“The best place to stay on Kawau Island - Kawau Lodge”
Reviewed January 21, 2012

What a very special place Kawau Lodge is. We stayed for three nights, and we left relaxed and refreshed. Helen and Dave are the host and hostess with the mostest. Helens cooking is fabulous and Dave is at hand with a wine or beer. They both have excellent local knowledge of the island. We had fun exploring the walks, visiting Mansion House and even managed to get some lovely fresh scallops.

Helens and Daves family were up from Christchurch for Xmas having a well deserved break from the shaky city. It was great to meet them, and they made us feel like part of the family.

Highly recommend!!

Room Tip: Make sure you try breakfast from the deck outside your room - stunning view

Lovely location with plenty of places to walk & explore but we were not prepared for the noise of the hosts grandkids also staying. If you are planning a tranquil 2 day stay as we were, I would suggest checking ahead that kids won't be staying. Other than this we had a great time. Helen & Dave are very welcoming, waking up to the views of the cove was divine & we enjoyed Helen's meals. Great local wines available - nice to find a place promoting local produce.

Hi DeBorah, thank you for the nice review and we understand your comment, we normally do not have children in the house when we have other guests staying but with all the drama that had happened down in Christchurch we decided to bring them up for a few days and unfortunately it was very hard to keep two little boys quiet all the time, sincere apologies.

From the moment we stepped aboard Dave's boat we felt relaxed and at home. Unfortunately we had only one night with Dave and Helen but Helen produced a wonderful dinner and an equally superb breakfast. Both were great hosts and we left feeling we could have stayed and enjoyed their hospitality for a lot longer. A very comfortable room with a lovely view over the bay, beautiful meals, congenial hosts - what more do you need for a relaxing, enjoyable get-away. Liz and Peter

We wanted to have a unique experience and visit with friends on this great little island in New Zealand. It was our great luck that Helen and Dave have a wonderful little B&B situated just across the bay from our friends and we could borrow the dinghy and zip over whenever we wanted.
Our room was delightful with a view of the bay and all of its waterfowl and human activity (though enough removed that it did not intrude on our peace). We joined Helen and Dave and the guests from the other room for happy hour and then dinner (and we arranged for our friends to come for dinner too.). We could request breakfast to be delivered to our room if we liked... very decandent!
Dave was a fountain of knowledge of the area and was very willing to take guests fishing or a boat tour of the island or a trip around the island to visit Governor Gray's historical mansion (complete with packed picnic lunch that Helen provides). Helen's cooking was superb and we were constantly asking for more!
We were able to take a couple of good hikes to explore the island and with the map that Helen provided we easily found our way through the paths (respectful of other owners' property on the island, of course).
Plan to spend 3 days here to really wind down...

Room Tip: Both rooms had a water view and were equally delightful.

Thanks Dave and Helen, you looked after us so well. Helen's cooking is amazing, she should be on the television! Lots of great island history from Dave on the boat tour of the island - not to be missed.

An excellent get away from it place wonderfully hosted by Dave and Helen. The atmosphere was perfect. Dave's local knowledge for fishing spots was great. The fishing charter really made Priscilla's day, her first fish and admirably smoked by Dave. The other fish (a snapper) was beautifully cooked by Helen just the way Priscilla wanted it was very special.

Room Tip: Book early we missed on the best room but thy were all good.

We spent 3 wonderful days at Kawau Lodge in October 2011. Our hosts, Helen and Dave were delightful, helpful, and very hospitable. Helen is a marvelous chef, creating meals that kept us coming back for more. Dave ferried us around in his boat as we explored this tropical island. We were served before-dinner appetizers and had supper with our hosts, allowing for lots of time to visit with them and learn about their lives, Kawau Island, and New Zealand in general. Our guest room, one of three, was well appointed with a very comfortable bed, full ensuite washroom facilities, in-room tea and coffee available, a private entrance, a view of the north cove, and a deck equipped with table and chairs to relax and enjoy the views. As birders, we enjoyed the antics of the many birds attracted to their gardens, including Weka and Morepork. A wonderful trail system runs from their lodge, up along the ridge, and eventually down to Vivian Beach, giving us a day of hiking, birding, and picnicing. I strongly recommend Kawau Lodge for anyone travelling to or within New Zealand. It was the perfect way to start our travels and I look forward to returning for another stay the next time we visit New Zealand.
