“Can't speak for B&B but food was wonderful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2013

We visited here one Saturday lunchtime after being recommended by a good friend of ours. It was our first Mezze experience and have to say we were a bit apprehensive as although our kids will eat almost anything, my husband and I are about as fussy as you can get.

The menu is huge - even if you don't want the tapas there was a lunch menu, and a Xmas special menu aswell. So much choice. Anyway I insisted my husband and I do tapas and we ordered 3 each for £12 each. We both like very different foods. I had garlic king prawns, whitebait and hoisin duck something or other. My husband had more meaty choices - chicken casserole and beef stew etc. The kids had sesame chicken and a burger.

I always slate restaurants that give the kids 'cheap, crap food' and I was not disappointed with their meals here. Proper chicken pieces and proper beef burger and delicious chips were served to them - delicious. Our meals were great too. Don't think my husband would have tapas choice again as he likes to have potatoes or veg with the choices he had but didn't realise until they were in front of him. And for £12 each it wasn't a cheap choice so we wouldn't have wanted to add chips or veg on top.

All in all, a lovely atmosphere and lovely food. Pricy for lunchtime with the family but we would definitely consider returning and there are lots of other food choices to try.

OK, we visited on a Saturday lunchtime after Christmas when staffing is difficult, but this was not good. Drinks took nearly 15 minutes to arrive after ordering - it would have been much quicker to have queued at the bar. I had decided to go for a veggie option, the Morroccan spiced squash tart. Unfortunately, the description was somewhat deceptive. What was served was a flavourless quiche with butternut squash which had been microwaved to death so the pastry was very soggy. Pretty tasteless and not particularly pleasant. The fries were good though. My partner had the fishcakes which were good, but the accompanying chilli sauce was unusual/strange.
The Ship and Castle is apparently an AA 4 star Inn but I don't think that it justifies this rating. A group of locals were clearly enjoying themselves, but language was pretty appalling, and access to toilets was to pass through this group. We are regular pub-goers and are not often intimidated by this sort of behaviour. The final straw was to find that none of the ladies toilet cubicles had lockable doors - not what you would expect of any 4 star establishment.
I am afraid that Ship and Castle needs to decide whether it is a pub or a restaurant, because at the moment it does neither well. Standards are certainly nowhere nearly as good as the Mezze at Temple Cloud where we ate only a couple of months ago.

Awful experience for my family. Food was no better than a cheap restaurant. We would of been disappointed if we had payed £6.95 for a poor carvery but we payed £55. The starters were very poor, the main course was served in a pasta bowl and the veg was jusr sprouts and carrots. Dessert was another joke, jaffa cake tart was yoghurt with a whole jaffa cake biscuit stuck in the top and the gingerbread pudding was over done. The waiting staff did not serve correctly from behind as you would be served in a good restaurant. The table was not set out as you would expect for a Christmas lunch. The staff were removing plates before the table were all finished. Before we were finished the staff were spraying cleaning fluid about on the table next to us while we were still eating. We had a 3 month old baby with us and we had asked to have the table set out a certain way to get the pram in when we booked in the summer, which we were told and confirmed by email that this was not a problem. When we got there on the day the table was not as promised. To make it worse we were left to sort the table ourselves.
We have spoken to the manager stroke owner and who has said that they will speak too the head chef but no refund or anything. We have emailed an official complaint off but that has not been answered.
Anybody who wishes to venture here good luck and go expecting a rubbish meal and experience and you will avoid disappointment. Save your money and go for a cheap 241 meal in a regular bar or even a McDonalds is better.
All we can say is think of as many words of disappointment as you can and this sums the place up in a nutshell!

This was our 5th visit. Food is always good, great for sharing. Service is excellent, easy to get a waiter when you need on but they are also happy to leave you alone if you just want to enjoy drinks after your meal. Vegetarian mezze are plentiful and delicious.

We visited this restaurant on our way to Cadbury and well, it was absolutely delicious. I ordered the Monkfish and king prawn dish and it was to die for. We also ordered sandwiches and wraps and the fillings were not only tasty, but very generous. We would definately recommend this little cracker of an eating house......
