“Plentiful tapas”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

We ordered the 3 tapas for £12 and everything was delicious, especially the beef in wine and the shark - yes, shark! Nice bottle of Vouvray, reasonable price. Service friendly and they accommodated our large group (10) with no problem. Would book again for a family catch up.

Some friends convinced us to give this place a try after they had an enjoyable meal there previously, I have to say that Mezze @ the Ship and Castle was something of a revelation! Having enjoyed the concept of mezzes while on holiday on some Greek islands many years ago I had always ended up disapointed by the offerings found in the Greek resataurants here in the UK. This place is different, the menu is more mediteranean than outright Greek with a nod towards Tappas thrown in, but the food really is great. Well prepared, hot (even Greek island tavernas usually serve tepid food but one learns to accept that in the climate over there!), truly delicious and washed down with Aspalls cider....a real treat.

To all concerned,
Mezze at the Ship and Castle didn’t open until may 2012 and is gaining amazing feedback and acclaimed reviews across the board, please ignore unfortunate review below by Harriet e not posted until some 6 months after her bad experience with the previous pub (this must have been seriously bothering her to wait this long with still such a vivid recollection of events.
To all new customers, we can’t wait to welcome you to Mezze at the Ship and Castle please see the other Mezze at the Ship and Castle trip adviser page for a picture of how great most of our customer reviews really are.

We booked an offer for the ship and castle through deal cloud where we paid £69 and were entitled to a one-night stay with 4-course dinner and continental breakfast. The booking was made to celebrate our 5 year anniversary, so as i am sure you can understand, we expected and hoped for a memorable trip. Having looked on the website for the hotel we thought it looked lovely and the food on the online menu looked very nice indeed.

When I called the hotel to use the voucher I was told we would be able to check in any time from 3pm, so myself and partner decided to take some time off of work in order to arrive on time and make the most of our day there. Upon arrival to the hotel at 3:30 it was closed, all the doors were locked and there was no sign of anybody. There was also another guest waiting who told us she had also been told she could check in at 3. We had no choice but to wait outside until a member of staff finally arrived at 5:45pm. There was no apology when we explained our situation, simply told us they are always closed 3-6. Theres actually a banner outside that states proudly that food is served "all day, every day"... That can hardly be true if its closed now can it.

As part of our deal we had booked a dinner reservation for 7pm. We were taken to the table and provided with a menu completely different to that online. I would imagine this is not only misleading to us and future customers, but undoubtedly illegal too as the deal was booked with a certain menu included. To say the menu is basic is an understatement, and the food that we chose from that menu we were then told would have a surcharge of £5 per course. Considering you could buy a course for £6 this seems ridiculous. Nowhere on our voucher, including the fine print does it state anything about surcharges other than for a hot breakfast. When we enquired about this, it was at this point that the waitress told us that the ship and castle has changed owners and even though we had purchased the deal, they had no responsibility to honour it and that we should be "grateful" that they are.

Whilst we ate our starter, there was an argument from another table of diners regarding the poor quality of food and the terrible customer service. We witnessed the waitress being what can only be described as rude to her customers, which resulted in them walking out. There was no apology made to us for this disruption, considering we were now the only diners remaining.

After 45 minutes our main courses arrived. One of the meals was a beef and bacon burger which we immediately pointed out to the waitress was of a below par standard. We asked if she would eat it and she replied "I just bring out the food" . We changed it for another course which took a further 20 minutes to arrive (the other meal having been put under a hot light for that duration) and again we received no apology.

The desserts were a choice of two options only. Both including ice cream, or a third option of ice cream only. They arrived with melted ice cream which the waitress said hasn't been set properly and they were both generally very bad quality food which we didn't even bother to eat after the first taste. The waitress then asked if we wanted a fourth course which we were told was coffee, as we had coffee in our room what is the point of serving a fourth course of coffee? Everybody on this deal eating at the hotel would also be staying.

After the dinner we contemplated not going for breakfast but thought we would give them the benefit of the doubt, which we later regretted. Breakfast was just as bad as dinner. Breakfast was not refrigerated, there were no spoons for cereal, the orange juice and milk were warm, the cheese and ham slices were stale, the bread was covered in mould. Our main concern about this was that considering breakfast started at7 and we did not go down until 11, these foods had been uncovered and unrefrigerated for over 4 hours. Regardless of the poor quality, this is a health and safety issue which we are raising with the food standards agency.

The general service of the two staff at the premises was bad, we were never greeted or asked how our meals were or our stay and did not receive an apology for a single thing.

As you can imagine, we are absolutely gutted that our anniversary was ruined by this experience. We will be forwarding a copy of this review to deal cloud and to trading standards. We wrote a formal letter of complaint to the hotel on the day we checked out but have received no response which clearly shows they don't care what their customers bad experiences are. I sent the letter singed for delivery so I know at they received it. We wanted a formal apology at the very least but realistically in these circumstances would have expected some form of compensation. I see that the owner looks at these reviews so this should give them a chance to make things right.

Having driven up from Cornwall, I needed a place to stop for just one night close to Clevedon. Trip advisor led me to the Ship and Castle and I'm so glad. This is one of the finest pub rooms I have ever stopped in, being beautifully furnished, well equipped, spacious and comfortable. It had everything you could wish for from ground coffee through to an ironing board. The only downside here is the poor signal strength for the free wi fi. And similar for mobile phone. However this could be connected to the current crazy weather conditions. You can get an early continental breakfast option from 7am, which I took and the food was very nice. The restaurant and bar built into the hotel serve wonderful food too and have a well stocked bar. Will I return if in the area? Without a doubt
