“Just right for us!”

La Orquidea –
We first stayed in the “Little Gem”, a 1 bedroom apartment opening out to the garden. We enjoyed the ripe Kumquats and Avacados! Then, since we liked the place AND the price, we moved up to a 2nd floor two-bedroom apartment which looked down the hill to the Mediterranean. It was perfect for us since our agenda was rest, sight-seeing in the area, and working on a writing project.

Ian, Jeanette, and Flavio were more than helpful both in solving problems, and in providing information about the area, calling for information, and booking a tour for us. (Thanks, Ian, for extra help when we arrived.)

The apartment was clean (with complementary weekly cleaning) and in quite good repair. They are constantly renovating, but carefully so as not to provide much disturbance to their guests. The grounds were clean and maintained, although they need someone with time and the skill to put in some new plants, especially along the walkways.

Since we had rented a car, the hill was not a problem. We walked it several times, although near the end of our time that became less pleasant as the weather warmed up. We drove to then walked along many beaches, enjoyed Mijas’ historical sites and especially the flowers on the balconies. We went to Ronda twice, the second time also going to the Pileta Cave. We day-tripped to Alhambra in Granada, to Gibraltar (go see St Michael’s Cave!), to the cave at Nerja (also amazing!), and to the beautiful little villages built steeply up the hillsides.
We recommend La Orquidea to people looking for a reasonably-priced, friendly location away from the big Tourist concentrations.

Following a bitter-sweet arrival in Calahonda, having to leave my husband and youngest daughter at home awaiting the late arrival of a passport, my eldest daughter and I went ahead on the holiday to La Orquidea in Calahonda. We arrived late following an evening flight into Malaga and were surprised and relieved to find that even at that hour, there was someone available to see us settled into our apartment. Being May, we were pleasantly surprised by how hot and sunny it was too - one day of rain which was quickly followed by sunshine for the rest of our stay, just perfect!

My daughter and I stayed in apartment 7a, a one bedroom, fully equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The apartment was immaculate, the view down over Calahonda towards the ocean was lovely and the gardens and swimming pools were very well maintained. The staff even fitted baby gates for us the day before we arrived, this was something they did of their own accord but a much appreciated little extra. The chap on reception was extremely helpful, always friendly and ensured we have everything we needed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The onsite restaurant and bar meant that a meal and a drink were was available if we didn't feel like staying in or travelling out to eat. Calahond is situated within what I believe to be the best location between Malaga and Marbella. The village is pristine, the streets and surroundings are very well taken care of and having driven most of the local costline, I would not stay anywhere else.

The newly opened Selwo Safari Park is well worth a trip, kept my 2 year old entertained for a full day, as did Sealife in Benalmadena along with the many bustling beaches and ports within easy drivnig distance of the village. I would recommend lunch at "Okie Dokies" in Benalmadena located within the port complex, very tasty and good value! We went self-catered for the most part and there are two large, local supermarkets with everything you could possibly need and more and at a far lower cost than the UK. We had one of the best European holidays we've ever had and we really do look forward to going back this summer with any luck.

Room Tip: When booking, I would suggest asking to stay in the front buildings as we did, wonderful views and l...

A holiday begins at home: make up your mind, find fine places, compare prices, read reviews. And also: see websites, use Google Maps and Streetview or similar programs. Never before one could be so well informed on holiday destinations as nowadays.
So the steep hill was not a surprise, nor were the nice views and the degree of service rendered.
We stayed a bit more than five weeks at La Orquidea, in April and May 2012, and we had a magnificent time there. Being rather self-supporting we didn't dine out that much and the apartments kitchen was well equiped; everything was there.
The beds could have used an extension. The tallest of us measures almost 1.95M and the beds didn't. Nevertheless we enjoyed the nights as well.
Being situated up hill means that the AP7 is almost in the backyard of La Orquidea. No noice produced whatsoever, as the AP7 is tunnelled there.
La Orquidea is a very pleasant place to stay. We must draw your attention to this lovely resort at Sitio de Calahonda.

A lovely complex with clean apartments, 5 swimming pools and a super water slide. THE COMPLEX IS UP THE HILL BUT THE WALK DOWN INTO THE SHOPS IS FINE. The balcony was great and we liked the sunbeds around the pools. There were shaded areas to sit too. The best thing we found about this apartment was the value.

Room Tip: Apartment 47 has great views of all the pools.

So far this year – 2012. I’ve had two breaks at La Orquidea. My first visit was in a Penthouse unit and the second time in one of the more basic units.

Before booking, I extensively reviewed what was on offer in the local area, and I have to say that I was motivated by some keen ‘winter’ pricing by La Orquidea.

I enjoyed my stays so much, that I’m planning to go back before the end of April for my third visit this year!

I found these units very clean and well equipped to handle my stay. I had every convenience expected, and enjoyed a very comfortable and stress free experience. The staff in the office are both friendly and efficient. Absolutely no complaints from me! Some of the top floors have some awesome views and sunsets. You will probably need a car to fully enjoy what the local area has to offer. I was doing some writing, so I was able to enjoy the area during the day and undertake my writing late afternoon and evening. Taking advantage of the total peace and quiet. The area seems quite safe with a high degree of security within the units.

Room Tip: Good views from the top floors!

We wanted a quiet and slightly distant location for our holiday. Our family, with a 10 month child, had a great time at the resort. We did get the quiet and peace we wanted, with sights clos by car. Had some fine dining in the local restaurants, but also good cooking in our own kitchen :)
We arrived on a bank holiday, but had all well prepared, no problems arose. After our trip we found that som of our items where left behind. All was located and Flavio did more than one could ask for getting the stuff back to us by post

Thank yu for a great stay, and fine service!

We booked for one week with us -( our Grand-daughter and her friend )- Through Worldwide Exchange Club. Pictures looked great - That was the best bit.
The apartment was faded - grubby - The kitchen units were in a bad state of repair, the 'air conditioning' was a free standing circular fan which didn't even stand straight. There was no maid service at all... Not even a change of bed linen...The towels supplied were to do 4 people all week without one change.. We had to bag up our rubbish and carry it ourselves to the outside of the resort, and walk about 100 metres down to a lay-by in the road to get rid of it. We have never been in a 'resort' where you were given 2 rolls of toilet paper and if you needed more you had to buy it yourselves... Which obviously we had to do. when you leave you have to bag up your bed linen yourselves and leave it out for the cleaners.
There was we were told a 'courtesy bus which would take us down the very long walk to the nearest place with shops - pubs and beaches...It was however broken down and it seemed no-one even knew where it was and if it would ever be repaired.
A taxi journey cost about 12 euros for a return trip from the resort to amenities.
If you don't walk too good be prepared to stay in....it's not a gentle stroll up and down.
The pool cleaner only cleaned the 'big bits' of stuff floating in the pools.
We were told there was 4 or 5 pools....2 in the main part were open..the other open one was out to the main road and uphill about 200 metres...
Wi-Fi was available but only at a price.
The Good Things.....
The reception staff were very pleasant - the bar was run by a great couple - who tried their very best to give good service - and they did.... Good food and a bit of entertainment.... They made us very welcome.
We had car trouble and had to (unfortunately) stay for an extra 3 nights, and the reception were very good handling that.
That's the good bits....
When we asked for the extra 3 nights we were told we would have to move to another apartment,so we did as we were told and bagged up the bed linen, however they then told us to go back to the same apartment...And it was hours later they - after us complaining - eventually put clean linen in the apartment.
The overall impression of the site is that may have been nice once upon a time - but alas the fairytale ended years ago. We would not reccomend this resort to anyone we know or don't know!
