“Feeling the heartbeat of Canada´s Wild”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2014

Who normally has the opportunity to enjoy an awesome and breathtaking wild nature in a self-built wooden kayak, enjoying a beautiful sunset view over the Pacific Ocean, while sitting at a bonfire watching otters feeding, and hearing a bear, while having a delicious dinner with salmon, vegetable curry and a glass of red wine?

Well, this and much more is possible with Dave!

A trip with "One Tree Paddles" let you forget everything what ruled your days so far, at the latest when the incredibly beautiful and absolutely easy to handle wooden kayak departs and slides through the water- almost silently and easily. And Dave really took care of everything - perfectly organized and prepared, he knew how to give us "greenhorns" peace and self-assurance, so that we were looking forward to the next day like little kids.

The first touch of the kayaks-wow! When we were sliding through the morning mist and the mountains slowly appeared and we finally got a clear view of the route in front of us - everything was forgotten. Mobile? What is that? Nature - here we come! We were captured, moved and enchanted-also by the deafening silence.

Dave in the kayak next to us always had some exciting, interesting and funny information and stories about animals, the country, the people and life now and then in and around Tahsis.

More than a month later we still go into raptures and everyone who wants to experience something like this, to be an Indian or to try something new on the safe side will have the perfect pro in Dave of "One Tree Paddles" and the perfect location in Tahsis. There cannot be more!

If you are toying with the idea now - just send an email to Dave. Maybe you will also hear the bear while having a glass of red wine…….

“Brilliant one kayak day trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2013

We just did a one-day trip so can only be jealous of the longer trips described here. I won't repeat all the good words from the other five star reports here - they are all true: it's a superb wilderness experience but very professionally run. We had done next to no kayaking before but with Dave as our guide we were soon right out in the middle of nowhere all having the most marvellous time. Great food too.

So I can recommend it for shorter trips too. I would just love to do one of those longer ones sometime, and I can imagine no-one better than Dave to do it with.

“Absolutely amazing!”

One of the best experiences of my entire life! So much to see and so many good stories from the area. A total gem in Canadian history and exploration. Don't live your life with out going there and touring with one tree paddles. You would never forgive yourself! Will definitely go back time and time again! Love!

“Memorable and inspiring”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2012

More than three months after the trip, we still remember every detail of it. The impressive view along Tahsis inlet when starting the tour, the beautiful wooden kayaks gliding through the water, the rugged steep hillsides, the starfish, seals, sealions, eagles and humpback whales, the unique atmosphere of paddling through the morning mist and the magical feeling when it cleared off and the sun came through, the waterfall, the sunset, the stars at night. If the idea of vacation is to get away from the everyday life and explore new places, then this trip was at the very heart of the idea. We learned interesting things about the past and present of the region and its people, we enjoyed a great, fresh and healthy selection of food, we had fabulous views, and we felt inspired. As the unexpected highlight, a young humpback whale suddenly appeared when we entered Tahsis inlet on our way back, and decided to surface once more very close to our kayaks. We held our breath at the sound of the blow, and realized that what we saw was actually only a small fraction of the animal. But even without this surprising encounter, there is not even the slightest doubt that the tour was worth the money. The organisation and guidance was very professional, and also left sufficient flexibility to adapt to our pace and our wishes. For example, when we arrived back to Tahsis but still felt in good shape, we did a little paddling detour into the Leiner River estuary, which gave a very nice contrast in terms of scenery and served as a perfect ending. Once we return to Vancouver Island, we definitely want to do another tour with One Tree Paddles.

Always a pleasure Thorsten & Rosina! I am really happy to have lived up to your expectations. It was a bit unnerving knowing your travel schedule as you had us amongst some of the best operations on our coast. These words mean so much given all the circumstance and past history! Cheers Dave

“Trip of a Lifetime.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012

My Girlfriend and I spent two weeks vacation on Vancouver Island, including backpacking 6 days on the North Coast Trail and Cape Scott Trail. We had a great trip, full of wonderful experiences and yet, when people ask us about our trip, we talk a bit about the hike [which was fantastic] and the scenery [which was beautiful], and then rave about the two days we spent with Dave and Traci of One Tree Paddles.

We really can't say enough about our experience – we had perfect weather, beautiful scenery, lot and LOTS of animals [more on this later]. What really impressed us were the guides: these two had it down to an art.

First off, the boats: Dave builds all his own boats and paddles – these are beautiful to behold and even more fun to paddle. The boats are smooth, stable, and we quickly became very comfortable in them. Dave uses a greenland style paddle, which takes a bit of getting used to but is soon more comfortable and efficient than any standard paddle I've used. Dave takes great pride in these boats and it really shows.

It might have been the setting, but I believe that Dave makes the finest cup of coffee in the world [Coffee was ready when we rolled out of the tent, and we went down to the shore to watch Sea Lions while Dave and Traci prepared pancakes with freshly picked huckleberries. It's a tough life.] All the meals were excellent and we were amazed at what these two could whip up, seemingly out of no-where. The local fish was excellent and superbly prepared.

The paddling was incredible – Dave's knowledge of the area, the animals, and timing of the tides was immediately apparent – he put us in the perfect spot at the perfect time with ease. We saw herds of sea lions [so close you could hear them barking under the water with the sound reverberating in the boats], and humpback whales so close our pictures can't begin to do it justice. We gave up and put the cameras away just to take in the experience. We spent literally hours quietly watching these guys from the boats and even the shore [they were that close]. I should also mention that at all times Dave was conscious and respectful of the whales, ensuring we didn't make them uncomfortable or interrupt their feeding or breathing cycles – I was really impressed by this and I'm sure his consideration and knowledge was one of the reasons we got to have such an intimate and prolonged encounter with these awesome creatures.

They are great hosts – all kinds of fun and great stories around the campfire, yet they approach guiding with a level of quiet professionalism that you only find with people that are incredibly experienced and incredibly passionate about what they do.

We cannot say enough good things about Dave and Traci at One Tree Paddles - Those two days were really special – a trip of a lifetime kind of experience. A lot was luck, with great weather and good timing, but it would have been impossible without Dave and Traci sharing this part of the world with us.
