“Great Holiday”
Reviewed August 1, 2012

We have just returned from a 9 night stay in La Orquidea. This was our first time in these apartments although we have stayed in the Calahonda area on numerous occassions. The apartments were spotless and well decorated with great facilites however the beds could do with bieng updated and the apartments would benefit from air conditioning as it can get quite hot and stuffy at night time. The pools were great in particular the water slide which my kids couldnt get enough of. It was quite quiet which suited us yet busy enough for the kids to make friends, everyone at the snack bar was very friendly and the staff were great. Flavio the receptionist was great and very helpful. Overall a super holiday and we will definately be returning next year.

We have just returned home from another fantastic fortnight at La Orquidea. The apartments are a bit dated and would benfit from the addition of air conditioning but a great time was had by all. The people are what make this holiday special and what keep us coming back. Bar Staff very friendly and helpful. Les, the bar proprietor in particular could not do enough for us. He sought our opinion on several new products which he was considering introducing. We found this exceptional as Les clearly has customer satisfaction as a high priority. Les has great sense of humour which we deemed appropriate for all generations. Please do not be put off by other negative comments regards the bar staff as this is not how we or our friends have found them.
Thank you all at La Orquidea for making our holiday.

We stayed at the La Orquidea from 30 June to 14 July in a penthouse.

Last year we visited this resort and we were so impressed that we booked again. But please read on -

The Pluses

The La Orquidea penthouse apartments are well equipped with a dishwasher, washing machine, numerous kitchen utensils, and ceiling fans. On arrival the apartment was spotlessly clean with plenty of towels. There was a midweek change of towels and if you were staying longer than one week a further clean was offered as part of the package.

The swimming pool and surrounding grounds was cleaned everyday. Although the pool is relatively small there is a separate pool with a water slide. This kept my three young boys entertained all the time.

Ian who works in the office is a very approachable person who was always willing to help out with any problems/requests.

The Minuses

There is no air conditioning in the apartments. Even though there were ceiling fans it was still very uncomfortable due to the heat.

There were five of us staying in the apartment but the outside table and chairs would only seat 4 people. We did ask for a replacement, twice, but this never happened. Dogs barking at the rear of the apartments were a nuisance as they were quiet during the day and “woke up” during the evening.

Our washing machine broke down on the Saturday of our stay but it took to Wednesday for the machine to be repaired. We were lucky as my parents were renting the apartment next door and we could use the machine in their apartment.

Some parts of the apartment are beginning to look a bit tired. There are broken floor tiles by the patio doors; the sink in the kitchen is not fixed. The suite in the lounge is starting to show its age.

Biggest Complaint

Our biggest complaint was with the Club House of the La Orquidea and the unreasonable behaviour of Les, the Bar Proprietor.

Following rude and untrue comments made to my mother in respect of alleged non-payment for drinks, my father approached the Les to ask for an explanation. Les was very rude and commenced shouting and gesticulating in front of people present, subsequently ordering my father to leave the bar and physically pushing him out of the door. My three children witnessed the action of the Les and were seriously distressed by what they had seen happen to their grandfather. My father is 76 years. The attitude of Les was most aggressive, loutish and unnecessary.

Another concern is the lack of regard Les has for adults and children in residency. On one night the noise did not stop until 0230. A group of about 20 people, encouraged by Les, proceeded to sing, clap, and play various instruments accompanied by loud shouting and “singing”.

Even after a call was made to Emergency Reception, Les ignored the request to comply with the Resort rules which state that Bar noise between the hours of 2300 and 0930 should not occur.

Bar charges are extremely high for drinks (2.50 euros for a small draught beer).

Also be aware – you will encounter lots of swearing and crude behaviour by an unwashed Les.

My recommendation would be to visit the local supermarket/Lidl and stock up on drinks and snacks for the poolside – then avoid the bar at all times.

Even though I would like to make another return trip in 2013 I will not return to La Orquidea until Les has been removed from the Club Bar.

Room Tip: The Penthouse suites are the best rooms - but do not forget there are no lifts at the resort, there...

This Resort is excellent. The facilities are first class, the accommodation
excellent, the Leaseholder of the Bar is obnoxious. If you are considering
this Resort do not book if "Les" is still in charge.

