taking a drive there a week earlier to check it out. On my brief check it out trip it looked the goods, nice wide sandy beach and although there were quite a few guests, didn't seem crowded, so I booked the stay for my wife and I to have a short beach break without the kids.
OK, the beach is not Boracay but it's pretty close. The grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. The staff super friendly (as you grow accustomed to in the Philippines), the food for breakfast, lunch and dinner was excellent. We stayed in the Premiere Ocean View room which is the closest room to the beach and has magnificent views over the grass area, coconut palms and the ocean.
I have read a lot of reviews on Trip Advisor and it frustrates me that people sometimes don't take in to consideration the money they are paying at a particular place and don't compare apples with apples. Having said that, and bearing in mind I usually stay at 4.5 - 5 star places (Shangri la Boracay, for example) and have stayed many times at resorts in Bali, Fiji, other South Pacific Islands and grew up on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, I can safely say that for the money (we visited in low season remember) this place is right up there. The rooms could benefit from a bit of modernising which could be achieved with some nicer bed coverings and prints on the walls but they are spacious and clean. We virtually had the place to ourselves (only 2 other rooms occupied) and the weather was absolutely perfect, so again, people write comments like "it was crowded" when they are there at peak times, or complain when the weather is bad but stay in the wet season.
One negative is there is no Internet in the rooms and being down in Bagac, the wifi that is there in the reception area is slow.
Being an easy an scenic 1.5 hour drive from where we live in Pampanga, we will be using Montemar as our day trip or weekend beach escape from now on. Forget anything in Subic, Morong or Olongapo, there is nothing there that gives you a tropical island beach experience like Montemar.
Thank you for a near perfect stay, we will be back!

After seven years we decided to return on a whim, and we were so pleasantly surprised!

Better everything! Rooms, food even the crowd :)

Even the new areas impressed.

Service was impeccable with living legend Jay (circa 1979) leading the way.

1. Horrible food (and very expensive) - scrambled egg - soaked in cooking oil, longganisa taste like crap, fried rice cooked like puto (rice cakes), bulalo for P450+ has one (1) slice of beef. sinigang P350+ has three slices of pork.
2.Rooms are old and dirty - when we arrived the rooms were covered in dust and sand.
3. Sheets and pillows - were old, over used and smells like its been stored in a cabinet for a verry very long time.
4. Front office staffs are stupid, promise ang tatanga ng mga kausap ko sa front desk.
5. Floor squeaks and roof looks like its going to fall.

We arrived Friday, June 21 on a rainy afternoon. First reaction was wow, place looks really spacious and green everywhere. But that's all the "wow" in it. Reception is small, and the only place that have Wi-Fi, and a sofa good for at least 2-3 petite people. Confirmed our reservation and got our keys then we're off to our rooms (we had 2 separate deluxe rooms as we are 5 in the family, with 2 teenage girls who likes to be on their own). We were on the first floor with the garden view. I might say I am quite impressed with the room size and the view from the terrace. But when I checked on the amenities, saw that some of their furniture's are already a little worn out, also the fixtures in the bathroom, TV have limited channels and signal is not so good. I mean its P4,550/night, it may not be a lot to some people, but for us it is, we expect a little bit better than this. Worst part came when it was time to sleep, since we are on the first floor, we can hear the footsteps of the people on the room above us. It was really annoying, it was our 1st night, we are tired and would like to have a quiet night; around 10:30pm when they start dragging I think some chairs, without even thinking that there could be other guests downstairs. I complained about it the next morning and was happy that the staff spoke to them, so it was okay already on our 2nd night, still noisy from time to time but not as bad as it was on our 1st night. Here are my notes while we were on our 3d 2n stay in Montemar.

-Staffs are very attentive, always greeting us with a smile and asking if we need anything.
-Pool itself is clean and well maintained but the chairs around are dirty and no one even bothers to clean it.
-Food is okay, but could be better, also the portions are quite small and the price is I think on a higher side, one not-so-jumbo hotdog costs P85 etc.
-NO Wi-Fi on the rooms!!! Please work on this one!
-Rooms are clean and spacious, there's also a vault for some valuables and ref was stacked with drinks.
-I love that the place is surrounded with big trees, gives you the feeling of being really one with nature.

Overall it was good/okay for me, but there's still room for a lot of improvements. Also, one more thing, they should not offer recreation unless they can live up to it. They offer fishing, yet fish pond is drained, they offer tennis, and yet court is muddy and slippery etc. I can understand that it was raining almost the whole week, but they can also put that as a *note* on their flyers.

Room Tip: Request for 2nd floor if there's available room/s, cause if you're at the 1st floor, people...
