We've been having a meal at the Talbot annually for a number of years, and have always enjoyed it - lovely country pub atmosphere and tasty food. But this year things had changed - fortunately for the better. The decor is now elegant rather than pubby, and the food was correspondingly upmarket. Several tempting choices on the fixed price lunch menu, and everything was delicious - and still not overpriced. Looking forward to next year's visit!

We had a lovely relaxed Saturday lunch at the Talbot Inn. The welcome was friendly and after being asked what we'd like to drink we were shown to our table and given menus. The men were pleased to have a choice of real ales to sample!

The layout of the restaurant is cosy without being dark, and divided up into areas that lead off each other so that it isn't one big room. Nice to have tap water already on the table and the staff were great in offering to replenish drinks without having to be asked.

The menu offers about 5 choices of starter (we passed on these in order to make space for desserts), about 4 choices of pub food that included fish and chips, ploughmans, burger and gammon (we saw many of these being brought out to fellow diners and they all looked very tempting), and around 5 or 6 main courses. Three of us chose the baked hake that came with new potatoes, spinach, baked beetroots and cauliflower purée, absolutely delicious. The other member of our party ordered the lamb, which came thickly sliced, juicy and pink, on chard and crushed new potatoes. Each dish also had some delicious touches of sauces, without them taking over the taste of the main dish.

The dessert menu offered about 4 choices, with cheese of the day as an option. Three of us were tempted by the dark chocolate terrine, rich and sumptuous with salted caramel ice cream, toasted hazelnuts and raspberries. Just amazing! The other dessert ordered was lemon polenta cake with baked peaches - also voted delicious even though it did bear a slight resemblance to a fish cake when it first appeared!

All the way through lunch the staff were friendly and helpful, being as chatty as we wanted them to be, without being over the top. They helped us to understand the menu and certainly helped our enjoyment of the experience.

We would most certainly return to sample more of the menu, or to try the Grill Room.

Stepping through the arch way into the court yard you are welcomed with a view of people sitting down in the sun. After ordering drinks we found a nice table in the sun. The burger was spot on, with extra bacon A** so juicy!! And the chicken sandwich went down like a treat - and the deserts the chocolate terrine with salted ice cream- wow!! Will come again!!

I went as part of a party of 6 in early September. My food was lovely. I had the potted shrimp as a starter, which was very tasty and came with just the right amount of toast. My main was the belly pork which was cooked to perfection, rendering the fat to an unctuous delight. Knickerbocker glory was my choice for dessert and it was beautiful, with a sort of honeycomb on top and lovely bits of chocolate hidden amongst the ice cream. My wife had a burger which she said was nice, but she was disappointed in what she saw as the lack of choice on the menu. She usually has a chicken or salmon dish but there was neither of these on the fairly limited menu. The only criticism we had was that it seemed as though our wine order had been forgotten and one of the members of our party had to remind the waitress that we'd ordered wine after we'd finished our starters. This is a minor quibble though. In my opinion both the food and the location are really good. It was almost a 5 star performance, but not quite.

Third time now in revamped restaurant - really first rate each time. Giving Babington up the road more than a run for its money. Andrew from Frome.