Room Tip: Room No 11 is well recommended. As are Rooms 44A and 43 A.

La Orquidea –
We first stayed in the “Little Gem”, a 1 bedroom apartment opening out to the garden. We enjoyed the ripe Kumquats and Avacados! Then, since we liked the place AND the price, we moved up to a 2nd floor two-bedroom apartment which looked down the hill to the Mediterranean. It was perfect for us since our agenda was rest, sight-seeing in the area, and working on a writing project.

Ian, Jeanette, and Flavio were more than helpful both in solving problems, and in providing information about the area, calling for information, and booking a tour for us. (Thanks, Ian, for extra help when we arrived.)

The apartment was clean (with complementary weekly cleaning) and in quite good repair. They are constantly renovating, but carefully so as not to provide much disturbance to their guests. The grounds were clean and maintained, although they need someone with time and the skill to put in some new plants, especially along the walkways.

Since we had rented a car, the hill was not a problem. We walked it several times, although near the end of our time that became less pleasant as the weather warmed up. We drove to then walked along many beaches, enjoyed Mijas’ historical sites and especially the flowers on the balconies. We went to Ronda twice, the second time also going to the Pileta Cave. We day-tripped to Alhambra in Granada, to Gibraltar (go see St Michael’s Cave!), to the cave at Nerja (also amazing!), and to the beautiful little villages built steeply up the hillsides.
We recommend La Orquidea to people looking for a reasonably-priced, friendly location away from the big Tourist concentrations.

Following a bitter-sweet arrival in Calahonda, having to leave my husband and youngest daughter at home awaiting the late arrival of a passport, my eldest daughter and I went ahead on the holiday to La Orquidea in Calahonda. We arrived late following an evening flight into Malaga and were surprised and relieved to find that even at that hour, there was someone available to see us settled into our apartment. Being May, we were pleasantly surprised by how hot and sunny it was too - one day of rain which was quickly followed by sunshine for the rest of our stay, just perfect!

My daughter and I stayed in apartment 7a, a one bedroom, fully equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The apartment was immaculate, the view down over Calahonda towards the ocean was lovely and the gardens and swimming pools were very well maintained. The staff even fitted baby gates for us the day before we arrived, this was something they did of their own accord but a much appreciated little extra. The chap on reception was extremely helpful, always friendly and ensured we have everything we needed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The onsite restaurant and bar meant that a meal and a drink were was available if we didn't feel like staying in or travelling out to eat. Calahond is situated within what I believe to be the best location between Malaga and Marbella. The village is pristine, the streets and surroundings are very well taken care of and having driven most of the local costline, I would not stay anywhere else.

The newly opened Selwo Safari Park is well worth a trip, kept my 2 year old entertained for a full day, as did Sealife in Benalmadena along with the many bustling beaches and ports within easy drivnig distance of the village. I would recommend lunch at "Okie Dokies" in Benalmadena located within the port complex, very tasty and good value! We went self-catered for the most part and there are two large, local supermarkets with everything you could possibly need and more and at a far lower cost than the UK. We had one of the best European holidays we've ever had and we really do look forward to going back this summer with any luck.

Room Tip: When booking, I would suggest asking to stay in the front buildings as we did, wonderful views and l...

A holiday begins at home: make up your mind, find fine places, compare prices, read reviews. And also: see websites, use Google Maps and Streetview or similar programs. Never before one could be so well informed on holiday destinations as nowadays.
So the steep hill was not a surprise, nor were the nice views and the degree of service rendered.
We stayed a bit more than five weeks at La Orquidea, in April and May 2012, and we had a magnificent time there. Being rather self-supporting we didn't dine out that much and the apartments kitchen was well equiped; everything was there.
The beds could have used an extension. The tallest of us measures almost 1.95M and the beds didn't. Nevertheless we enjoyed the nights as well.
Being situated up hill means that the AP7 is almost in the backyard of La Orquidea. No noice produced whatsoever, as the AP7 is tunnelled there.
La Orquidea is a very pleasant place to stay. We must draw your attention to this lovely resort at Sitio de Calahonda.
