We visited Upper Gilwern Quarry for the first time in October 2017 as birthday treat for my husband sho is fossil mad!
The Shepherds hut was beautifully and ingeniously designed to make the most of the space, and despite storm Brian we had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay.
We arrived in the dark and had no idea of our surroundings until the next morning and the sun came up.
The views were spectacular and the fossil hunting was fruitful.
We will be returning in the summer this time to make the most of the hammock and fire pit (fingers crossed!)
Tucked away on a remote Welsh hillside is this modern Sheppard's hut.
Compact and bijou, no neighbours in sight apart from sheep and soaring red kites, it has all you need for escaping the 21st century rat race.
Underfloor heating will keep you cosy on the coldest day, and a large window door opens to enjoy the views when the sun comes out.
If you don't feel like cooking, there is a warm welcome for you in the local hundred house pub.
Right next door is one of the best places for finding some of the most ancient fossils anywhere in the UK, and residents have exclusive access to this facility. There are also plenty of farm tracks for decent walks.
Peace, tranquility and amazing views, the Sheppard's hut has it all.
Just spent a very pleasant stay. Warmly welcomed by Emma who had the heating on, tea and welsh tea cakes at the ready. The hut has everything you could ask for , cosy and comfortable. Close to the quarry for fossil hunting to keep hubby occupied while I got to enjoy peace and quiet. Lots of lambs and red kites to see, didnt get much of my book read. Definetily on list for a return visit.
We’re amateur fossil hunters always on the lookout for rich fossiling locations. This is the jackpot! Even in December, our little family found excellent trilobite specimens to take home. (The shepherd’s hut was a clean, cozy, and warm home away from home.) We traveled from Florida to hunt fossils here, and we’re very pleased with the experience!
Lovely, cosy little hut in a stunningly beautiful part of Wales. Situated right next to one of the best areas for fossil hunting in this part of the country. If outstanding countryside, peace and quiet, lovely walks, bird watching and looking for fossils is your thing, then this is the place to be.
Having just spent a few days at the quarry hut we are already thinking of another visit! For those who like peace & quiet in the countryside this is a little piece of heaven! Plenty of wildlife, we saw red kites, buzzards, kestrels even an owl, not to mention lots of friendly sheep!
Fossil hunting was great fun too for first timers! Although my favourite pastime was just taking in the amazing views for hours on end!
Thanks to Emma for being a great host & very attentive
